Liverpool FC - Pre-season

Yep, and he’s also just turned 18. In terms of doing a 60m sprint you’d typically expect to get half a second quicker from 18 to mid-twenties.

I don’t think he’ll ever be as quick as Mané or Salah but certainly fast enough.

Another thing.

In the last two years it feels like 90-95 of our games are very tight around the hour mark. We’re often behind, level or with just one goal up.

Klopp not one to take risks. Brings on defenders when we’re with one up. Brings on experience with Milner.

What makes people think he would bring on Elliott when the game is tight instead of Milner, Jones, Keita, Jota, Minamino, Matip …

I believe he said it was just in case of injuries.

No, he pretty much whinged about it every week in the face of fixture congestion.

I meant the third sub.

EDIT: He didn’t want to leave us a man down if we got someone injured, which was highly likely considering they didn’t get many breaks.

Ah ok. Sorry, I misunderstood.

Yes correct.

But still. I think substitutions is the one thing Fans are not really happy with Klopp during PL games.

Waits too long. Takes not risks (like for like). Makes just 2 subs.

I think someone else somewhere also did an analysis of substitution timings, and found that we were actually quite early with our subs, relative to the rest of the league. So while it may have felt like that, it wasn’t necessarily the case that he didn’t use them well…

Have you been in a matchday thread during a game? :joy:

Yes. I also know that perception should not be mistaken for facts.

What’s all the hysteria about lads? :astonished:

I see it differently, if for example he had the 5 subs he could start Tsimikas and if he was struggling he could sub him off and still have 4 more changes but with only 3 it’s a massive risk.

Yep and with 3 subs and players who will have been playing in the “Red zone” due to the fixture congestion he will have always had to have been worried about deploying the 2nd and 3rd subs in case injuries struck after he’d played his hand. With 5 subs he can make several tactical tweaks and still have one or two emergency solutions to turn to if required.

I‘m fine with Harvey‘s speed.
More important to me is how quick a player is in his head.
Is he already 18?.
I wouldn‘t send him on loan. Training in Liverpool and getting some minutes could help him more in his developement imo.

your point is of course, incorrect…John Barnes was no where near as fast as Sadio Mane, but he was still fast, and he didnt do too bad.

to suggest as you did that Harvey Elliot will not make it at Liverpool and should be sold to a club like York City is jumping the gun a bit, maybe he doesnt make it, but its too eary to write him off becuase hes not as fast as Usain Bolt.

Luis Suarez is also more about thinking fast rather than pace.

I get your point about Klopp preferring to work with a small squad but Elliott can be used in LC games and as a rotation option for CL group games then we can reassess his development in January.

If he does well in those games he could earn some games in the 2nd half of the season or we can loan him for 6 months to a lower PL or Championship team to get 6 months of first team football

Luis had great acceleration, balance and change of direction. But he had very average pace over any longer distance.

He made up for any physical limitations by being willing to do absolutely anything to get the slightest advantage. Sometimes it is the mental will that is the biggest difference at the highest levels.

Elliot is probably the most interesting player in the team this year. I’m very curious to see how his game has grown, how close he is to being ready, and just how good he can be

How boring is the “Elliot isn’t as fast as Mane and Salah” discussion getting by the way.
