@Noo_Noo try cutting out the coffee.
I recommend, diluted by a 1/3 or a 1/4 depending on the sweetness, grape juice (grape juice contains all but a very few of the vitamins). Before drinking anything else drink water ubtil the thirst or hunger goes away, then enjoy the cup/glass of the ‘good’ stuff. (another detail is to drink water at ambient temperature (i.e not cold followed by a cold glass, the cold gets rid of the thirst ‘artificially’).

for hunger pangs try dried sausage, even if you havent teeth you can suck it (but be patient a dried sausage takes time).

Good luck mate, I’m willing you on.

Na, I’ve heard and read too many good things on coffee to ignore it, plus my last skiing holiday really turned me on to it. I had been avoiding it due to the high potassium levels but since cutting out meat my potassium levels have stabilised and I can slurp some black gold. None of that awful instant stuff though. No milk or sugar either and not very strong. First thing I do every morning is drink a pint of warmish water as well.

I’m managing ok during the day with the hunger pangs. Today was a little bit f a struggle but came through ok with a stick of celery, and a plum at 2pm. A few nuts at 4pm and then an evening meal at 7:30.

Now is the danger time, I’ve just put the little one to bed and I’ve still got work to do.

Thanks for that, I’ve often celery (but use it all up in my stews).
I’ve been racking my brain for ‘snack’ substitutes for those last ‘evening’ hours (in my case morning) before hitting the sack. Was on crisps and sweets which are both terrible. That’s when I came up with saucisson (btw realised it’s not a good one for you as they tend to be very salty, sorry and meaty, sorry).
I don’t do nuts (havent enough teeth left for that) they give me digestive problems.

So if anyone else has hunger pang advise please come forward.
(I’m thinking Celery and Radish at the moment? btw here in france they eat radish with butter :upside_down_face:)

A good slug of water is as good as anything I’d say.

Fruit does not work for me at all to stave off hunger.

Bread is evil. I’ll have a slice of toast or whatever, enjoy it but it instantly makes me want more of it.

One thing that might work would be a thick and creamy yogurt. I’ve found a coconut based yogurt here and if I have that with a few strawberries or blueberries or even in a berry smoothie its pretty filling.

I think protein is a key thing for this.

Yes and chewing or sucking. Which is why I came up with dried sausage.

Fromage frais, camembert … with celery or radish. Yogurt fine nutritionally but there’s not chewing so celery again with it?

Fruit is good if you need a snack while exercising, it’s no good as a pass the time snack as it’s full of sugars.

Cucumber or tomatoe could be good as a general day snack if needed as it’s got some sugar needs mashing can eat with cheese.

Any cereals like bread (particularly dry) I think is a no, too many carbs (ask @BigJon ).

All my stews have beans in them so a bowl of that wouldn’t be bad but I’d soon get sick of eating the same thing 2 or 3 times a day (it is my main meal).

Something that I found useful was feeling like I’d eaten enough during the day (to feel sustained) yet leaving some incentives (a small amount of sweets/etc.) for the evening when I am trying to unwind. I felt like it was a good balance between not overdoing it while also not feeling deprived.

Funny that you mention bread being evil — ice cream is my evil. I’m good to go get a scoop or whatever when out, but I can’t bring home a carton else it is gone stat. :see_no_evil:

When I became diabetic much advice was about glycemic index GI. This is connected to sugar spike (for diabetics) and hence insulin spikes (in ‘normal’ people). The thing is there’s a work around from what I could gather.
GI decreases with fat content, so chocolate has a low GI, mashed potatoe a high GI. To lower the GI of potatoes mash it and mix with butter or cheese. Rice mixed with cheese is very nice as are pastas.

Oh, just thought of apples with cheese that’s nice for a few bites.

Keeping busy works for me. I’m pretty certain I stress eat, and I also find that when I stop being busy everything in the cupboard is instantly an endangered species. Anything convenient is at immediate risk. That cookie jar for example or something with bread. Too easy.

Resisting quite well this evening but I had a decent meal followed by some strawberries and yogurt and I feel satisfied.

Must get that exercise sorted next, or moreover the motivation for it. From someone who used to train regularly, I’ve become an embarrassment. I need that target and focus though. Previously it was football or rugby or simply having to cycle to work. I might start getting out with the camera early mornings. Some good stiff hikes in the local mountains here like that.

to be honest, I started fishing rivers. it’s a decent exercise to spend hours walking knee-deep in rivers with a fly rod. but quite peaceful.

have to carry some nutrition for the day, so normally some beef jerky and an apple or a granola bar and water and a beer

A man after my own heart. We can walk miles up here fishing small upland lakes (llynoedd) for wild brown trout. Some really solid hikes up the mountains to get to them . My little one loves it but he’s too small to do the longer distances at the moment. Night fishing can be pretty special as well. Great exercise though.

Protein is key.
You could have a day not eating anything particularly bad for you but if it has no protein the next day I’m starving.
Saturday is the day I eat and drink what I want. If I’m going out on a Friday then I’ll swap it with the sat.
But after a day of drinking, having a takeaway and having some sweets I’m a) starving and b) glad to be eating healthier/protein again.

Walshy just got me thinking of boiled eggs as a snack.
Great thread this, I ask for solutions and come up with my own just reading other peoples completely unrelated stuff.

Hard boiled egg, a sliced tomato, a buttered Jacobs craker (or two) and a cup of black coffee…
Yummy :0)

Some foods I just cannot tolerate - Tomatoes and Strawberries give me a splitting headache within minutes of eating them and Nutmeg is a food I just hate the taste of. My son cannot tolerate bananas - he gets an immediate allergic reaction to them.

I think it was Jamie Oliver that had a Tomato and Strawberry salad with black pepper and nutmeg on one of his shows ages ago. Just watching it made me feel nauseous.

Strange how some foods affect people.

I can’t stand tomatoes, cucumber and 99% of vegetables.
I only really eat peas when it comes to greens.

Do you get a physical reaction to any as opposed to just disliking them?

I used to react to cheese, particularly, and milk as well. Went vegan for ten years and then found I didn’t react to it anymore. Still I don’t like large quantities, goats cheese makes me sick I dislike the flavor so much.
Dates make me heeve and I don’t like the flavor of green olives or olive oil.
I think that more or less covers it for me out side those few things I’m pretty much a dustbin.

I’ll have it all with only two caveats. Marzipan and desiccated coconut. WTF are these evil substances? They’ve managed to take perfectly wonderful foodstuffs and turn them into the most vile creations possible. :face_vomiting: :face_vomiting: :face_vomiting: :face_vomiting: :face_vomiting:

That aside, I have to be pretty strict with stuff thanks to my screwed up kidneys. I’ve paid a pretty hefty price for not doing regular health checks. Reducing animal products helps massively with the condition but is not helping on the weight loss front. Too easy to look at carbs etc. Then there’s veg and stuff that I also need to be wary of, avoid or be careful how much I eat - banana’s potatoes, certain tomato products mainly. Grapefruit is a no no because it reacts with some of the medication I’m on. Bummer.

Anyway, I’m awake this morning and I’m actually not hungry. Mentally, there’s something telling me to eat breakfast but I don’t need it.
