Post Match: Liverpool v Arsenal (ELC 13/1/22 7.45pm)

Imagine if the manager based his post-match comments on a similar reading of the game after the 24th minute as you appear to have…

I was there in the Kop tonight and it wasn’t pretty watching. Everything was off about this game. From being outsung for 85 of the 90 minutes ( it’s Arsenal’s cup final) to the players looking devoid of confidence. The crowd was also onto every mistake but tbf the players were so fucking poor.

I’m sick of January. I can’t think of a good one we’ve had. We seem to always hit our rut in them.

Henderson needs to forget about the Hollywood goal he is always going for with the ball coming onto him. I’m sure he’s pulled it off once before but it’s a total waste.

I’m not a fan of his but apart from that ridiculous overhead kick with no pressure when he first came on, I thought Neco wasnt the worst in the limited minutes he had. He’s still terribly one dimensional but at least he ran into space which is more than can be said of many of his teammates.

Square left, pause, square right, pause, square left…rinse and repeat. No confidence. No ideas.

I think I’ll leave any comments about this game until tomorrow, in case I post something stupid. Goodnight all.

Watching the match on tv it looked like Arsenal were well drilled in defending a 10 men situation. We have seen this before with Liverpool, but usually against lesser teams with 11 men. Arsenal simply reverted to survival mode for 60 minutes. We weren’t able to break them down. .

I actually think the match would have been tailor made for Salah. A speedy player with excellent ball control is exactly what we needed to run at the Arsenal defence. You could see AOC try that toward the end. Jota I find is a fucking terrible dribbler, and Bobby has very little pace, as does Minamino.

A speedy player against a team that’s playing a deep as nuclear sub in the Atlantic.

There were plenty of opportunities, but we moved it so slow.

When we made a quick transition forward it was a player isolated wide without any support in the middle. So said player would hold it up until the forwards got down. It’s easy to defend when you have the numbers like Arsenal did. With one less player. Because we were so slow we gave the defenders time.

True. My point was more that we don’t lack quality midfielders. The availability of those players is a different issue.

I think the ref f*cked us over. Paul Tierney or Anthony Taylor would never send Xhaka off for that challenge

Of course, you are right but for me, it was over 2 weeks ago, Cheaty has a too strong squad to fuck up and we knew that we could not cope without our African boys without a miracle.

Weren’t you whinging that we’d never win anything in the match thread? Imagine if Klopp had as little faith in his players, most of whom have won major trophies with us, as you do…

See how easy it is to be asinine

Comes back to the issue with squad depth. Ours isn’t bad, but when you compare to the top teams it’s relatively parsimonious. Milner and Henderson aging as well doesn’t help. Under these circumstances I think the lads are putting in a decent shift.

Oh you are right it is about the squad dept, ours is not good enough to compete for the PL title in years where the AFCON is played in winter.

I noticed that tonight.
He does well to to get out of a tight space then just when the ball needs to be played he takes another un-needed touch and the pass on has gone.

Did it about 5 times tonight. Just needs to release the ball a bit quicker.

Fsg need to invest in this squad. It needs a shake up and we aren’t improving. I think this squad has run it course come the end of the season.

That midfield tonight was really poor. Then you have…
Thiago - injured
Ox - not in favour and inconsistent
Nabby - away and will probably come back injured!!

I’d like them all moved on and players who are built for a near 70 game season come in.

Jude Bellingham would be a start.

I’d like some investment in the team, but until the new stand takes off, it’s probably not going to happen. That shows how good Klopp is.

Listened to it so can’t really comment but on the plus side it’s only half time and we have the advantage of playing against 11 in the second half

Fsg are lucky Klopp has got this team to perform miracles for relatively cheap.

But now parts need replacing.

Milner, Ox and Keita out. Bellingham or Tchoumeni in. Leaving six main midfielders, an older group: Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago; and a younger group: Bellingham/Tchoumeni, Jones, Elliot. Then the likes of Morton coming through to nab minutes here and there.

The strikers need a reshuffle too. Origi and Minamino need to go. If Mo signs a new deal I think Mané is vulnerable to a sale, and then I’d like to see Nkunku (who can also play deeper to bolster the midfield) and one of David/Adeyemi, someone of that sort of profile.

It’s all very doable. Meanwhile, we are gonna have to be patient and dig deep for January, unless one of our longer term targets becomes available.

Tonight was flat as you like. I can’t get overly worked up as we struggle to break down packed defences, organized and down to ten men. That’s without factoring in the absence of Mo and Sadio, plus a lack of rhythm and some covid legs on a few of them.

We will be alright.

Bellingham, relatively unproven youngster (see Jadon Sancho) in.
Thiago, our best midfielder out.

Great plan.
