But that is what Redarmada is pointing out, he feels Virg could have worked a little harder to get in a better position. For me it is Virg’s one weakness, it seems as he thinks that the closest defender will deal with it and when/if they don’t, he sometimes isn’t in position to cover.
As you said Joe was the same in this situation, could have been in a better covering position.
I’m sure Arne and his team of coaches will be pointing this out to the defenders, midfielder or forwards.
Just as we air our thoughts on defensive errors, we all make mistakes or look back and think I could of, should have done better.
Virg’s recovery runs, is one, possibly the only one of Virg’s weaknesses, sometimes he just doesn’t see the danger and that the nearest defender won’t deal with the siituation.
He singled out Virgil for criticism. I rejected that and pointed out a succession of things other players could have done better (should have in some instances), but also conceded that Leicester executed the opportunity very well and were still aided by a bit of good fortune with the deflection.
If you look at the whole sequence, they moved the ball across our forwards, through our midfield, from one side of the pitch to another, before putting in a cross under little pressure that found its way to a player who was marked and should not have been able to get on the end of it who then scored. In that whole sequence only one Liverpool player did enough defensively to have any impact on what a Leicester player was able to do, and that was Virgil in boxing out Daka on the cross. Criticizing him for not then subsequently getting over quick enough to help Robbo when the shot happened only a fraction of a second later is just not reasonable. Doing so because he didnt look like he was trying enough is the sort of criticism I cannot believe we are still making about him after 6 of years of seeing that is just how he moves, and that he covers ground with an Usain Bolt style look of effortlessness even when he’s giving it his all.
If people want to disagree that is fine, but my opinion is Virgil often singled out for criticism he doesn’t deserve. we expect so much from him to the point of sometimes acting like the only way a team can score is if Virgil is not on his game so when a team scores on us and we’re angry and want to blame someone that becomes an easy answer. IMO, this was one of those times.
Virg can appear fairly casual in his style at times. His calm approach is overwhelmingly an asset. He has been brilliant for us, and continues to be. I hope he gets a 2 year extension.
Several people could have done a bit better for their goal yesterday, including Virg, and the other part of it is that it was a good move by Leicester, as they had their own agency in the goal they scored.
3-1. Top of the league. Virg is fantastic and I hope he signs a new deal.
Yet, I think he sometimes is slow in his recovery runs.
And with your remark you don’t disagree as there is no argument.
We all in life no matter of expertise get things wrong or misjudge things and if Virg Joe & Robbo on that goal don’t see where they could have improved then it is time to sell.
My stance throughout the 3 contract renewals is that Virg is the most important, so I am not just getting at Virg, but the one critism I have is his revovery runs to support other defenders, he occasional lacks effort with rehards to them and so did Joe on this occasion
If Robertson just defends the situation properly then everything else is moot. He gets beat physically then turns his back, losing sight of the ball and makes a move away from Ayew which allows the time to shoot. If he doesn’t turn his back he doesn’t jump the wrong way and the goal doesn’t happen.
I don’t see it getting much comment but Robertson’s defending has seen an alarming downturn recently. He’s actually as good as ever attacking but these last two months he’s had way too many defensive mistakes. If Trent was the one making these errors he’d be getting absolutely crucified for it.
Agreed, defensively he’s become a liability this season. I’d still have him ahead of Tsimikas but it’s time to start looking for someone to take over on a more permanent basis.
It’s precisely because we’ve seen him for 6 years that we know he can be better, a lot better. It’s unfair to single him out, I agree, but that comes with the territory of being the best defender in the world. We expect more from him and we look to him as captain and leader to set the tone. I don’t think that he’s been up to his own standards lately and it has translated across the team and its defensive record.
I don’t want to sound as if I’m some hater. I don’t have any favourites ever since Torres left but Van Dijk and Robertson come the closest to it. I get no kicks by posting stuff like this.
He was poor and seems to have lost too many 1 v 1 duels this season, he & the club need to manage his minutes this season and time for him to consider how many games he plays for Scotland.
I also think if Joe and Virg had been more pr active with their recovery runs they coul have been better placed to cut out the cross.
They have two years to look at his performances and then decide whether they want to take him. And at that point, United better be hoping that he doesn’t impress them too much otherwise they are going to need to pay him a 300k per week contract just to keep hold of him.
