Liverpool FC - Pre-season

True but if one of those isn’t involved in a game I’d say he’s currently first in line to be coming off the bench. And there will be some games both Salah and Mane are missing for. I think, at his age and our level, 15+ appearances in the league (even if mostly as a sub), the domestic cups and a few run outs in Europe (hopefully including one or two starts) would be a very successful season in terms of minutes/appearances. And I think he’s good enough that he’ll be appearing more than that towards the end of the season.

Yes he SHOULD be first in line coming off the bench.

Whether that happens and he gets on in front of Origi, Ox and Shaq remains to be seen.

Why wouldn’t he? Works hard on and off the pitch and Klopp seems to really like and rate him as a talent. Klopp has proven before that age isn’t a main consideration for him yet the only reason people seem to be suggesting he won’t play or needs a loan is that he’s young and inexperienced.

You think Elliot has the speed over 5 yards as Mane / Salah? Fucking hell even for you this is beyond parody.

Doesn’t have to be exactly the same but do I think he’s fast enough to play the same role in the same way? Sure. Salah and Mane aren’t identical to each other either. Elliott isn’t slow I’m not sure why that has become the narrative. He frequently plays with his head up using control instead of pace to beat his man and looking for the pass maybe that’s it? But get him into a sprint he’s in the same kind of speed category as Salah and Mane yeah. I’d say Mane has best acceleration and Salah has best athleticism at speed (ie doesn’t need to slow down whilst he’s drinking and jinxing past people whilst dribbling). They’re two of the best dribblers around I think it’d be harsh to expect Elliott to have to match them exactly but he’s quick enough for the job.

You are moving the goalposts… quelle surprise…

My point was simple Elliot could succeed/get chances as a central midfielder sooner rather than a wide forward because he isn’t as quick over 5 yards i.e. acceleration as Mane/Salah. That’s what make them (amongst many other talents) devastating for us.

That’s it, thats the point, nothing else.

Now if you had said Elliot could in time make up for that lack of (v’s a Mane/Salah) with his overall awareness, technical ability and quickness of feet for example… That’s a much better way of discussion. Messi for example isn’t lightening quick in a foot race but what he is is lightening quick with the ball under control.

Actually this is what you originally said, since you’ve moved the goal posts.

Elliott does not have a lack of pace and he is very explosive. Just because he isn’t quite at the level of two of the fastest, most explosive wingers in the world doesn’t mean he doesn’t have pace or explosive speed at all. Also a lot of what Elliott does is calculated, beating people with skill not just hit the ball past them and try to use speed to bear them. When some players are like that it can look like they aren’t particularly quick but that’s because that’s them not at full speed.

Oh goody, that sounds good, honestly I’m looking forward to seeing a bit more of Elliot and hoping it’s this season.
Obviously I will bow to Klopp and his coaching teams decissions however as a fan a good young player is always exciting.

As we’re on the subject I would love to see Salah show greater variety and calculation when he recieves the ball, his obcession of physically challenging his marker I feel stunts what he really could become.

I say Elliot isn’t as quick or explosive as Mane / Salah…

And you say the same… Yet are still disagreeing with me…

I’m out…

Time to get rid of these lactate level exercises in preseason and go for knock out sprint heats just to see who’s faster than who. Would Elliot make the 60 meter sprint final alongside Salah and Mane?
Come on Klopp we need to know!

You understand the term “no pace” is for people with no pace right? Not fast players who aren’t quite as fast as the fastest players around? Similarly saying someone doesn’t have “explosive speed, their ability to go from zero to full pelt in seconds typically beats most defenders” isn’t saying they aren’t as good at it as some of the best in the game its saying its an element missing from their game. I’ve never seen Elliott in a flat out sprint race vs Salah or Mane so I don’t know who would be quickest, my guess would be Mane, then Salah and then Elliott bur with really not much in it between the three. I’ve explained several times how I think this idea that Elliott isn’t quick comes about. Think we need to leave it there. Pretty sure I’m not the only one that’s pointed out Elliott has pace though before. Sure I’ve seen @Sweeting arguing against the no pace opinion before too.

I won’t be surprised if Elliott sends Ox packing.

I still think the idea comes from people confusing Elliott, Wilson and Woodburn.

I don’t think Elliot’s rapid, but he’s quick enough. He’s certainly not Mane or Salah but he’s not a massive plodder like Shaqiri either.

He’s not going to be a consistent threat in behind but he is quick enough to run away from people after beating them, and he’ll be quick enough to keep up on the counter (like Firmino).

Speed can be coached and improved.

He doesn’t need to be Salah or Mane fast. He seems to have a good football brain and that’s very important and it’s harder if not impossible to teach

I’d still send Elliott out this year.

Klopp loves his “small squad” approach and what sense does it make for a 17 year old’s development to come on in the 86th minute every third or fourth match? Even in the face of an unprecedented injury crisis Klopp showed zero willingness to change his tactics to adapt to the personnel he had at his disposal.

The Domestic cup matches would be a nice opportunity for Elliott to stretch his legs, all 2 of them we play.

I highly doubt Elliott will get any significant minutes this season staying with the big club.

Well, some think he is the messiah and be our 5th choice CM and 5th choice Attacker at the same time.

Can he do a shift at right back?

And also, speaking of Klopp and his approach to substitutions :joy:

Asked for 5 subs but very often does not even use three and waits until very late to make his first.

Nope. Can not see many minutes for ‚Generational Talent‘ Harvey Elliott.

Was mental that lol. Was such an advocate for the sub rule to be changed then didn’t even take use of it. I’d be making subs needlessly just to prove a point.
