Mohamed SALAH: 2021/22

Totally agree.

If he starts pulling that back injury bollocks then it changes the picture slightly

In my life time supporting the reds

We lost Fowler, got Owen , lost Owen, got Torres, lost Torres, got Suarez, lost Suarez, got Salah.

Salah won’t be here forever… he will leave or he will
Stay and eventually retire (or go MLS etc at 36).

Legends have come, legends have gone and legends will come in the future.

In Klopp I trust

I feel the sample size isnt really big enough with these things to really show any clear pattern. I can maybe see a small reason to cite players from outside Klopp’s era, but I think really it needs be players Klopp has lost/allowed to leave. There has been a good number, but with very limited exception, every one was one he told or encouraged to leave. Oher than young players who needed to leave to get the playing time they needed to improve, I wouldn’t expect any of those to have better careers elsewhere than they had with us. That really only leave Phil and maybe gini as players remotely comparable to the situation of Mo leaving. Sure, that’s an 0-2 record on walking away from liverpool being bad, but it’s also too limited a set to lean on in thinking about how Mo might fare.

Did we replace Suarez? Not really and we suffered because of it. We got Nunez as part of Owen deal, not really replaced?

This period is as good as it gets because of the quality of players and manager we have.
Salah is at the moment pivotal to that success. Diaz, Jota will be fine players in their own right but neither have Salahs goal scoring abilities. Not yet anyway.

No player is bigger than the club (Coutinho) but some players are extra special and Salah is one of those players.

The one that always sticks with me was when Keegan left we got Dalglish. There have been times when players have left and we have struggled to find a direct replacement. Of that period, Souness comes to mind.

Salah is clearly going to be good for a few years yet but the biggest problem we have is when we don’t replace ageing superstars in time.

We just don’t bring proven top players/serial winners from other top clubs. Almost never.

Thiago was a rare example close to it, but then there was the age and ending contract factor.

But it’s not like we necessarily need one to replace Salah in his position.

We’ll just continue down our known route, a performing individual with the best years ahead of him, coming from a club of somewhat lower level, who we believe can go a step ahead within our team.

There have been a couple of cases in recent years where we have pushed the boat out and signed an essential player at all cost: van Dyke and Alisson specifically spring to mind. FSG do play the moneyball game, though and they are constantly looking for players who have fallen off the radar but whose attributes specifically meet our requirements.

I think this is the right approach. If you are signing a highly rated player that doesn’t fit the system or altering your entire team for the benefit of said superstar it isn’t going to work. I think PSG are discovering this.

Yeah but those were also not proven players at top clubs who won stuff. Virgil wasn’t even a regular international and played for Groningen/Celtic/Southampton. Alisson had, what, a season and a half of club football at Roma. For both of them, Liverpool at the time represented a step up. We can say that they played at a high level and obviously there were reasons why we paid top money for them. There was competition also. It’s not only under FSG, it goes back. Obviously it’s not like the Real Madrids of this world bring top players in their peak from other top clubs every transfer window, but at some places it happened and happens more often than here. Maybe in the future under different circumstances upstairs we might do it more often. But like I said, it’s not like we really need it to be able to compete and win.

I thought it was widely understood that this was all a bit of show, being fully aware that PSG were not going to accept.

Alonso and Mascherano in the success category.

Agree with Alonso but not so sure with Mascherano. Depends on how we measure - in his case it was about Barca’s failing rather than his?

I think thats why @Limiescouse says allegedly. It would be intetesting to know how much they would have genuinely been willing to pay.

Well, he went to Barca, was a mainstay of their team for years and won loads of stuff, so I don’t think he belongs in the category of players who left LFC and went on to regret it.

Well no he wont regret it, but i thought he was in and out of the team, often having to play CB to get game time?

Don’t think there’s any doubt that Masch has been a success both for us and when he left us.

lol, its probably how my company forecasts sales too

Thiago , Alli

Not sure any new incoming guy would kick off for Liverpool immediately like what Salah did.

I didn’t mean direct replacement but I meant the next hero etc

It’s true he was moved back to defence, but I don’t think that’s something that counts against him. Just a pragmatic move in relation to their playing style. He became a regular for one of the best and most successful teams of the last 20-30 years, as well as being recognised as one of the best defenders in the game, so I’d say he most definitely moved up the ladder after leaving Liverpool.
