Post match: Everton v Liverpool (EPL 3/9/22 12.30pm)

I think with new season starting and having to press reset after such an exciting end to the last season… Mane leaving… the injuries at present… with the new players settling… there is bound to be a period of transition both mentally and physically for the guys… These disjointed team selections resulting in stuttering performances are to be, or should be expected… If we get a full squad back together after the world cup and can remain in the hunt until Christmas/New Year, I’m confident Jurgen and his backroom staff will get us Purrrrrrring again in time for the business end of the season

I presume he thinks we can somehow work on it.

So what I keep banging on about is that in his post-match press conference kindly posted by @Livvy above, he mentioned how Salah isn’t playing wider than normal, which is true, since even in previous seasons he would start out wide, before dribbling in or finding the pass to lay the ball off before running in and receiving it again. It’s more that he’s not actually making an effective movement in at the right times, which Jürgen thinks is down to the players not being familiar enough with what he’s trying to convey about their positioning.

Wow, Mo sprinted back to defend the counter attack. It was like he had the jet pack on at full blast.

Salah, Trent, and Elliot are on the same line, like standing on each other’s way. It should have been a triangle with Salah more infield, in between the CB and the FB, and Trent or Elliott out wide to stretch the backline.

Watched it delayed and pretty underwhelmed.

Our build-up play is like watching paint dry.

Thought Nunes coukd have done better with a couple of his headers. We need to adapt to him or him to us asap. Looks so disjointed at the front.
Diaz too often gives the ball away cheaply and seems to get bumped over easily. Would like him to stay on his feet more. Mo, anytime you feel like it, start putting some in the back of the net.

Not sure what the problem is wuth our midfield, apart from the injuries. Fab was okay for the most part, but his lack of pace and slowness of thought when being pressed is a concern for me.

I was really surprised that Ev didn’t try to slow it down a mot more. The fact tgay we were overrun by them in parts of the game shows how far of the pace we are.

honestly dfidnt think we were as bad as everyone is making out.

maybe im getting old or my standards arent as high as everyone else, maybe im just a football tactical luddite, but im not really sure how Everton were on a par with us…they had two really good spells, which didnt last long, where they created a few decent chances, aside from that we probed a bit in the first half with no real threat, but in the second, when the game became more open, we moved the ball well and exploited the wide positions reasonably well.

if we are looking for the perfect Liverpool performance, in my experience, we wont ever find it away at goodison in september…doesnt happen this early in the season.

I think the result, combined with how we did last season, is clouding everyone’s minds.

If we got a 2-0 win here, as we could well have, I don’t think everyone is that bothered.

They werent, but I think at the end of the first half you’d have been happier to have been them. They were content to give us the ball, and the few times they had it they looked more dangerous than we did. That definitely changed in the second half and it ended with their keeper being their best player, but I think sometimes by that point the narrative is often set in, especially when you’re grading on a curve and expecting us to be so much better. However, I wont take much solace of being marginally better than they were because that is still a long way from where we need to be.

Does he like feeling other lads??

re points victory for the Ev at half time and being happier to be them…

…no…no probably not…

id still rather be playing for the team that controlled the ball and therefore the narrative even though we struggled to make much meaningful… but even thats by the by…the general consensus is that we were terrible, are terrible and are tactically deviod of any ideas…the first half away in the derby is exactly that, a first half away in the derby…and all everton have to point to is they ‘tried harder’ than us, i thought the left fullbacks were having plenty of fun, the centrebacks were in control and the striker was in and around the box nicely.

the right side isn’t clicking, but every time i see a comment on TAA its like i’m watching a different game…ill admit hes not anywhere close to the peak of his game, but reading some naratives, you’d think he’s playing like a clown in the circus who steps from one bucket of water into the next then falls into a trampoline and lands on his arse…

IMHO, if it’s not a fitness or mental fatigue issue we have to let him play his way into form because i dont Think hes anywhere as bad as being made out…

Slow it down a bit? If we slow it down any more we will be at walking pace.
I want too see us transition faster up the field with more incisive passes.
When we win the ball, we are happy to keep possession and start knocking it around the back, giving our opposotion time to set up their 2 banks of 4 or similar.

That was poor. Even Everton press more and better than us and we haven’t a clue how to get past a press. We’re mid table until the coaching team can sort something out. If the attack isn’t going to press then a massive rethink is needed, having 2 whippersnappers pressing their goalie doesn’t do anything but open up the midfield to their 5 midfielders for Fabinho (who’s completely lost) to try and controll.
Our players don’t seem to be communicating very much at all.
This is going to be a long season

Exactly, that’s why I thought we like having a relatively small squad. Maybe Klopps preference to stick to the core 11 so much previously, affects the ability for back-ups/rotation players to seamlessly fit in.

The good - Alisson, Gomez, Tmiskas, Diaz and Bobby.

The bad…It must be a tactic to have Salah so far out on the right. But hes not in the game and hasn’t been all season.

Milner - as someone in match thread said thats the kind of performance that was like when Gary Neville retired at half time. It was an absolute car crash of an appearance. It was ao bad we had to make a change and put Gomez there and move Milner into the middle.

The subs…taking TAA and Tsmikas off killed our flow. Not saying TAA didnt need pulling as not great but it came at wrong time.
From that moment we had a 15 minute spell of no midfield (no idea where they went) and we got caught on counter every time.

Jota looked lively but i think Nunez will take some time to settle.
Bobby was fantastic. Diaz always trying. Harsh to take Tsmikas off as he rarely plays 90 mins.

We are missing something. No idea if its due to injured midfielders but we seem to look a bit erratic.

We didnt replace the midfield this summer as 3 or 4 needed moving on and we could pay the price for that.

It might be that my calibration for what constitutes a good goalkeeping performances has been skewed by watching Alisson Becker for five years. What I see in a lot of English keepers - Pickford is one, Pope another, also Ramsdale - is a tendency to make the kind save that Alison Becker makes as routine, look absolutely world class. I see these guys flinging themselves across the goal to the gasps of whoever is on the punditry, whereas Alisson just gathers it without any fuss become he’s already done the hard work with his anticipation and footwork.

I agree with you that Liverpool would have won three nil but for him, but at the same time I don’t think it was anywhere near the goalkeeping performance BT were wanking over. A better keeper just makes those saves look ordinary.

Disappointed, really thought we would jag this one,but the amble across to Goodison is not always the literal walk in the park.
Several players seem to be off the pace at the minute Salah for one,Nunez did OK given he is new and just had a 3 game rest.Milly, really think his legs are letting his heart and head down a bit, happens to all of us.
It is clear however,if we want to be up near the top,we need to get moving soon.
As more players come back from injury it will happen, but the injury rate needs to slow down too.

Just remain calm people.

I know we now have what 9 points out of 18 possible, but it’s early days.

We’re only 5 points behind City, and does anyone really believe that Arsenal can keep up this torrid pacing?
