I have felt for a while that between Liverpool, Barcelona and Diaz, seeing out his contract on relatively low wages for the next couple of years and then leaving in a free works out for everyone.
I think that would be very dangerous from Diaz’s point of view.
Barca probably can’t “promise” anything for this transfer window, let alone what will happen in the summer of 2027.
We are in a good position. We have a smashing player who we would be happy to keep. If an offer comes in that turns our head, and the player is up for it, I would imagine we would sell, but we aren’t especially pushing for that.
The Saudis offered 100M for Bruno, who is 2 years older. That gives an indication of the price we would expect from them for Diaz. If Barcelona make an offer, assuming they have real money, I would imagine we would go lower, but not ridiculously lower, say 75-80M.
It’s now up to everyone else to get their ducks in a row to move the dial.
From a sporting perspective, Barcelona are obviously a lot more appealing, but do they have the dough for Diaz? Let’s see. And if not, and the Saudis make an offer, he might take the money, secure his family for generations, and satisfy his remaining sporting ambition by playing for his country and leading them in the World Cup.
We can be chilled about this one.
Edit
If he does go, I’d like to see us sign Malik Fofana, or someone similar. Young, fast, skill for days, more improvement to come. He could be more of a squad man for us as he develops further. As things stand there is no room, but that might change.
Whilst I broadly agree with your post, much depends upon who else leaves. If Lucho goes, it is reasonable to assume that Cody will become the “starter” on the left wing, so that would mean Jota, Nunez, Chiesa and even Doak and Ngumoha can fill in when needed… depending upon who is still here next season.
Yep. I see plenty of depth off the left, and two starter level players in Gakpo and Diaz… so if an offer comes in that moves our hand, so be it.
Presumably Wirtz will be signed, and depending on outgoings, I would imagine another striker will be signed too, as Nunez probably won’t be in Slot’s plans.
A few twists and turns yet, this summer. As for Diaz, we are in a great position. We either keep a very good player, or sell him for a tidy sum that is enough to move our hand, if the player wants to.
Fuck that. Barca can pay at least equal to what others offer or they can get nicked.
You guys are forgetting the mandatory Edwards tax on Barcelona.
I have a lot of sympathy with the viewpoint. If someone else offers say, 100M, it is incumbent on Barcelona to match it. Seems fair enough!
What I think might happen is that we would accept a slightly lower bid from them - and I stress, only slightly lower - if Diaz really wants to go there. Just speculating on that though. If Barcelona want him, pay us the dough.
On a related note, do they have any players (realistic, so not Yamal) who we would want, that could help to get a deal done?
I don’t think we will be actively working to make this happen, as Diaz is a good player, but I’m sure our negotiating team has already thought through various permutations.
I’d love Fermin Lopez, although we dont really have a need for him. Ferran Torres I think would do well in this front line as well. Both are probably gettable from Barca if we wanted them without having to wave a player we want to keep in front of them.
Honest and mature. I’d like him to stay, but if they can find a good deal and a good replacement, good luck to him.
A classy goal by Diaz against Argentina.
After that goal, Barca will have to pay for Barcola to move to Anfield.
100 million thank you. That’ll do nicely.
Barcelona finalising Williams deal. Hopefully this thread can be put to bed.
Also rumours that Bayern are trying to gazump Barca to Nico Williams which would reopen the possibility of Diaz to Barca
Bayern can’t afford Luis.
The stingy fucks need to come up with atleast the 120m bid for tentative discussions.
