Liverpool FC - Pre-season

Oddly first thing we did when one of my friends was killed in a similar situation when I was younger was head to the park to play football. We felt it was the right thing.

It’s going be really emotional but sometimes even if it’s the very thing you remember doing with them it can be a help.

They had a few days, I don’t know how much they need otherwise… weeks is not possible. I had little doubt this would go ahead. We grieved (and possibly still do, but we’ll have to stick together and go through it), they attended the funeral, had a few days to sort out things and go back home before first tests. That’s it.

I think as a club we have responded to the tragic situation as best as possible. Now the players are back life goes on, as it must. It’s harder at first, but it’s something you live with and try to process as you go. For those colleagues who knew Diogo quite well they will have moments of grief that might last quite a long time.

I’m glad we are back and I’m glad the Preston game is on. It will help with everything.

Family is different, of course. I would imagine Diogo’s wife will still feel numb. The shock will be immense, and it will take her a long time to put the pieces back together and start to look to the future with her children.

The fact that the club has been generous will give her a sense of relief when she starts to think about the future. But as for now, all that can wait. I would imagine her immediate needs are for close friends and family members to make sure she is eating as best she can, sleeping as best she can, and also making sure that the kids are being looked after.

It’s a bit shit, serious grief, but she will find a way.
