Luis Diaz (LW) Barcelona

The article’s closing paragraphs are interesting, though - I got the impression that Liverpool are willing to sell him if the price is right, that no new contract is even remotely close to being agreed. For what it’s worth, I still think he leaves if they get a satisfying offer.

So many conflicting reports. Some say we are offering him a new deal but this says we aren’t?

The article suggests the club have been trying to get him to agree a new contract but the player is holding off.

“However, Liverpool have no plans to open talks with Díaz, who has two years left on his existing deal and will turn 29 midway through next season.”

“Liverpool’s new-look hierarchy, led by sporting director Richard Hughes and Fenway Sports Group’s chief executive of football Michael Edwards, has sought to address the contract issue — however progress has not materialised.”

Yeah, I saw that in Ornstein’s article. Frankly, I’m inclined to believe that they will be looking to sell him for the right price. It’s a game of words but this paragraph in particular caught my attention:

“Diaz was of interest to Manchester City last summer and also has admirers in Saudi Arabia. Yet the recent pursuit of Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, 30, by Al Hilal helped Liverpool establish Diaz’s market price.”

Yes, the article says they will deal if they get a good price for him, so this may all be part of that negotiation process.

Fans’ rage about Diaz potentially leaving on a free and the club being fine with it in 3, 2, 1…

:joy:

But I also think everything is still possible. Also, many transfer windows until the summer of 2027, including this one of course.

A lot depends on the market and also what we don’t know much about right now, what Diaz wants to do.

To an extent i agree, but going by what his father says every couple of weeks , im sure those conversations have happened that he would like to play in Spain.

My god, we cannot even get around to making a bid on our own players.

Just send the fax, Richard

Sounds like posturing to me.

Publicly let everyone know we’ve told Barca to fuck off because we’re not interested in their nonsense. Make that abundantly clear to Diaz too and if he wants to push for it then it’s on our terms or he stays for two more years with no new contract.

But, whilst saying he’s not for sale but no new contract is in the offering we’re opening up the discussion on his future.

Big Saudi money changes our stance or he kicks up a fuss, makes himself the bad guy and forces Barca to not be dicks.

Didn’t think he’d be off this summer but I think this makes it more likely.

We are just :rightwards_pushing_hand: ng for a bid from Saudi i guess. His contract runs till June 2027. So our idea is to let him go free unless we accept a big bid from Saudi. He deserves a new contract in my opinion if we have plans to keep him. His wages is 35k - 55k going by various reports and we feel just holding him for two years without a hike is profitable even letting him go on free. Hopefully a big bid changes it or he gets a new contract.

Is there any indication that the player would be interested in Saudi? Presumably, Barcelona appeals more to him than a substantial increase to his 5 groats a year that he earns with us.

I’m assured that he wants to play in Spain, not a Mickey Mouse league in the desert.

I think at he is 29, has 2 years and only earns £55k a week we dont mind letting him leave for free in 2 years as we wouldve had extreme value out of him.

But if Barca come back with a decent offer then we will consider.

Feel a bit for Diaz - he is way down the wage list compared to others.

Poor soul. How does he cope?

How do we cope with not getting a bigger fee for Trent?

:joy:

I mean £55k is silly but he sits there and listening to Mo and Vvd getting the big bucks and must think he is worth at least treble his current wage. £160k a week seems about right.

This is a good lesson for the other side of the story.

At one point, all possible emotions aside (less than the outside world thinks), both sides make moves that they believe are best for themselves.

Do we even know if that figure is true?

We know that we also heavily incentivise contracts. If that £55k figure is true, which is nearly £3m a year before we start to feel sorry for him, I’d bet what he actually gets paid is far beyond that.

Others have earned their guarantees over years of service. He was clearly very happy to sign the contract we offered him when he joined.

If he wants to earn more than that in the next two years he needs to persuade Barca or someone else to pony up a decent fee for us.
