no. they are both fouls. One was given one wasn’t but for people to pick out those two incidents need to re watch the match as there were several incidents that were fouls and not given for both teams.
“Who’s the scouser in the black?” was quite a dominant chant in the first half iirc.
One of the reasons i see us get so much stick from fans of other teams is because on social media / radio phone ins we are represented by people unwilling and unable to accept when a decisions goes against us.
We weren’t cheated we just played poorly and escaped with a point.
Fulham were doing the old (legitimate) trick of having a bite at our players (eg Diaz), then when we return the favour, they would collapse to the floor (contrast that with how Thiago and Diaz used their strength to keep the ball despite being fouled, where the ref would acknowledge the foul but wave play on as they kept the ball).
In other words, they exploited the refereeing style to perfection. It’s one area that under Klopp, we will not do, as Klopp likes a fair pure playing style.
So that’s why in a game where the ref is trying to let things flow, a foul according to the home fans not given (where the player exaggerates the contact) is magnified to all watching that some sort of injustice has been served.
The icing on the cake was Bobby Decordova-Reid, who dived with no contact to win a free kick. He stood up with a smirk on his face. So the ref did well in some situations, but in others, he bought their shithousery.
We need a bit of that at times. It would be the difference in making these draws into wins.
Disappointing performance and result yesterday. Ref was as poor as some of our players. None of our rivals for top 4 would have a penalty against them for that yesterday, Madley just couldn’t blow the whistle quick enough.
Bobby way off The pace Fabinho looked like a 40 year old and can’t cope when pressed and Trent forgot how to defend again.
That is not how VAR works. The screens are explicitly not for the ref to just get another a look at a decision they are not sure about. They are only to be used for the review an incident the VAR has told them they have objectively got wrong (“clear and obvious” should be better understood as “objectively wrong”).
Yep, understanding that VAR doesnt exist to second guess a ref’s judgement call, an incident where the ref sees contact and decides it was sufficient to call a foul leaves very little room for VAR to intervene. What is being debated is he subjective interpretation of how consequential the contact was and VAR has no role in that.
It’s one of my biggest concerns about Klopp - the fairness thing re refs is very much the difference between perennial winning and finishing runner up. Love the man but I wish he’d become more pragmatic about this
And Paul Tierney waves play on in today’s match at Old Trafford when Martinez (already on a yellow for a take one for the team foul to stop a break on goal) absolutely flattens Welback in the penalty area. Steamrolls him.
Nothing to see here. Move along now. Every team is treated equally.
Really? Thought he was okay, but not great at all. Tripped over a stray blade of grass and an air shot within minutes of coming on and didn’t get much better from then on. Some good link up play but nothing amazing to write home about, personally.
Nunez changed the game. I commented in the match thread that Bobby was pulling out of every header and the centre half’s had a handy game against him and that then allowed close attention to Mo which made it hard for him.
Darwin game on and he had such a jump for the first two balls against their 6,5 center half. He actually didn’t win any of them but the mid air contact and physicality that ensued allowed for the two centre backs worry about him compared to Bobby which allowed Mo a 1 on 1 with their left back. Hence we scored two.
Objectively the decision(s) was wrong, hence he should have been sent to the screen. It was indeed clear and obviously wrong. Your point really underpins my view that Atwell isn’t objective in his assessment.
And I am trusting your view on what VAR is and isn’t,.
Edit:
Have just seen Wellbeck penalty claim vs Utd.
VAR, great idea but an absolute shambes in operation. VVD feather touch on Mitrovic vs Wellbeck getting a full on body check?
Interesting to see a few people who think it was Fulham tiring that was the catalyst for us creating chances rather than the changes.
I don’t agree. Of course they tired, but we started creating the moment Elliot and Nunez came on. The primary reason IMO was Nunez’ movement, it was totally at odds with what Firmino was doing. That space was there all game, we just didn’t exploit it in the first half. The graphic below shows the difference between the two players.
I loved that Elliot made a mistake, dusted himself off and then contributed to the game. Sign of a really determined lad. Fair dues to him.
Him and Nunez must start against Palace.
Why are Diaz and Firmino basically touching eachother? No wonder the midfield was congested…
Hendo completed 69% of passes, jesus thats bad! When he went to no.6 he was far better… I really hope he steps up but the last 2 games he’s been a huge problem for us… Add to that Fabinho seems to have his diving boots back on our midfield was worse than poor. 100% Elliot changed the game alongside Nunez.
