Ben Doak’s sensational goal clinched a 4-3 win away at Rangers on Wednesday to put Liverpool U19s within touching distance of qualifying for the last 16 of the UEFA Youth League.

The Scottish winger decided the Group A fixture with a superb run and finish in the 80th minute at Partick Thistle’s Firhill Stadium.

The result now leaves the young Reds needing just a point against AFC Ajax on matchday five to guarantee top spot and therefore automatic progression to the knockout rounds of the competition.

Barry Lewtas’ side were 3-1 up in the contest after 35 minutes thanks to goals from Oakley Cannonier (two) and Melkamu Frauendorf.

But they had Lee Jonas sent off early in the second half that prompted a fightback from their Scottish opposition, before Doak intervened towards the closing stages.

A frantic start to the affair saw the opening two goals separated by a matter of seconds.

In minute eight, Liverpool went ahead with Cannonier’s sixth goal in this season’s competition when he tucked away a loose ball from close range after Doak had a shot blocked, having done brilliantly to beat Robbie Fraser.

But the hosts’ response was immediate and from the penalty spot. Jarell Quansah was ruled to have upended Zak Lovelace and that allowed Jason Lindsay the chance to beat Harvey Davies from 12 yards out.

Recovering from that particular setback, the Reds restored their advantage in the 18th minute.

Bobby Clark threaded a perfect pass that created an opening for Frauendorf inside the penalty area, with the latter beating Jacob Pazikas in the Rangers net with a composed finish.

Rangers nearly levelled quickly again but Davies saved well from Connor Allan, and Robbie Ure then headed wide from the goalkeeper’s deflection.

Lewtas’ charges capitalised on that let-off to make it 3-1 10 minutes before half-time.

Countering from a Rangers corner, Doak played a defence-splitting pass that sent Cannonier through on goal.

The No.9 brushed off the challenges of Jack Harkness and his initial shot was saved, before following up to grab his second of the afternoon.

The goal was Cannonier’s last moment in the game, as he was forced off before the restart with an apparent injury.

Liverpool’s task at holding onto the points was made more difficult when Jonas was dismissed for denying Ure a clear goalscoring opportunity two minutes into the second period.

Rangers halved the deficit just after the hour mark as Arron Lyall nudged the ball past Davies following a one-two with Lovelace.

Lovelace was again at the heart of the move that drew the Scottish side level. The forward ended a charge into the box with a scooped finish that clipped the post and fell kindly to Ure, who tapped in.

With one player fewer, it required a piece of magic to put the Reds back in front once more and ultimately snatch the victory.

Ten minutes before the end, Doak picked up possession near the right corner flag in Rangers’ half. The winger proceeded to skip past three blue shirts on his way to the penalty area, before finishing off the driving run with an outside-of-the-boot strike.

Liverpool U19s: Davies, Miles, Jonas, Quansah, Chambers, McConnell, Corness, Clark, Doak (Pilling, 92), Frauendorf, Cannonier (Koumas, 38).

Unused substitutes: Hewitson, Hayes-Green, Young, Kone-Doherty, Gyimah.

If you’re talking about who I think you’re talking about he’d have said “tairrrrable defending”.:nerd_face:

Just how good is this Doak lad? Like on the scale of our current side what’s his potential.

He’s sixteen. He could be a superstar (good Mo Salah) or he could be a total waste of space (bad Mo Salah).

Long way to go for the lad.

James Balagizi has undergone successful surgery for a groin injury after returning to Liverpool from his loan spell at Crawley Town.

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder is on a season-long loan with the League Two side, though his injury materialised after a spell away on international duty with England U19s earlier this month.

He was unable to take part in training with Crawley on his return and further assessment back on Merseyside revealed the groin issue.

It is hoped the successful procedure means Balagizi will be able to return to training in around five weeks.

Doak and Ramsey came on as subs in the second half. Doak created a goal for debutant Ramsay and Doak followed up with a goal of his own a minute later.

Finished 3-2 Accrington.

Of course it did. The English FA national teams set up seems to exist purely to feck our players up. :rage::nerd_face:

Liverpool U21s came from behind to earn a 2-1 Merseyside derby victory over Everton at the Academy on Saturday afternoon.

Stanley Mills opened the scoring for the visitors but goals from Jake Cain and Ben Doak saw the Reds earn the Premier League 2 spoils.

The Toffees started off on the front foot, twice forcing Harvey Davies into impressive saves as the goalkeeper ensured the scores remained level.

Everton, though, had their advantage after just eight minutes with Mills breaking free at a corner to prod home a loose ball.

Liverpool responded as Doak caused a scramble in the box while Jarell Quansah and Lee Jonas both headed over the bar from close range.

Barry Lewtas saw his side haul themselves back on terms on the half-hour as good pressing from Cain forced the visitors into a mistake, with the midfielder pouncing to lift the ball into the back of the net from inside the area.

Following the interval, the game struggled to develop into a pattern of play with neither side able to assert full control.

Pressure was finally applied by the Reds when substitute James McConnell struck the post with a low drive from distance to signal renewed intent.

Everton were forced into three last-ditch blocks at the resulting corner with Liverpool searching for an elusive winner as they pushed the Blues back.

Doak – who had proved a constant attacking threat on the right side – broke free to latch onto a ball over the top with 17 minutes remaining in what proved a decisive move.

The Scot cut inside thanks to tricky feet and unleashed an effort at goal that wrong-footed Zan-Luk Leban to settle into the back of the net.

He almost added a second just two minutes later following the restart with another mazy run, though Leban halted his advances.

Everton attempted a late reply with substitute Katia Kouyate striking the outside of the post, but the visitors were being kept at range in their bid to level.

Davies was again called into action in added time at the end of the encounter, saving low from Isaac Price to ensure the points were safe.

Liverpool U21s: Davies, Ramsay (McConnell, 45), Chambers, Quansah, Jonas, Corness, Musialowski (Koumas, 86), Stephenson, Doak (Miles, 90+3), Cain, Frauendorf.

Unused substitutes: Kelly, Spearing.

What’s up with Gordon, is he out injured or something?

I see that we’re lining up a good bunch of talents for the right side of attack.
