Yes, Wirtz is the real misfit to our previous shape and tactics.

Wirtz is a good player and watch him thrive. Gordon would have replicated Maca fall down not get a free kick and moan.

As for Trent he wasn’t even a right back in a back four at the end.

There wasn’t inherently nothing much wrong with the summer. Bar Guehi and Diaz (who should have been replaced at the very least). However a lot of the fall out has been down to mass underperformance and frankly I think a big factor is poor training and fitness it’s all I can see and now seems to be talked up by Salah.

It’s the only reason I can see why a team would look so bad. These are not bad players.

I dont know which is worse the Maccy, or the stupid trousers.

IMO I prefer buying a good enough player that fits our system over buying a good player that requires tearing up our previously functional system.

so are Isak, Frimpong, Kerkez.

Only Hugo fits the bill of the type of versatile multifaceted forward we need. And Leoni is the type of defender comfortable on the ball and a good distributor of the ball that we expect.

One thing Rodger did that I fully approve was sending Carroll, Adams and Downing packing.

But then he got Benteke and Balotelli so immediate :-1:

I am not so sure about Leoni who comes from one of the slowest leagues in Europe. We have never seen him facing someone like Doku or Saka or Haaland.

Remember that during Klopp years pace was once a quality required to be a CB at our team.

It was a brilliant debut.

also he was relatively cheap in modern terms.

im more concerned with king’s ransom we’ve spent (for us anyway) on four players who simply dont fit the team or our identity (Isak, Wirtz, Frimpong Kerkez).

I’m not saying they are bad players. They don’t fit this team and they don’t have that bit of blood and thunder that every Red should have in them. Maybe Kerkez but he’s lacking skillwise and low on football IQ

Absolutely, it implied wholesale changes to the manner which we had played for the past 10yrs.

The internal optimism that supported that clearance sale is the real enemy here. And those minds still sit at our board.

there’s more than one way to win league championships, cups, European cups etc. This has been demonstrated time and again by various tactics of different clubs that have won these titles. The key is knowing what the identity of the club is. Liverpool has always been about a bit of heart and emotion a bit of action and movement a bit of excitement in the pass or the skill or the thundering tackle or the shot.
Jürgen understood this. And that’s why he and his teams resonated with us so strongly. Rodgers found that formula inadvertently for one glorious season with the right players. Rafa’s team had it in bursts but his contention with long-term Liverpool fans is that dull bit of control he tried to instill in the team which is why that connection isn’t as strong as it should have been. We are a club that plays football with verve and movement and passing and skill that is allied with passion and commitment and emotion. Otherwise it’s not an LFC football team.
Slot’s idea of football is the antithesis of this, it is clear now, and that’s why he can’t be the manager any more.

So from gladiators to sterile cybermetrists is about right.

Ive had other Prem fans admit (reluctantly) LFC are the coolest club (of that big 4, RM, Barca ManU), because of this authenticity.

I watched last night as Villa took us apart, with a Villa fan, whom at the end, said sorry dude, our clubs have a great relationship, are two of the most respected clubs in the game, but right now, this isnt LFC. :smiling_face_with_tear:

And the irony is that most, if not all of them would seem to be far more suited to the three at the back formation Alonso used at Bayer Leverkusen…

Also I can’t imagine that anyone else would have this train of thought but the only decent thing to happen sports-wise yesterday (at the same time Liverpool were losing to Villa Ulster rugby team conceded a try with three minutes to go which cost them the game and knocked them out of the play off spots) was seeing Austin MacPhee happy and doing well at Villa.

I don’t watch a lot of Villa games but Austin was at Dundee university at the same time as me and when he got a scholarship to university in Wilmington, North Carolina he helped arrange things so our university football team travelled over there for a ‘mini tour’ over the Easter holidays in 2000. So

To be fair I probably would have been less happy for him if I had much hope for us going into the game. As with many others I am just zoned out when we play now. Both the results and the way we play on the pitch has just made me almost numb to the shite we’re seeing on the pitch weekly.
