Luis Diaz (LW) Bayern Munich

Both wanted to leave. Both engineered their move.

Only difference is at what stage of the contract they did it.

But people were more pissed at Trent because he was a local lad and he timed his move so that the club got very little compensation for him leaving.

It’s not that deep and people can feel differently about both moves.

It can be said that footballers right now seem to be peaking earlier. There’s no hard and fast rule that Diaz is entering his peak years as a footballer. For all we know , he might have reached his peak as a footballer and its downhill from that.

The Bundesliga is a more forgiving league than the EPL in terms of the competitiveness of the team so I suppose that it will be easier on his body.

I’m not complaining. We either use this money to buy a younger footballer in that position or we use that money to help strengthen the team elsewhere.

Diaz has been great for us but he’s not essential. Not good enough to be an essential Liverpool player. He gets a pay hike in Bayern playing with a competitive team. Even if it’s a step down. We get good money for him. Not as much as I would have liked but the best teams improve by upgrading the starting XI. We now have a chance to do that

Mental gymnastics at best. Again, because Trent is Trent and Diaz is Diaz.

Trent gave the club 2 years to prepare for his departure. If a player isn’t signing a new contract when he’s on his last two years, there’s likely a reason for that. It’s not hard to take the hint. The club almost certainly knew what was going on.

Diaz on the other hand gave the club about 3 weeks. Yay! Money! I would 100% take Diaz running out his contract and us getting 2 more years out of him than to take the money and gamble on a new player.

That’s the difference: you want the FM money; I want the performing player we already have (had).

That completely depends on what the club offered him on their attempts to re-sign.

If they offered him huge wages but on a two year contract, that’s him in out team while still in his 20s. We don’t need to be talking about age on someone in their 20s, even if we are talking about the tail end, especially for a player that hasn’t even shown signs of deterioration.

Trent had no intention of finding himself out of contract at 30, and looking for a big deal with his earning potential diminished.

Why is Diaz given the benefit of wanting a bumper payday as he approaches his twilight years and Trent isn’t?

The club isn’t dependent on players giving it time to prepare.

This is Liverpool, a top of the football food chain organization, that has a reputation of high level of operating.

Contracts and length of contracts are almost a daily topic, under review, conversation, well informed of potential outcomes. Especially once you get close to or go past the two years left on a contract mark, let alone less than that.

It’s different for example when Klopp announced it to the club, because it’s not the same type of career/role/market. And yes, there is the aspect of changing a lot of personnel in the directors layer of the club, either new people being employed or known faces, in new roles. Some of the “damage” was already done in past years.

It doesn’t mean they can’t run into surprises, but it can happen from any party. The club are well aware of likely and possible scenarios before 90% of the outside world is, media and (especially) fans.

Players are not there to mostly think how much money will their club make and how much time the club has to prepare their replacements.

When players are running down their contracts and the club basically know about it, they are 100% not going to let the fans know, because it’s going to create snotty and unsettled the player and playing group.

So yeah, I agree we as fans are usually well behind in terms of what the club knows.

He gave us a years notice once it became clear that the salary we would offer him didn’t match what he felt he was worth. The club were still offering Trent a contract halfway through last season; clearly they thought it possible he would stay. Think you’re a bit confused as to how the two players have behaved.

Apologies as I haven’t yet taken my medication but this back and forth is pointless and tedious.

A simple google to discover Trent’s age would help you with that one.

I think we are trying to find something to get offended by when there is nothing to. Both are players who leave the club. Both are winners with the club. They are and will be ex players who move on and we will and should too. I don’t see a difference between these 2 or any players who leave, except those who leave us by disrespecting us and these 2 definitely don’t fall into that category

Sad to see Luis go, wish him the best of luck asides from actually winning with his new club. Really gutted that we won’t be singing his song again

Sorry. Nope.

Trent strung the club along for one year. He made up his mind to leave when Klopp left. The only way he’s was getting to the Madrid team was on a free.

Had he extended his contract with Liverpool. Madrid wouldn’t have come in for him.

And sometimes it’s impossible to know 100% what a party feels deep down. People also change opinions and motivations, it’s natural.

It’s why it’s rarely one “guilty” party for an outcome, because at this top level, you by default have to be aware of different scenarios.

It’s not easy to get out of Liverpool and Liverpool that are doing well, to another similarly big or bigger club. And not to forget the fact that we don’t do clauses.

The days of a handshake being enough for an agreement are well behind us. Perhaps they still happen in a smaller %, but at a much lower level than we operate.

The only thing you wish for is for everyone to be at least in a respectful relation, professional and give maximum effort during the duration of contracts. And I have no serious criticism around a few of the last ones that have left on a free; Can, Gini, Trent.

Everything else falls to simply different sides assessing each other almost daily, negotiating, trying to find agreements, having the same or possibly different motivations for the future.

Mostly motivated to reach the best possible outcome for themselves.

We already had him on contract for another two years, so there was no chance of that. It would have had to be an extension on existing terms or an increase that didn’t meet his expectations.

Loved Luis as he always gave is all everytime he put on the shirt.

He has left and like Trent I hope he is a success but not in any competition that we are in.

If attempting to be a smartarse is the order of the day:

A simple Google to discover Trent’s minutes would help you with that one.

So you don’t have to go looking: TAA: 28,000 mins Vs Diaz’s 25,000 minutes in top tier football (excl second division). A 40yo Land Cruiser that’s done 100k is going to last longer than a 20yo Land Cruiser with 250k. You see Trent being 2 seasons younger than Diaz and I see Trent 1 season older than Diaz.

None of that’s even taking into consideration the fact that our FBs do an extreme number of high intensity sprints per match.

It’s not exactly going out on a limb to suggest Diaz will have a more prolonged remaining career at the top end than Trent.

You are a rarity on here. It seems plenty on here are still offended by Trent’s departure.
