Losing the midriff "wobble" or the TAN diet/exercise thread

After a busy spring/summer with lots of social events (and therefore far too much drinking) I’m finally settling into a good routine. I’m doing low volume lifting with lots of cardio, hoping to lose at least a stone before the end of September, though I haven’t actually weighed myself yet.

Went for a 500m swim today, first time I’ve swam in years. Forgot how hard it is if you’re not breathing properly, especially in a 50m pool. After 3 respiratory illnesses in the previous 7 /8 months and pretty rubbish general fitness taking enough air in was a struggle.

Damn, how many of those were covid?

Just one.

I had the flu last december which wiped me out for 2 1/2 weeks and it left me with a chest infection for another 3 weeks.

Then covid in April and a cold in May, but having not fully recovered from covid the cold was probably the worst I’ve ever suffered and I had trouble with my breathing again. For a while (6 weeks at a guess) after recovering I was waking up in the mornings full of congestion.

That has finally stopped and my resting heart rate has finally come down. After covid and that cold I was hitting mid 60s, sometimes as high as 70. Right now it’s 55.

There seems to be a version of the cold (presumably one of the rhinovirus types) that hits post-covid particularly hard. I have heard something similar to your sequence quite a few times - and my eldest was struggling with breathing for two months. I don’t think he had covid, but bad seasonal allergies built on that.

Any idea what your resting heart rate was before the whole cycle?

Similar story here.

Lost 3 weeks due to a horror cold followed by another 3 weeks of Covid and then a 2 month hip injury.

Not a fun time made all the more frustrating with the longer summer evenings being an opportunity to do something.

Christopher Gardner of Stanford University conducted a randomised control trial of the Ketogenic diet v The Mediterranean diet. Both are considered low / lower carb. Neither diet can be cnsidered a “fad” diet - Keto diet advice (very low carb) was published as long ago as 1780 and the Mediterranean “diet” is - well ancient.

The results of the trial were pretty much a score draw. Although he seems to be coming down on the side of the Mediterranean diet overall.

Interesting interview on Zoe regarding the trial and results.

Can someone here set a benchmark in terms of running ?

Just back from my vacation and while I did do some mild shit… Need someone to set sometimes for me to get competitive…

Anyone up for this…

How about 5km in 25 min as a target tomorrow ?

Yes. Cricket today and I’m in agony from the waist down after Thursday nets. Give me till Tuesday.

I can’t hit that time yet but happy to work towards it. 2-3 minutes to make up.

That’s just not cricket mate

What I found is that endurance helps as well…

Try running an hourly run once every week… You’ll find the difference in your speed run as well.

I really do find that an issue.

Only last week on bike, pretty steep hill climb I blew up. I didn’t think I attacked the climb that hard but literally got to a point where there wasn’t a single pedal stroke left. 2nd time up, far more reserved pace and faired much better. I’ve had similar in running.

It never used to happen with anything.

A routine 13.6km run in 1hr 07 min. I say routine because I get a perverse pleasure knowing that I can overtake some young upstart who deigns to overtake me and then outlast him till his scrawny arse gets tired anytime.

I have yet to try and better my 21km run… Which is at 1:50 so far… I think I can but then it’s getting to be a pain w.r.t workload trying to squeeze in 2 hrs or so.

Maybe Sunday , I’ll give it a whirl… With carrying some proper hydrations etc … that’s another thing for me that I have to learn to get used to… Carrying a water bottle while running.

ive started my fitness kick again

I had to give gym up around March due to a trapped nerve in my neck, shoulder and tricep that they thought may need an operation. After several sports massages I no longer need the operation so will re-join the gym…I think…I just find the gym so fucking boring. So not 100% sure yet. My work will pay for it through their Wellbeing Scheme If I do. I may get a bike and they would pay for that as well.

I want to play walking football but I’m too young at 47. I cannot play normal football as my left knee is shot after 5 Ops and I think I need another one or investigation at least as my knee and thigh hurt after a period of moving.

I’m doing a walk of a morning and evening as working from home so Im trying to move more.

Borrowed a bike as well so going out on that a few nights a week.

I’ve put on nearly a stone since Jan so need to shift it as I’ve started feeling uncomfortable in my clothes. I never weight myself (since the days of Weight Watchers when I went from 18.6 stone to 14.9 stone) I just go by how my tightest Tshirt fits and at the moment it makes me look like a Richmond Sausage.

I can empathize with that. My right knee doesn’t feel the same ever since the reconstructed patella. Oddly enough I started jogging because it had lesser impact on my kneecap than what brisk walking had.

That said , I cannot kick the ball with any strength at all with my right leg which is my main one and whenever I do play football , it’s mostly something where I can chase the ball down and then make a short pass. It’s damn frustrating but it is what it is

Yeah same. I have had 2 torn meniscus, my hamstring taken out and pinned to back of my knee to keep it in place, shin broken to have a metal plate put in as i was walking funny with hip, knee and ankle like a banana and not in line - that also helped create a fake cartilage which distribute the weight better as knee is crumbling on right hand side - then had it taken out after 2 years.

My left foot was like a wand but this was on my left knee after going up for a header and coming down awkward in 2005.

I can kick a ball but not with same precision or power. Its so annoying as I used to play 3 or 4 times a week.

Has anyone used Vibrams or other minimalist shoes?

My ankle mobility is terrible and my feet are weak. I’m debating buying a pair to walk around the house and walk the dog in, and maybe the odd short run. I’ve spent most of my adult life working in safety shoes and I’m convinced they wreak havoc on your natural mobility/stability with their heel drop and construction.

Maybe @Arminius can give more input on this.

For me and my overpronation , I’ve gone ahead for stability shoes for running and the minimalist ones def don’t suit me.

I find the topic of minamalist shoes interesting though. But it’s not for me.
