Even in the context of pre-season (building fitness, player rotations, different climate, possible bad pitches), certain things absolutely matter, especially at such big football clubs. Slot said it himself after Milan.
We donโt go from being so-so in friendlies and being relaxed like on the beach to being bang on point on matchday 1 just like that. Itโs why pre-season is there and especially modern pre-seasons. We want to get into rhythm. Itโs not only to build fitness, itโs constant working on our football, cohesion, phases of play, partnerships, etc.
Nobody is panicking in saying that weโve seen some positive stuff (Iโd say mostly in combination play between the lines, there seems to be nice fluidity), but also some low level defensive transitioning (which is also linked to losing possession, understandable in pre-season and a lack of better counter-pressing).
Fixing some things takes a bit more time and with less friendlies, we will see less โexperimentsโ and less game time for players that either wonโt be here or wonโt play much. Now itโs time to push and start building the XI (and the cohesion within) we will start the season with.
