Fify.
And our form of late has affected our results in other tournaments and not in the league.
As far as the other tournaments go , we got a rough draw against PSG in the champions league. Nearly got through but in the end. It didnāt happen.
Went to the finals of the league Cup and were outplayed by a Newcastle side which wanted it more than us. Again , that league Cup run didnāt affect our league form.
The FA cup loss against Plymouth is an outlier. But given the team bench strength and the fact that we had to play 5 games in 15 days. We were pragmatic enough to be willing to sacrifice one cup. Are we as Liverpool fans happy with that ? No ofcourse not. But we went for the quadruple in the not so recent past and ended up running out of steam in the business end of the league. Itās a case of priorities and the team mgmt chose what they felt was a prudent way out. Still , the selected team didnāt have any business to lose to a team facing relegation from the championship.
Controlled the game⦠had damn near 30 shots on goal⦠played some really silky 1 touch through them at will.
Yeah, 1 goal from that many chances is a concern gong forward (as in how to lift the trophy again next year) and i think we all kind of knew when Mo hit both posts with his first chance it was going to be one of those days in front of goal. Gave them a couple to good a look chances given the lack of quality and ambition they showed as well, but Iām putting my feet up, pouring a dram, and quietly starting to celebrate a title so I just canāt be bothered. We can stress about these things over the summer while we worry about winning the transfer window with a nice big shiny new TROPHY in the cabinet.
Yeah, Iām just not understanding anyone calling that performance ādireā.
Apart from Konate doing some absolutely silly stuff like the unnecessary conceded corner, we were defensively very solid. Attacking wise, we had some absolutely gilt-edged chances throughout the match.
I know some get upset when we as fans repeat how āon any other day, that would be 5 or 6ā. I would dial that phrase back a bit since we are consistently missing some pretty easy opportunities over multiple games, and say the correct term is 'we should have had 5 or 6 if we were just a touch better in our split decision making.
The biggest two chances that come to mind are Salah attempting to kick on the right far post instead of heading it, and Jota failing a simple header on the left far post. Both werenāt even on target. Funny thing is I think if the players were swapped in those chances we probably would have had two quality shots on goal, with the only deciding factor being if the keeper was up to it. Jota we know is very skillful with those low headers and often makes the correct choice on whether itās headed or kicked, whereas Salah often makes the wrong choice in those difficult height chances.
Another chance that I wasnāt exactly happy with was Gakpo going along the ground and being blocked by the defender when he had the keeper out of the picture for his chance. Going aerially in any way there and being on target and itās almost certainly a goal. Sure, itās slightly higher risk, but I think Gakpo easily had the class to finish that.
So Iām happy enough with the performance even if we didnāt make good split second choices which could have made the match more comfortable. But when you are 3 points from the title, any method to win is ok by me.
Edit: thinking back on it, I may be unfair on Jota in that instance as I vaguely recall the defender got a slight touch making the header difficult.
āI love whiningā - Most of TAN.
Weāre at the stage of the season where relegation candidates up their game to a level that if theyād displayed more often, wouldnāt be relegation candidates in the first place.
Dominating them, never looking like conceding, then snatching a winner works fine for me.
Putting up with piss takes, and reading media reports creaming themselves over those manc cunts being top of the league title pile for years are about to become obsolete, so right now I couldnāt give a flying fuck about performances.
Weāll win this title, witness proper celebrations, then re-set in the summer to go after number 21.
Excitement is a nice plus but itās not a prerequisite of successful football and the lack of is not what is concerning to me.
My opinion is that the performances have been dropping since the turn of the year. I donāt think that there are more than 5 games since then that have really stood out. The worry is that our true level is closer to what weāve seen recently rather than the first part of the season.
Yes, the football yesterday wasnāt exciting under any stretch of imagination, but I would take it 10 times out of 10 compared to the second half against West Ham and the first against Southampton. Obviously, picking up results despite mediocre showings is always nice, but itās only a matter of time before they start matching the performances.
As for the tension and pressure under which the players find themselves in, itās part and parcel of playing for LFC and I donāt think that theyāve been a major factor in recent performances. If that were the case and they canāt perform when they are 13 points ahead, what would happen if they were neck and neck with another team?
We wouldnāt know until next season about that. Hence, at least personally would want to cross the bridge when it comes. Maybe weāll falter; maybe the team performs better when itāll be close competition like it was till we went out of sight like this season, who knows?
I think youāll have to figure that Slot would be in quite a lot of pressure here too. And hence heās choosing to be pragmatic and not mess things up
No one expected his team to win the league (at the beginning anyway) , that allowed him a lot more freedom and that showed in the football that our team player.
As we got closer and closer to winning the title, slot probably wanted to play it safer (mainly to avoid any further injuries but also to mitigate player burn out)
I think weāll find that once this title is done with and Slot gets players that he trusts in and is willing to give more minutes too , we will not go into this safety mode this early.
and half the squad were coming back from Covid
This team has strolled to the league but it can massively be improved and needs to beā¦For me we still have issues in the middle - Mac has been consistent and Grav as well for the large part (dipped a bit after xmas) but its whoever else has come in hasnāt been consistent- Jones and Sozbo have 1 or 2 good games and then 1 or 2 poor games. Elliot isnt fancied and neither is Endo.
i think we need a proper (and im gonna down with the kids hereā¦) baller in the middle.
up top as well Nunez and Jota need to be replaced. Gakpo been poor since he came back from injury. Salah not been as great as late but his first 6 months won us the league. Diaz also has played reallly well.
Full backs - we need a top LB, let Tsmikas go and Robbo be back up.
Mostly agree with you.
If we are being ruthless , I would send Robbo out and keep Tsimikas as backup.
But itās not something that will happen.
We have shed too many tears over the years for being pipped to the post, where we were the better team. I donāt mind how poor the team played, this team worked damned hard to get this far. I never ever dreamed we would be within touching distance to that shiny trophy this season.
I am just going to enjoy this week. Next weekend, I am going to savour every moment and jump up and down, go mad with joy, get some cakes and celebrate this season with loved ones. Life is too short, who knows how long we have left in this world. Just embrace this title. We can talk about next season in August.
I am so proud of our boys and manager.
If the team was grinding out results and staying in the title race pre Christmas we would be happy with an improvement second half of the season. Better finishing and overall performance in the second half resulting in winning the league. No one would be complainingā¦
We got it the other way around. We won the league through early to mid season performances and then tapered off. Not to losing matches, just to less intense performances.
The end result is the same, we win the fucking league.
All the talk of improving, buying and selling players could and should be shelved until June. Assessment of the season, not a half dozen games.
I hope Arsenal draw on Wednesday, then we will win No 20 on Sunday. These are good times.
It was like watching a bunch of Nunezā.
Even if Arsenal win on Wednesday, a victory for us on Sunday seals it. We just have to match (or exceed) their result.
I know that!
A draw takes pressure off and makes winning the league next Sunday a more achievable goal.
Weād win it regardless of the arsenal draw/win on Sunday.
Itās only Arsenal losing that would guarantee the league before.
Read the comment aboveā¦
I want us to get the league at the earliest possible time.
The sooner done , the better
