Just want to say @rab is a great poster and because of that, I will make an effort here! If the point is we could, and should, have done better in the game then yes, I agree with that. We still had plenty within our grasp to win it, and we would have done had we been closer to our level. So I can get on board with that general point, but overall I have to give it a massive however…
The game was refereed so unevenly it was a joke. It looked corrupt as you like watching it. Everton could foul us with impunity all game long for barely any punishment. The foul on Konate for their second goal was one such example. Another egregious example was the foul on Salah as he was bearing down on the edge of their box. We were not allowed to compete with them without conceding free kicks for much less than they routinely dished out our way all game long.
Added to that Everton simulated contact several times in the game, and rather than getting booked and seeing a free kick go to Liverpool, they got away with it. The free kick for their first goal was one such example.
My overriding take away is we were robbed, and it was corrupt.
We extended our lead to seven points and we are still in the box seat in the title race.
Here’s the thing. An Evertonian will remember those decisions they feel went against them more than we will and vice versa.
If they’d lost I’d imagine they’d whine about Bradley maybe being lucky not to get a second yellow, or the Konate handball incident or the VAR giving a foul on Konate if they’d ruled out their second. That’s a couple examples but there will be others they will remember and feel annoyed by that wouldn’t even register to us as we’re not the ones getting wound up by it.
End of the day I think we can play better than that despite a poor refereeing performance. If you think that’s the best we can do then fine. But it still doesn’t change the fact we have to defend the free kick he gave far better than we did.
