Been like that for sometime, I can see why he would probably go now, he will be 34 at the next World Cup or close to it and I can’t see a team coming through to be honest. One thing I have noticed at Liverpool he doesn’t carry the team but with Egypt it seems like it’s everything.
His view point really has to be on the African nations cup and whether he thinks they can win that or is his career best served domestically.
Make sense on a way to retire from Internationals,if he does,.
He is a one man band to a fair degree in Egypt,he is not here as there is a lot of support around him.
It was great to see him and Mane having a chat at the Senegal game, there has occasionally been some chatter about rivalry, which you’d expect, but nothing more.
That chat might help put that one to bed.
Clearly they both want to succeed for their countries and progress but I get the impression that they do get on. Similar with Robbo and Hendo for Scotland and England. I’m sure there is some banter between them but that isn’t going to cause friction when they are on the same team.
I think he’s still in that post-AFCON and the recent bubble. 8 games for Liverpool and Egypt, 1 goal from penalty, zero from open play. Hopefully he rediscovers a bit of form for the end of the season.
I was going to post exactly the same thing. There seem to be a few things weighing heavily on his mind - getting so close to winning AFCON and not agreeing a contract extension/not making a decision that will impact the rest of his career. Of course, there also fatigue - no matter how fit he might be, he’s played too many games with extra time over the course of last three months. I don’t think he was substituted this “frequently” in his entire Liverpool career as in the last couple of months.
He’s not been great since the AFCON. I don’t think what happened there or the contract has anything to do with it. I just think he’s going through those dips in form that all players go through, even the greatest. He had a similar dip in the 18/19 run-in. Couldn’t score or do anything right then scored a worldie at Southampton and suddenly it was business as usual. Trouble with Mo when he’s out of form he will try to do too much. He tries to force things. He was frustrating today. Just taking on too many players. Not even looking up for team mates. This dip won’t last forever but we could do with it ending before the City game.
I think Hendo’s slightly less confident link up play with Joe and Joe’s very differently executed link up play with Mo than Trent was an additional limiting factor on Mo’s potency today. I was actually quite encouraged by his body language as he went off and in shots of him on the bench in the last ten minutes.
Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere but wondering about the impact of Ramadan. Started today and coinciding with such an important month for us. How is it possible for Mo and Mane to train and play games without eating or drinking? My Muslim friends won’t even go for a walk as too tired
As I understand it Islam allows muslims to not fast in certain circumstances, but in return the individual should make a donation (to the local mosque ?) to go towards helping other people to eat. I don’t know if that will be applicable to Mo and Sadio. I know this sort of stuff has been discussed during previous Ramadams I can’t remember though what was the outcome.
