I wish the European match referees could coach/teach EPL referees on how to referee games fairly

My take on it is that it was orange. I was initially bemused at the red card, but on closer look it’s a bit worse than it looked in real time.

Definitely a yellow. But it’s also two nasty, snide stamps down Mane’s Achilles. If you want to stop him and take a yellow, there are other ways to do it. It’s not just looking to stop a break, it’s also looking to either hurt or provoke Mane.

So somewhere in between a yellow and a red.

Now, it’s in the hands of the player. The referee is probably willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and show a yellow. But, as we can see he completely blanks the ref and walks away. It takes him three whistles to get him to turn around. And the player still won’t come to the referee.

So at that point, I think the referee thinks ‘Fuck it. You’re having a red’. And quite right too.

I’ll admit I thought it was an ankle tap at the time and not a good rake down the achilles etc. hence my thoughts yellow. I say yellow because that has pretty much been the standard punishment for an ankle tap designed to stop a dangerous situation developing. If there’s a push to get on top of that kind of thing fine, I welcome it although I can see us losing Milner from time to time.

Shame we dont get to see the referees report on stuff like this. I think it would help everyone to see / understand their thinking. It would certainly add transparency

If you kick a player without the ball you are sent off and therefore, if you kick a player without the ball and have no intent to play the ball, you should sent off, seems simple to me.

Completely agree. We are not getting bullied. And we will never go to the dark side under Jurgen. And I definitely don’t want that either.

If you ask Mrs CDO, I’m probably the biggest critic of referees anywhere. Even if we’ve won comfortably I’ll often slate a ref for missing something or given a wrong decision. And not just decisions that go against us. I’ll point it out to her when we get a wrong decision in our favour.
I thought that the ref last night got it ‘mostly’ right. He wasn’t taking any messing from either team and rightly waved play on when a couple of our lads were going down too easily. As for the red card, I thought at the time of the incident the ref upgraded the card that he was going to give. But on the radio news this morning the presenter said that UEFA had confirmed the ref was always giving a Red for dangerous play.

Early in the game the ref did not give us anything, Mane had been fouled three times and nothing given only ref gesturing at Mane to get up after being kicked on the ankle, when he rightly flashed the red I was a bit shocked, he finally started to do what he should have from the start.
All our players played really well even Chamberlain the only bad news was Bobby picking up a injury.

Absolutely. If you prioritise the league please. And we need many wins not just ‘going undefeated’ !:joy:
