I thought that for a while, we might allow Diaz and Jota to see out their contracts, or allow them to go into the final year, barring ridiculous offers for either or both of them. It’d mean less upheaval and allow the upgrades, or younger replacements to be brought in incrementally.
Then again, it also depends on the players, and whether Diaz may want a final payday and try to force a move.
We’ll see, summer of 2026 and 2027 can be a long time in football, lot of things can happen. But for next season, we might be just comfortable keeping him on the current deal and going with him for at least one more season.
Resale value has only ever been part of the equation. Squeezing as many productive years as you can out of a player, even to the point there is no resale value left at the end, has always been the preferable outcome for a player it costs us money to acquire.
It’s not just an Olmo problem. It has been a problem every summer for at least the past 4 years. It was the primary reason Messi was forced to leave even though neither party wanted it to happen, but his contract extension was classified as a new contract and they simply didnt have the room to add it to their books.
It is total BS Bayern have started the hissy fits because of their failure to sign Wirtz. First they started with Gakpo and now Diaz. Next will be Macca and Szoboszlai.
We are in a very good position. We either keep a very good player, or we accept an offer if he wants to move on, on the condition that the offer is sizable enough for us to reinvest or offset the spending we have already done, and will continue to do.
I’m seeing a 4321 shape emerging, nominally. Wirtz and Salah will be the 2. A new striker, or possibly Diaz, will be the 1. Macca, Grav and Dom will be the 3.
Kerkez, Virg, Konate and Frimpong will be the four, but crucially, the fullbacks will have license to get up the pitch and provide width, and Grav will tuck in defensively as needed.
It is going to be really exciting, and you don’t let go of a player like Diaz unless the money is right.
My best guess is a sale, but it could go either way and the club has leverage to not be pushed about.
Marco’s brother was an inveterate drunk and stamp collector, who spent his days dribbling into the canals of Venice while singing ancient folk songs from Macedonia.
Brilliant player. And by god we saw that at moments, especially early in the season, but I am a bit over it now.
We are an in-demand club, and if Barca don’t try to massively low-ball us (that’s an if with about 400 asterisks), then I would bring in another forward that might suit what we are moving to a bit better, knowing that Gakpo is pretty effective at being that support forward on the left.
As good as he is, we could come out ahead if we traded him in knowing we are going to be playing a bit differently to what we have been with Florian in the side.
