Looking at TAA’s position, he is playing as an inverted RB but has the ability to do a typical overlapping RB if the opposition sits back and soak. To which I want to give a new term for a player like that, the “Complete Wingback”
Forget about the weird " Right Midfield Back". He is just playing deeper this time round which gives him another dimension in attack.
Go gung ho on us, TAA will get the space to overlap. Sit back on us, TAA gets the freedom to go narrower and ping passes.
Trent had an unbelievable game today. His position isn’t necessarily new — I remember hearing talk about “false RB” with Kimmich a while ago. It is strikingly effective though.
He reminds me a bit of Stevie when in midfield tbh. He isn’t going to silkily dribble past players, but he is superb at the pass and move. Every time he gave the ball up, he immediately moved to get open. His physicality matched with his tactical awareness meant he was usually also moving into the right spaces. Lovely to see.
I also 100% agree with some others that many of our defending and midfield issues start with the counter press up front. I think we will see a lot of improvement next season when Darwin, Gakpo and others gel. We’ve already started to see it in the last game and a half.
Listening to Steve Hunter on commentary last night… (this is the same guy, that has commentated on the LFC youth games as well for years), he was saying that the role TAA played last night, is the exact same role, Pep Lijnders had him playing, before TAA broke into the first team when Clyne got injured - it was one of the first things he did apparently, when he was organising the youngsters
The result was nice but I’m genuinely pleased with the performance there. I’m not sure if it was us being good or Leeds being crap. I suspect a little of both.
This seems to be a W-M formation of some variety but the performances of both Trent and Salah were amongst the best of the season. Both of them were able to concentrate on what they are good at.
Seeing Robertson as effectively the left part of a back 3 is unusual. With Scotland he plays more as a traditional wing-back with Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney in that left-back-3 position; however, I thought Robertson looked comfortable there and he was still able to whip in crosses going forward.
How this affects what we need to bring in during the summer is another matter. We clearly need more in midfield. Jones did well yesterday but there is far too much deadwood in the squad to rely on him or his injury record. I’m hoping he pushes on but he needs support. Another centre back would seem to be a priority as I think Matip is looking more marginalised and VVD is not getting younger or Gomez fitter.
It did hit his hand and yes, they are given often times but it just feels a bit of a pointed way of saying it. Rather than pad it out with, VAR decisions have been controversial of late and this falls somewhat into that… it is a clear he did it intentionally and LFC got away with it again… maybe too sensitive - maybe. However, he was very close to the ball, it was blasted at him, his arm was close to his body and there was no obvious move of his hand towards the ball… also it was in the middle third. Had it been in the final third, I think it would be given.
Imagine if that was a winning goal against us… I would have been furious and there would have been a meltdown on here.
It looked to me, admittedly in slow mo, that he moved his elbow out from his body (a reflex action no doubt) and I don’t think there would have been any moans if it had not been given.
Even if a goal hadn’t resulted from that point, it should have been blown as a handball.
I was surprised that it wasn’t given as handball given that it deflected the ball to our player and directly led to the goal. I think by the rules (intention, body shape, and distance) it wasn’t technically a handball offence but it was pretty marginal.
Then again, I’ve seen far more blatant ones not given to us.
I realise your tongue is firmly planted in cheek here, but I just want to explore this a bit further.
The absolute max we can get now is 72 points. We would have to be flawless from here until the end of the season. No slip ups against Spurs (at home at least) or away at West Ham which we’ve had a couple of slip ups at over the years. But its not out of the question that we could get max points from now given we play our most difficult opponents at home (Spurs, Brentford and Villa) and teams that may already be relegated at that point, away.
But aside from us, we would need to be handed a gargantuan favour from Newcastle. It would require them to get 3 L’s from their remaining 8 matches leaving it up to GD which we should pinch if we win all our remaining matches. I look at their matches and I just don’t see that happening. By god apart from City its the team I’d love to see choke at the last second more than anyone else. But its tough trying to convince myself it can happen. ‘We are Liverpool and anything can happen’ is what we’d usually tell ourselves but I think we’ve left this one far too late.
I will be over the moon if we build on our form and snatch maybe 5th. That would be an achievement.
