Liverpool Youth Teams Thread

I love challenging youth players to perform above their usual level and Port Vale certainly did that by putting out a very experienced side last night.

However, I am starting to have serious reservations about the benefits of this tournament in it’s current guise. International football and injuries conflicting when an “U21” team is supposed to play against grown men mean we have at no point fielded anything close to a strong line up.

It’s one thing to challenge players who are on the verge of first team football but being out in a position where we are playing guys who are not even starters at U18S level and fielding them against grown men is not exactly great development opportunity.

It would be one thing if we were sending out this kind of team…

Pitaluga
Williams Quansah Koumetio Beck
Morton Clarkson Cain
Gordon Stewart Musialowski

Instead it’s a shadow of that squad we have to play, and we even had to have two goalkeepers on the bench for the fixture simply due to lack of numbers.

This tournament is currently set up for the youth sides to fail and I think Liverpool should probably consider not entering a team next season.

Owen Beck scored the opener as Wales U21s thrashed Gibraltar 7-0, with his Reds U23s teammate Morgan Boyes appearing as a second-half substitute.
Tom Clayton played the last few minutes in Scotland’s U21’s 2-1 win over Kazakhstan U21’s

Blackburn 3-1 Liverpool latest score.
Clark with our goal.
Edit 3-1 FT.

U23s lost 3-0 to Crystal Palace. Not had a chance to see the game yet but will be interested to see the system… Looks like a midfield trip of Bajcetic - Bearne Clayton with Norris and Musialowski on the wing and Woltman at CF.

Some very weird places that players are being used by the U23s this season!

Was such a defensive team I thought. Got outclassed though. We had a light enough team out with the better lads on the bench yesterday for the firsts.

Liverpool U23s suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat by Crystal Palace at the Academy on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors were well worth their win in the Premier League 2 encounter, against a Reds team missing several regulars on the day.

A one-goal deficit at the break was stretched by another two in the second period and a comeback never looked likely, with the home side lacking cutting edge around the opposition box.

A quiet opening phase of the game proved to be the calm before the storm as Palace took the lead just before the quarter-hour mark.

The Reds lost the ball in midfield and Scott Banks advanced to unleash an unstoppable shot past Marcelo Pitaluga from 20 yards out.

It was almost two within a minute, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi finding only the side-netting from a good position in the Liverpool box.

The home side eventually stirred and went close to an equaliser courtesy of a fine effort from James Norris – playing on the left of the front line – after Jack Bearne’s shot had been charged down.

Palace were still continuing to set the pace, though, and were disappointed not to extend their lead from a huge goalmouth scramble following a corner.

A couple of fine diagonals from centre-back Billy Koumetio helped create some dangerous situations for the Reds, but they were still unable to trouble Joe Whitworth in the Palace goal.

Another loss of possession allowed the visitors to send in a dangerous cross from the left for Nya Kirby, who lent back on his half-volley and scooped it over.

Pitaluga was one of Liverpool’s better performers and kept the gap to one just before the interval as he did well to smother at the feet of John-Kymani Gordon.

The second half began in the worst possible fashion for the hosts as Palace won a penalty within three minutes, Jarell Quansah diving into a challenge on Omotayo Adaramola.

Banks stepped up to convert for his second goal of the game despite Pitaluga going close to a save.
Bearne hit a decent effort too close to Whitworth as the Reds tried to respond, while at the other end Rak-Sakyi dragged a shot wide after a cross evaded several defenders.

Stefan Bajcetic was forced off from his holding midfield position with just over 20 minutes left and within seconds Liverpool had conceded a third.

Kirby was one of three Palace players with too much space in the box and his shot on the turn was enough to beat Pitaluga.

Elijah Dixon-Bonner brought energy and direction off the bench as Barry Lewtas’ team went looking for a consolation, Tony Gallacher’s attempt was deflected on to the roof of the net with Whitworth scrambling, and Norris’ low drive was spilled by the goalkeeper but with no-one there to turn home the rebound.

The closest the Reds came was deep in injury time when the impressive Dixon-Bonner took Tom Clayton’s ball, cut inside and almost squeezed it past Whitworth at his near post.

Liverpool U23s: Pitaluga, Quansah, Gallacher, Koumetio, Boyes, Bajcetic (Corness, 70), Clayton, Bearne, Norris, Woltman (Dixon-Bonner, 75), Musialowski.

Unused substitute: Kelly.

Anyone know where the U19 game v Porto will be shown. It will be somewhere , probably on some obscure foreign station.

2 nil up against Porto. I haven’t caught it all… damn pesky job!

3-0 Woltman.

Only watched the second half but there have been some good performances from the reds. Would be great to see James Norris make it, he reminds me of a left footed Milner. Absolutely everywhere in this game.

4-0 Norris. He was so tired he could barely even kick it in. Well deserved goal.

Corness Bajcetic Norris
Gordon Woltman Frauendorf

Subs: Davies; Miles, Chambers, Mabaya, Clark, Musialowski, Cannonier

Players left out: Morton, Pitaluga

Balagizi and Blair injured.

On another note our list of injured players at youth level is pretty tough… Jonas, Ritaccio, Hill, Stephenson, Balagizi, McConnell, O’Rourke, Stewart and Blair all currently injured. Mabaya returned this week.

Was it 3 at the back or Bajcetic indeed as the #6?

I think it was our normal system. Bajcetic has played a few games as a 6 now.

It was the normal system. Bajcetic as the 6. A few loose passes towards the end of the second half but he looked really good otherwise.

Bradley and Beck impressed again, as did Frauendorf before being taken off. Gordon looked rusty.
