Mohamed SALAH: 2021/22

So next July, as we already knew. Unless Barça have been cheating with finances again.

So, that means Barcelona are guilty of ‘tapping up’ Salah then. I doubt Liverpool have given them permission to speak with him, but it’s reported they’ve offered him a contract? If it’s true, I’m very disappointed with Salah, telling the club and fans he’s staying for next season and then fucking everyone about, by changing his mind. If that’s the case, he can go now for me.

Isnt the article just saying what we already knew, that he is gone after next season?

Is it? Maybe I misread it. It’s still tapping up by Barcelona though. Under the rules, he’s not allowed to negotiate a contract with them until January.

Didn’t LFC ‘tap up’ VVD?

Anyways, Salah made it clear that he’s staying for the 22/23 season. If no new contract terms can be agreed within the coming season, he’s free to go wherever he wants.

That’s ok, we’re allowed :joy:

Not really. He is apparently settled and happy in Cheshire, his family are happy, kids in school etc.

We sometimes forget that players have families.

I have always felt that, given the way football is going with elite players, the default route for most players at Salah’s level is run down the contract and leave on a free.

I fully expect Mo to see out next year and leave for Barca, Real or PSG.

Wider than this though, it really highlights the urgent need for UEFA and FIFA to get to grips with escalating player salaries. The reason why Salah, with some justification, can say that he should be paid in the 400k ballpark is because the wage market for elite players has been totally thrown out of all whack by a handful of clubs (usually oil backed) paying monstrous salaries. PSG have just thrown something in the region of a million a week at MBappe to persuade him to stay. This is dangerous to football.

Clubs are going to end up ripping themselves apart as the wages continue to rise.

We need a salary cap. At least that would force the likes of Salah into a binary choice. Does he want a disproportionate slice of that pie, or does he want quality players around him to increase his chance of individual and team honours.

Then why move at all ? I can understand footballing reasons, or even family reasons but short of falling out with someone there’s no real reason to leave us and move 30 miles down the road is there? Have I missed something?

@Mascot I agree there needs to be some sort of salary cap and structure around salaries, especially as the artificially inflated clubs in particular have so skewed the market. Some traditional giants have too, like Barcelona and Man Utd, and have increased their debts to do so.

Anyway, the point is, some sort of cap is needed. Probably based on a percentage of income.

However… after the inability to enforce FFP, few can be confident that even a robust salary cap would not be abused by those who have no intention of being restrained financially.

No, a day trip to Blackpool is not tapping someone up.:grin:

I think the issue was that we believed we had the right to talk to him as his agreement with Southampton specified he could freely discuss terms with CL clubs.

They disputed we counted as we finished fourth and still had to play a qualifier.

I can see their point of view, even though it feels a bit pedantic. In any case a misunderstanding rather than a mendacious act.

If I’m correct, he’s the first Liverpool player in history to win this award twice.
