I’m loyal to the club, support the players when I’m in the ground and the rest, well, I want the club to make the right decisions more often than not. I like Keita (even if less so these days), but I don’t want the club to give him a new deal because he doesn’t deserve it enough. Supporting players on forums online has zero influence on them. I was for giving Mo a new deal and I also think he’s going nowhere this summer.
I think @Sportbilly1966 's concern are a fair one. I was in two minds over it myself.
There is a risk with players tailing off rapidly (and that appears to be more likely to happen to players of around Salah’s age than that of Mbappe’s) so you want to avoid situations where if that happens you have committed to paying them a lot of money that then impacts your flexibility to sign other players that you want to bring in. I don’t know if it does in this case, I’m just speaking generally.
I think the plan with Salah is now to have someone like Doak or Gordon come through and take his spot as a gradual process over the next couple of years.
I think maybe a year or so ago we were entertaining switching him out for someone like Saka who we’ve been tracking a long time and if Arsenal hadn’t of stepped up this year may have considered leaving as his contract was up for renewal.
Salah has had a poor season by his standards but so has the team, he is still on course to score 20 goals (a goal tonight does that) so even during his worst spell for us he’s still contributing at a top level.
I think with a refreshed midfield behind him, a funtioning attack again and someone like Doak pushing him for minutes over time we Salah step back up to his old levels.
I’ve been back and forward on selling him in the summer but I struggle to find someone who could come in and contribute what he does.
Mohamed Salah is one goal away from registering 20 in a season in all competitions for the sixth successive campaign with Liverpool.
Salah has another 5-6 years left in him. True, he won’t/can’t be on the top of his game in all those years in PL. But he would still be one of the most lethal strikers in the later years in any league outside England.
I wouldn’t sell Salah this summer. Our forward line is a bit unsettled at the moment. Diaz, Diago are coming back from lengthy injuries, Nunez is still a bit raw, Gakpo is still finding his feet, and above all else, there’s no credible right-sided attacker in our ranks.
Who knows, he’ll probably stay with us until his contract expires in a few years and leave on a free. He’ll have just turned 33 by then and it’ll be interesting to see where he goes, maybe someone like a Barca or Juve would take him on a 1-2 year deal but I’d imagine he’d have to take a significant pay cut…or does he jet off to Arabia and likely earn 2 or even 3x what he’s getting now.
Something tells me he will manage to get that one between now and the end of May …
No point in selling Mo. He’s still fast. Still scores goals and is always available. Why weaken our forward line?
20th goal and about 20 lost balls last night.
So frustrating to watch the way he loses the ball by crashing into opponents or group of opponents. But that’s his game, he has that freedom and as long as he keeps providing numbers, I’m fine.
Yes, got in some dangerous positions and then played some sloppy passes. Very frustrating.
Moutinho using all his strength to push Salah away from Sa at a corner, first by trying to use both his arms, failing, so then using his whole body. Salah has had enough and just does a bump to make Moutinho and Sa fall like ninepins.
Then Salah with the wtf did I just witness face.
Aside from his one-off wonder pass for Gakpo at Newcastle, his passing has been dreadful this season. Probably his biggest flaw in my eyes but it has gone up (down?) a few notches this season. Still, he’s managed to score 20 goals under current circumstances, so I’m quite pleased about that. He’s set the bar so high that commentators are calling such output as weak by his standards, imagine that. Yeah, I wish Nunez and Gakpo scored that little every season.
Plus he hasn’t had any penalties this season, you do have to add that as well (unless he had one in the CL I scrubbed from the mind).
We have not had a penalty in 32 league games.
GCSE Football question:
Liverpool get no penalties because:
a) They don’t spend any time in their opponents’ penalty area
b) Referees are biased
Mohamed Salah is now one of the top 5 scorers for goals in Europe’s top five leagues since the 2017/2018 season. #lfc [sky sports via football daily]
