No, not this one. Owen is annoying. I reckon it was Redknapp… not sure anymore…anyway.
I do believe that. But three things besides their form are crucial to get them going in my opinion: our starting CB partnership, better pressing, and better delivery. Strangely, all these three things have a common denominator: VVD and Gomez starting at CB, so that Hendo and Fabinho are in midfield.
Our high line is working best when we have VVD and Gomez. VVD could just outsprint a striker even when starting to contest the ball from a disadvantageous position. We simply don’t have anyone that can do that right now. Gomez somehow would be very naturally partnering him.
That would also help pressing, as we would make the field smaller with the high line, and also we had our best midfielders in midfield-Hendo pressing there was crucial.
Another vital thing for the front three was delivery, which was mainly coming from fullbacks.
Lack thereof isn’t just a matter of lesser form of the fullbacks, it’s again a matter of having Hendo and Fabinho playing in their midfield positions.
It’s clear how Hendo would cover fullbacks when they roamed up the pitch, and how Fabinho dropping to aid the CBs also freed them up to attack, making their delivery better.
These past two months these are two elements we simply lacked, and of course add to that TAA form and Robbo burned out, resulted to a lack of fullback delivery to the front three, ergo less shots.
So then confidence is affected, and the much fewer chances are not taken as often as they would. It’s natural-when you have 10-15 chances, you don’t need all of them to go in, so you’re more relaxed. Just 3 going in is usually more than enough (remember how many games we’d score 3+).
When you only get 3-5 shots, i.e. a couple per forward, then stress prevails, because these need to get in, otherwise the team won’t score. Which causes them to try to shoot from non ideal situations (so many blocked shots I can’t keep track), try too hard, or simply shoot under too much stress and mess up the shot.
That’s hopefully coming all back when we have our full starting 11…
