First and foremost, Mo Salah is a club legend. I knew he was a good player when we signed him, but he far exceeded even the most optimistic expectations. So many goals, assists, wonderful memories. Thank you Mo Salah. I’m glad that the announcement gives some time to come to terms with it, so we can give him the right sort of send off, as is fitting.
His achievements and status are the main thing that need to be talked about, and that’s what will be the topic of conversation for years to come.
Since it’s a football forum and since it’s current news, there are two other aspects that fans are touching on, and I personally think it’s all in bounds to talk about.
First, he has obviously declined as a player. We can all see that. It doesn’t mean he can’t still provide wonderful moments - and what a lovely curled effort it was against Galatasaray - but a new team is emerging. Nobody defeats Old Father Time. More than anything else, I put December’s spat down to that. A proud old lion, defiantly standing his ground. More than understandable.
Depending on your individual age, every person on this forum has legends from yesteryear who helped cement their love affair with LFC. Mo Salah has been that person for this generation, and his profile and achievements have had a global impact on many millions of Liverpool fans.
Second, the terms of the deal is something to touch on. I can understand those who think it is unbecoming, but it is something to discuss, but never as a main thing, given the stature and achievements of the man.
My take is that what has been going on behind the scenes since December has been a to and fro. Mo is on a very high salary, and he is well within his right to stay at Liverpool until the end of the deal, and then move on a Bosman.
The club likely do not see him as a main man for next season, and probably not worth the salary we are paying either. So if we were going to sell, there would be very few takers who would pay much of a fee, plus his wages.
So if the contract is ripped up in the summer I do see a win-win. Mo moves on, he plays on wherever he wants, and he will presumably get a nice signing bonus and a very large salary. On our end the wages are freed up to reinvest, and the new team that is emerging needs a bit more attention in the summer.
All things considered, I’m at peace with this. It is time.
What a hell of a player he has been for us. I would love it if he signed off with some silverware. We’ve been such a shambles this season that that doesn’t look likely, but you never know.
Either way, Mo Salah will get a great send off.
Is right.
