One thing I’d say is that as the car was backing out, it was attacked by people on the street. This is really dumb. If someone thinks they’re under attack, it is an instinct to flee. It’s probably not the smartest thing to back out into a crowd of thousands, but I don’t know if the driver would have accelerated if he thought his safety wasn’t in danger.
We don’t know what incident happened prior to people attacking the car.
If it was the clip I saw, he backs out and hits someone lightly, which was probably accidental. There is then someone remonstrating with him and someone kicks his back window (which was a knobhead thing to do) and he reverses at speed and deliberately knocks them over. I think it went downhill from there.
It’s just too ingrained in everyday life for anyone to think twice about it… which I guess is your point.
Fucking cars. Turn ordinary people into absolute idiots. There is something about being encased in steel that makes people feel like the normal rules of civility don’t apply.
Yesterday in my village, a driver (presumably enraged by the number of temporary traffic lights on the road in) accelerated to 50mph in a 30mph zone, lost control of the vehicle, injured a bunch of people and then ran off.
People behave in cars in ways they never would outside them.
It looks like he reversed because the car in front of him either parked or just stopped due to not being able to get through the crowd. You can see from the clips on tv that not too many were paying attention at that point which could indicate that nothing had happened yet.In reversing he “nudges” someone which then seem to lead to another in the crowd kicking and punching the back of his car.As you say it went downhill from there. At that point there looked to be only 1 guy banging the back of his car,he could have turned off the engine and locked the doors.I get the idea where he might have felt he was in danger but his action put far more people in danger.
They are a cancer on society, indeed. But of course he wasn’t talking about them.
Otherwise it’d be war on motorists and we can’t have that.
Motornormativity, but it’s apparently motorists who are persecuted.
Red or blue, you gotta love this.
The sad part is, it shouldn’t be extraordinary, but the likes of Badenoch are precisely what makes it extraordinary, with their rhetoric and policies.
It’s truly tragic, but it was in no way an accident, I’m sorry to say.
Yes,you can see it happening like that, the lunatic starts bashing the car,the driver panics, then the shit hits the fan, properly, and in turn riles others.
Another thing we have to be wary of is (and I’m saying this not having watched said video), that we might not know what words may have been exchanged between driver and the other people around. The road rage might well have provoked the reaction. Or it was completely unprovoked. We don’t know yet until there’s some solid evidence.
Proud to see so many in the city doing their part to show compassion and help one another. When something bad happens it can go one of two ways. It can bring out the worst or it can bring out the best, and I’m glad people stood tall and showed the latter.
From all the snippets I’ve seen it looks like a case of road rage, perhaps with some fear mixed into the pot, and the fella lost it and ploughed into the crowd. Hopefully the ones in intensive care will stabilize and make a full recovery, and the same goes for everyone else who was injured, too.
It was a great day, and moments like this cannot take away our right to gather and celebrate. Hopefully lessons will be learned about how it might have been prevented, and how the road could have been more secure. It seems when 1M people come together like this, it is probably impossible to keep everything completely safe, especially if someone has bad intent and is determined to do something like what we saw.
It could have been much worse, and I’m thankful for that small mercy at least. Proud, from afar, at the compassion I’ve seen from the people in a very trying situation.

I don’t know if this is even relevant any longer, since so many have now seen the actual driver.
Probably going to get amplified by that Xithole rather than being taken down, no doubt.
Hear Hear. The likes of Kemi are doing everything they can to make this more extraordinary. The only thing I disagree with in the earlier post is quoting that deplorable right wing cancer.
In these situations people are often quick to understand the panic of the driver in finding themselves in a situation where they are blocked by pedestrians and tempers start flaring. Hell, it was the basis of my last post. But I have been in this situation as a pedestrian. It is an entirely normal and justified reaction from the pedestrians to show anger at a car trying to force its way through, even if only creeping inch by inch, though an area where they should not be. I have tried to be conscious of my bias in my response to this incident, but it is not surprising to me that in both of my experiences of these sorts of incidents, the driver has shown zero contrition and angrily demanded people “get out of the fucking road” and that is the prism through which I am interpreting a lot of what I have seen of this incident.
