Post match: Fulham v's Liverpool (PL Matchday 01 06/08/2022 12:30 : 2-2

Poor from our lads today, particularly the first half.
Not going to whinge about the ref, today, the kind of tripe we served up probably didn’t deserve 3 points, anyway.
We did miss Mane, but I reckon Darwin will fill that hole, did well once he came on.
Dunno where Bobby was,on a beach in Brazil?
Milly helped hold it together, yet again.
Still only the first game of the season, but we can’t do what we did last year, drawing games we should have won.

He WAS fouled. It was like the Southampton away goal all over again

Point gained. Fulham deserved to win and they outworked us for large parts of the game.
Some may complain about a foul on hendo but that doesn’t excuse what happened thereafter. Trent reminded me of Glen Johnson, when Johnson had a poor game you could tell quite early with a poor touch here and there, we would struggle and not get the win.
Not saying lets all blame trent! just saying it was a clear sign of what was to come in the game.

Mitrovic 10/10.

City lost its first game last season and ended up winning the title. No need to draw any significant conclusions from matchweek 1. Hopefully, Thiago isn’t out for too long.

If I was Crystal Palace, I’d be worried about going into Anfield to play a team as motivated as we will be.

I see this trotted out time and again on here and elsewhere and it never ceases to amaze me.

That somehow, because we played poorly, the fact the referee/VAR has shafted us doesn’t matter.

It doesn’t matter how shite we were, the minimum we should be able to expect is the fucking officials are impartial and do their jobs properly. It’s absolutely bizarre.

Another joke as the referee allowed everything Fullham did in the first 30 minutes and gave a penalty for that … the FA/PL will be pleased with him.

As others have already stated, the penalty situation should never have arisen: Henderson was clearly fouled in the build-up.

Week one of a new season and we’re already being shafted by the refs.

Wasn’t Henderson fouled in the build up to the first goal?

Yeah; my bad. The first goal was the one where Hendo was fouled.

Fulham should have won??? Should they fuck both their goals were iffy to say the least, we scored 2 good goals hit the woodwork 3 times and had a goal disallowed.

even Klopp has mentioned the foul on Henderson was too long before the goal to be relevant to a VAR review.

as a foul im comfortable to say its one of those ones that easily missed, bias or no bias.

the hands on trents back were a bit off to me, not sure how that doesnt even get a review at the least, the bigger one for me was Tetes yellow…couldve been a red…seen them given…was a really nasty tackle.

acknowledging those moments though, i still would rather focus on our own failings, becuase they were so blatant…so many things wrong everywhere over the pitch.

i think thats what Hugo was refering to when he said hes not going to complain about the ref…its not as free pass …its just an acknowledgement that we needed to be alot better

I promised myself that I wouldn’t ever comment in the in match thread, and made a cardinal error by doing so yesterday.
I was so annoyed by the penalty decision that I made a comment about Atwell and his bias. My comment on people being blind to this was a general comment, not aimed at anyone but I accept the reaction it got. I was told that I need help. Maybe so, but there is worse said in in match threads, but fair enough. I am in a minority group that thinks bias exists from the likes of Atwell and my contention was that this was very evident yesterday. Hence the blind comment which wasn’t meant to cause offence. Genuinely made as a comment, on a Liverpool forum. About a dreadful decision that potentially shapes our season. Its that tight.

There was always going to be comment on the penalty incident in this thread and to be told to shut the fuck up before the discussion developed annoyed me and I responded by telling the poster to go fuck himself. Terse words, that developed further with posts on both sides of the exchange being deleted.

Well, its a forum and I can’t shut the fuck up. There are mods in disagreement over the penalty and thats how discussion should be, with all views observed.

Regarding the match…
Liverpool were poor yesterday, extremely poor.
TAA, Hendo, Bobby, Fabinho, Robbo were dreadful. But we were in the match despite poor decisions.
Hendo was fouled prior to their first goal. Similar to Origi being fouled vs Utd leading to a goal a few seasons back.
The goal should be disallowed. TAA defends poorly and they get the lead, but thats not really the point.
The substitutions changed the game.
At 1-1 we are going to win the match. I was confident that this was 3 points.

The penalty decision is awful. I looked again last night, Madely is cowardly by blowing, as he is afraid he will be proven wrong, so he trusts VAR. Atwell, with previous form does exactly as expected. He should have sent Madely to the screen where it was evident that the contact was not sufficient for it to be called a foul. Its that simple.
And whilst I may be accused of double standards, I will 100% admit if Mo got a similar decision to win the match I would be fucking delighted. Because I don’t care how Liverpool win, if they win. Mo could get ten such decisions and it won’t equate to the decisions against us over the last four or five seasons.

I am 100% convinced that Atwell and his fucking bias cost us points yesterday. Agree or disagree, fair enough.
But trust me…I don’t need help …though I do appreciate the concern of @WeeJoe at the time.

I think Klopp is wrong then. The incident was in the build up to the goal and was no different to the foul on Origi at OT a few seasons ago when Rashford scored.

Haven’t seen the match, only the goals and they only showed the last second or so. No real context to them and editted to look like perfectly good goals so I can’t comment.

So I’ll take 2 small positives from yesterday.

  1. wake up call. No room for complacency. I hope that is done for the season now

  2. Nunez scored. No matter the performance of him or the team for a striker to get another goal can only be a good thing. Confidence building, integrating better with the team etc.

Also nice to have an out and out striker / 9 again I think or I should say someone who will score from 6 yards out regularly. He seems to drive into that area more than others in the squad have under Klopp. That’s based on the very little I’ve seen of him up to now

Liverpool fc always cheated never defeated!

We are on dangerous ground here,
blaming the officials rather than our poor performance for any poor result.

Don’t think the two are exclusive to be honest.
Liverpool were poor yesterday, really poor.
But the decisions, particularly the penalty shaped the outcome of the match.

If the penalty was incorrectly awarded, then the decision cost us two points. I have looked at the footage a few times and I can’t see why it is given.

Penalty or no penalty, we let Mitrovic lumber into the box by not being good enough. If we actually pressed properly, closed down the passing lanes and stop passing it straight to then… We stop it being a decision needing to be taken.

We weren’t good enough all over the park, much improvement needed by some of our superstars on the very basics.

Mitrovic is the first player to dribble past Van Dijk and win a penalty off him in a single match. Van Dijk was poor, it’s a lazy leg left out after being wrong footed by an absolute clogger. Very very soft penalty but don’t give them the chance of one.

Yes we do. First half reminded me of the Villareal game in the second leg of the CL semi. We looked half asleep that night as well but I think it was more down to us not being prepared for such an aggressive and high press. Fulham did something similar. We couldn’t get out easily and that wasn’t just down to the midfield. Our other option in that situation is the long pass from defence but both Trent and Virgil’s radars were way off yesterday.

The good thing about that approach from our point of view is that teams can’t keep it for the full 90 and Fulham tired eventually. We were right on top at 1-1 which is why the penalty was so annoying. Poor pass from Matip and clumsy defending from Virgil. That 20 seconds or so summed up our overall performance. I expected us to be fully focused and on it from minute one given how important it is not to drop points against teams like Fulham. It was the general sloppiness that was the most worrying thing for me.

My biggest point of being pissed off was after the shit show of the first 45 minutes we came out 2nd half and managed to be worse. That was a horrible attitude, glad Klopp called them out on it.

The game changed when Nuñez came on. He occupied both their CBs and caused mayhem, which is exactly what we need from him. All of a sudden Salah had space to work and was able to ping some deadly crosses into the box. Thought Elliott was great as well, gave them something else to think about. On another day we could have won 4-2, and on yet another we could have lost 4-2. Fulham we’re right up for that and we let them dictate large portions of the match, which Klopp acknowledged and I have no doubt will get sorted out.
