Post Match: Liverpool v AC Milan (UCL 15/9/21 8pm)

Milner yes, Hendo no. Our captain is really not a good penalty taker.

1 miss in 18 suggests there is nothing wrong with Mo continuing to take penalties

Jesus christ some people need a reality check at times, Mo has missed 1 penalty in 18 - I’d kill for that sort of return.

Or would people be happy to replace Mo with someone like me that would be lucky to score 1 in 18?

Might add an element of fun if they picked a random person from the crowd to take penalties for the team.

Score and you get to sit in the dugout, miss and you have to go back to your seat.

PSG - was at that game. What a moment.

back line lost their shape on both. Leao and Rebic overlapped on the first and their respective marks (Matip and Trent) completely checked out, didn’t follow them. then they did it again on the second and Matip was caught in no-man’s land.

Twice they overloaded the right side and twice they were rewarded.

Coaching staff needs to go to school on this.

Matip didn’t have any urgency about him at all for the second, was moving very slowly like a constipated broom, very dissappointing. No indication of injury either after the match so no idea what that was about.

when you start messing about with CB pairings, these kind of communication breakdowns can happen. Virgil runs the back line, Matip and Gomez are passive. Trent is passive. An effective back line always has someone who sees the play and is constantly talking to the other players.

a simple weave like what Milan did twice is enough to create an overload. Matip has to make a decision between the ball carrier or the runner, and 95% of the time the defender will lose in a 2-on-1

I can not disagree with you except for the 95% figure (there’s still the goalie) then again that seems to be our case if it doesn’t involve VVD.

What I don’t understand is what that has to do with Matip chugging along at a snails pace looking like a constipated broom (or at least it handle) or someone in the middle of having a big dump. Surely he should besprinting to cover that central area as Gomez has come over and Alisson has commited.
In anycase when ever this happens to us our defense looks far too ‘spread out’ and Trent is out of the picture. W ejust don’t pick up the men or their movement. So yes work is needed however some urgence might also help out in the outcome.

Matip’s never been the most agile of defenders, and Trent has to foray so far forward at times that when he gets caught out, he’s miles away from being any help.

Don’t know where else to put this. This is so wonderful! The stories he’ll have to tell, he would have seen so much ups and down. Just wow!

As per one of the comments, he would have seen us win all but 4 trophies.

Watch Matip from 5;16 that’s just pathetic!
I don’t really care about the rest, It’s just an instant but that isn’t anything to do with a lack of agility, there’s something else. Just a wtf moment.

that’s awesome! I saw a picture from friends we stayed with in Whaley Bridge, who was going to be my source for my matchday ticket in 2019 before I lucked out. Their oldest son was at the match yesterday, pitchside courtesy of one of their friends who works for the club.

Now wait a minute, what about buses, midweek and ticket prices, eh??? Oh wait, it’s YNWA

Some mad shouts in here. Matip should have done this, should have done that, Alisson at fault for the first goal, Jota anonymous…I must have been watching a different game.
Matip was outstanding. How easy it is to isolate split seconds of match action to dig someone out for not being 2 yards to the right etc. Alisson had no chance with the goal, the bloke hit it hard and low from 8 fucking yards. Jota had a decent game, linking play and got into a couple of good goalscoring positions.
The whole team were at it from the first minute. Playing against a Liverpool side in that mood must be fucking terrifying, Milan were shell-shocked and had no answer to it. That they led 2-1 at HT is bordering on bizarre and unfortunately for us it was yet another example of our profligacy in front of goal…if this team could learn to convert a ‘normal’ percentage of chances created it would be literally unbeatable.
Milan were as bad as any European side I’ve seen at Anfield in years and that includes the likes of Maribor and Spartak Moscow. The gulf in class was huge. I’d be amazed if they finish anywhere other than bottom of the group. Credit to them though, they didn’t resort to play-acting, general shithousery etc and looked to get on with the game even when they were being torn to pieces in the first half hour.
Matip, Fabinho and Salah my picks for MOTM, thought Trent was very erratic and Divock struggled to fit in despite looking interested for a change. Loved Milner’s late cameo, can see Atletico putting in a cheeky bid in January.

I know it’s natural to focus on our team, but sometimes you have to accept that mistakes can happen because some outstanding football from the opposition force them.

We rarely analyse our goals from the perspective of the mistakes the opposition have made.

I thought he was really good for thirty minutes, tired before the break, had a good 45-55 (including the wonderful assist) and then was cooked.

That’s probably as much to do with him not playing any meaningful footy for a year as it it any natural Divness.

He showed enough to suggest that with a bit of game time, he can be of use this season.

If that isn’t the title of his autobiography, I’m going to be very disappointed.

I really think Origi has run his race, time up now.
He added nothing on Wednesday and its just great memories and kindness that keep him from being slaughtered.

Cramp at that stage of the match? Seriously, no athlete should be cramping after an hour.

Except for, you know, a rather good assist for Mo’s goal.
