Always have to bear in mind the effect of playing alongside the best centre in the world.
Having said that, I already think that Gomez walks into any other team in the league, and I struggle to make a case for anyone other that Van Dijk actually being better than him. I think the same might be true of Fabinho.
So I haven’t wavered from my opinion of a year or more ago, that I would play Fabinho at CB in 10 games a season as a purely tactical move regardless of any injuries.

Gomez is our best CB to pair VVD and to get him back to his best form he needs to play. It’s as simple as that for me.

But VVD would struggle playing alongside Maguire.

I think Fabinho excelled in that match and relays some fears of Gomez and Matip were to both spend some time on the sidelines but if Gomez is fit then I would play him.

Gomez and Van Dijk are formidable when Gomez is at his best. In early-mid 18-19 Gomez’ form was incredible. A game that sticks In my mind is the Napoli (A) 1-0 defeat, Gomez was absolutely superb. He’s our quickest defender and allows us to push up and be compact. He hasn’t been at his best for a long time, though, and it has become increasingly more easy to make him make a mistake. Until he starts to play better his place should not be safe, this team is too good for that.
Matip, too, has been extremely good and in big games too. Last years game at Stamford Bridge was an exceptional performance, as was Barca (H) and Tottenham. Doesn’t matter all that much at the moment as he’s never fit.
If Fabinho has more games impressive games back there, and we’re not short in midfield due to injuries, there’s no reason to take him out of the defence. Also worth noting that when Fabinho impressed against Bayern at Anfield he was playing next to Matip, not Van Dijk. The limited evidence so far suggests he is a very good centre back.

Actually , I’d still have Matip/VVD as my first choice pairing. Fabinho’s been brilliant when called upon but Matip is a better ball playing defender than Gomez and Fabinho iI’d still like to see more of him involved higher up
Do we know when Fab is due back…he was watching the game.
