Post match: Liverpool v Chelsea (EPL 28/8/2021 5.30pm)

I think you are being harsh. It was a ping pong melee in real time and just maybe he was unsighted. There were a lot of players in that area. It happens you know.

It is far easier to ref a game from the sofa

Definite pen and I can see it has to be a red under the present rules but I felt sorry for the lad and it was obvious our lads did too.

It’s literally been the rule for the longest time. Denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity with your arm – red. I can’t believe intent is even being debated here…

He changes the direction of the ball with his arm and moves his arm in such a way as to prevent it going in. What on earth more do you want?
It was handball and thus red.
Why discuss the obvious?

Exactly! Remember Suarez versus Ghana?

Or Oxlade-Chamberlain against, ironically, Chelsea.

Agree with this thought the Red was harsh and with our record with VAR i expected nothing to be given at all and it would be play on.

The slow mo was pretty damning though. Watching them slow it down at half time it looked pretty bad but at full speed no where near as bad and certainly not a stonewall pen like some are saying. Seen worse not given, when it comes to us and VAR nothing is stonewall IMO.

I agree but I an still amazed that Taylor gave it :stuck_out_tongue:

But that’s what VAR is for and it worked perfectly yesterday.
Probably pre VAR the ref wouldn’t have seen it in the melee, but with the benefit of the replay it’s clearly a penalty.
It’s an obvious example of why VAR is a good thing.

On the rest of the game itself, I missed the first half, but what I saw of the second half I think a lot of the complaining here is way overdone.

Yes we didn’t win against 10 men, but firstly, this is not Arsenal. Chelsea can defend well, and it’s often the case that when a team goes 1 player (or more) down, they go ultra-defensive. This makes our job even harder. I think the only thing we ought to be worried about attacking-wise is more of the finishing, rather than anything else. The moment the red card came out, this was pretty much always going to be the case. Even last year when Christensen was sent off, we toyed with them for the second half as well, but we only scored thanks to actually being able to get something on target, and Kepa. All the hand-wringing is overwrought.

Secondly, Anthony Taylor was by all accounts, pretty terrible. The one thing that got to me was just the time-wasting that he let them engage in.

Apart from that, I’m reasonably comfortable with yesterday, depending of course on how Firmino is. It’s still early in the season, and somehow many people are expecting us to steamroller everyone and while claiming at the same time, we need a billion new players. The truth is, we’re still in pretty much a pre-season hangover, and I expect us to improve as time goes on. That’s it, really.

It is not harsh. It’s literally been the rules for an eternity. Ball bounces off your arm/hand and therefore does not go in when it was, it’s a red card and a penalty. I don’t understand how there’s even a debate about it. Not harsh, not slow motion, nothing. Maybe unlucky if he didn’t intend it, but always a red and a penalty.

Blue Moon Taylor should have clamped down on the time wasting aspect… because when a side is down to ten men… that is ‘exactly’ why they do it…!
Grasping to get a breather and take attacking pressure away from themselves…
When going down to ten men, Chelski had no-one else to blame but themselves… so why oh why, does Blue Moon Taylor dictate that they can waste as many minutes as they want without compensating for that with added time…!

Im glad he brought Tsimikas on, i was calling for it before he did it because Robbo wasnt having a good game out there and i thought better crosses may help us but this doesnt take anything away from Ox, Keita or Taki. Perhaps the plan all along was to give Robbo 70 or 80 minutes because Klopp didnt think he could manage a full 90. Perhaps he could see Robbo not getting up and down the line as well as usual because he’s still not fully fit or perhaps he just noticed he wasn’t playing as well.

Either way it’s no slight on the midfielders to change a player who’s just back from injury rather than change the midfield further. Btw he used all 3 subs yesterday, Jota and Thiago had already come on so he only had one more sub left. Perhaps he thought protecting Robbo was more important than changing a midfield that already had most of the possession. To me during the game i also thought Tsimi had as much chance of creating a goal as maybe Ox, Taki or Keita in those last few minutes

Well done to Chelsea, they were organized and defended well second half. Elliott showed some spirit, thought he had a great game. Can’t help but think one of Klopp’s subs should have been AOC, he can rifle them in from range, and we were having trouble breaking through. No major gripes though. If Chelsea can keep that up all year they’ll be around top of table.

Hope Bobby is all right.

Q: Why didn’t Taylor whistle for the handball in real time whan he had to of seen it ?

A: Because he didn’t want to.

Fewest touches from all the players (including Mendy and Alisson).

Thanks for clarifying what my opinion should be.

And whilst it has been the rules for an eternity I’ve seen the same thing not given plenty of times. What the rules are and what actually gets called by the Ref are two different things.

I’m glad VAR was there to give us a pen and its good it worked as it should to make the correct decision which thankfully went in our favor but its gone against us in questionable circumstance plenty of times too so tbh I have 0 confidence in VAR the refs the linesmen any of them tbh. They get it wrong as often as they get it right.

And there’s the problem right there.

At the other end they are surrounding the referee demanding a red card for our player.

We never learn.

Most touches he made, were the ones wiping sweat off his head…and trying to get round Virg…
