Luis Diaz (LW) Bayern Munich

Why would you cheer him, I hope we smash his new team to kingdom come.

I assume you wouldn’t boo him, no I wouldn’t. Not cheering other teams players though. He can have a mild applause.

Yes, that.

No hard feelings. Welcome. Applause. Game on. And hopefully we smash them.

I think that if we sell two outof Nunez, Elliot, and Chiesa, then we will need to buy another forward.

What is this supply and demand jibberish that you speak of?

Do you consider Elliott a forward? He has never really convinced at RW.
His best position is AM, but lack of a clearly defined role in our team may be his downfall.

I don’t agree that selling him means we need a replacement as we have Flo, Dom and Jones who can play there.

I know he’s not really a forward, but if Nunez and Chiesa follow Diaz out the door perhaps there could be a role for him as an inside forward, which may be an approach we’ll see more of next season. Of course he wouldn’t get regular game time, which is what he wants.

Jones isn’t an AM. Flo , Dom and Elliot are. And to an extent Chiesa as well.

If we do change the formation post Diaz leaving. We would need all the reinforcements we get for AM. Atleast that’s what it looks like right now. Us ditching the winger philosophy with the wingbacks being the ones providing the width.

Regarding Elliot as a potential replacement, it’s true his biggest issue is what on earth is his best position. But what’s undeniable is his attitude and hard work and while people think he is all just about running but his output of goals and assists are actually on a very good level in the last 3 seasons as far as per minutes played. That is something people don’t see as much. I feel that Slot is not concerned about having a speedster down the wing rather wanting someone who has that burst past one defender.

As for Diaz, it’s unfortunate he wants to leave but he leaves as a champion.

Yeah, I’m also a bit disappointed. Especially knowing that he was earning around 140k a week with us, and was offered a contract extension on better terms by the club, so it’s not as if he was badly treated or undervalued by the club. I’m also stunned that Bayern agree to pay him more than the quoted figures…

Anyway, no hard feelings against the lad, nor against the club for letting him go. Just a tad of disappointment, also that he quits a squad which is still reeling from the loss of Jota, and a bit of worry that the loss of those two players in one single summer, despite some hopefully quality signings, might handicap us this season.

Problem with this is we keep double counting players for multiple positions.

Frimpong can cover Salah for AFCON.
Wirtz can play RW.
Dom can play 8 or 10.
Etc, etc…

Flexibility is good but we’ve got to be wary that you can only play each player in one position at a time. All last season we wanted more players Slot trusted to start. If we’re moving on some of those he didn’t seem to trust, like Quansah, Elliott and Chiesa then we absolutely need to replace them.

Maybe you count Wirtz as an Elliott replacement but if Diaz and Chiesa go you absolutely need at least one high quality replacement and then Ngumoha you could have as a sixth option or you flex a Dom or Wirtz in as a short term gap fill. But you can’t go into next season with five forwards and one of them be either Elliott or Chiesa.

Trent winds his contract down and leaves for free and we condemn him

Diaz takes the other path to not getting the contract he wants by coordinating with the club to get an exit at a time of peak value for us and we condemn him for that.

I think he just wanted a bigger pay bump than we were willing to offer. I think he would have renewed here if we met his salary demands.

I’m glad Bayern was willing to pay us a solid fee. It could have been worse if he insisted on Barca - they could have lowballed us and perhaps the funds we need to buy Isak and Guehi wouldn’t be available to us.

Good luck to him. Served us very well while here and we made a little profit when leaving.A successful transfer imo.

Don’t see what’s random about Bayern, it’s not like he signed for Sevilla?

One of the biggest clubs there is, they win things regularly, challenge of a new league, there’s a position in the team for him (plus the ability to backup Kane centrally), plus he’s found a place that’s willing to pay him on a 5+1 year contract, well into his 30’s.

Perhaps the only question was whether the life aspect in Germany was appealing to him and his family. And it turns out they agreed to it all.

I think everyone knows we’re trying to unload him. Whatever the discussions the club is having for him aren’t coming to fruition yet. I wouldn’t be so anxious. They know what they’re doing over there.
