Post Match: Liverpool v Everton (EPL 20/2/21 5.30pm)

8 shots on target and we score Zero, dominated every aspect of the game except what matters putting it in the net. The pen was a absolute joke and Klopp should complain about it. The way things are going we won’t even be playing Europa league football next season.

For now, can we both just pretend it’ll be really soon?

With regard to what we can control, we play too slow, in front of packed defenses. Not enough craft to get through them, around them, over them… So we need to massively improve here, and this is in our hands. We can, and must, do better.

With regard to what we can’t control, the stack of injuries in central defence is astonishing. Today was the 17th different pairing this season, and when you are down to 6-7th picks in the one position, after VVD, Gomez, Matip, Fabinho and Henderson all out, well, I defy anyone to not suffer.

We also can’t control the uneven officiating. It was a breath of fresh air to play a CL game recently, as the ref actually refereed the game in front of him, applying the laws to the best of his ability. Not perfectly, but it was a relief to just have an even shot at it, without undue unfairness from the man with the whistle, and his cohorts in the VAR booth.

We were not good enough today, but that pen was iffy. DCL kneed Trent’s head and went over. And beyond the pen Everton were just manhandling us all over the park. Gomes, for example, was allowed to do half a dozen fouls before finally the ref had to look for a card.

Somehow we have to find a way to regroup. I think positions 2-7 are all up for grabs for us, and a few results going the right way will see us climb.

To get there let’s play central defenders in central defence now. And let’s play midfielders in midfield. Radical, I know, but it might just work.

We look good in the CL but we can’t rely on winning that. Hopefully we do, but we have to regroup and fight for top four in the Prem, even in spite of all the adversity we continue to battle.

We are doing the same things game after game, when the tools on which our original game was based is not there.

Across the league, managers are adjusting and finding different ways to win, we are just rolling out the same game…

Arse!

Other than that, I’m looking for positives. The number of injuries has got so silly I wasn’t even sure who got the captain’s armband today. Did anyone take it.

We aren’t scoring and our defense has been wrecked several times over. We now have both midfielders pretending to be CB injured.

Going forward, we should be looking to defend first and try to score on the counter. Not ideal but our defence is in bits and we know we can do the latter.

MotM. TBH I thought Nat did OK when he came on. Other than that, no one covered themselves in glory.

possibly, as it might force us into a change of system. But, I don’t really wanna wish any of our players injuries :frowning:

That is just being stubborn for that sake of it.

Our injury list, to my knowledge is as of today

VvD
Matip
Gomez
Milner
Henderson
Jota
Fabinho
Keita

Now tell me again how you adjust to that?

It’s not the only reason but it’s a damn big one.

When will we stop playing such a high defensive line? We haven’t got the pace, accept it and stand a little further back and give ourselves a chance.

When will somebody shoot from outside the box?

Bob, take some responsibility, stop passing and shoot.

And for God’s sake Mo, everyone knows you want to shoot with your left foot. Have a go with your right.

Yes, the referee was shite, but we have become the authors of our own downfall.

Too predictable, too pedestrian, mix it up a bit.

We can forget the league; perhaps top four is beyond us. Just go all out in the Champion’s League. Maybe, just maybe we might do something in that competition.

You know what I’d try?

Swap Mane and Salah over and tell the full backs to get beyond them if the opportunity arises. Get these two looking outside rather than the usual tuck inside. Lets stretch a defense and more importantly get behind them.

truth is, other than that I’m honestly stumped.

Yup. In the RB Leipzig game the ref was consistent. Similar fouls got the same punishment.

In this game, go back to see what Mane and Kabak did to get a yellow. Then look at the fouls by Everton, especially in the first half where they looked to foul when the ball is in transition.

Even the Henderson non-contact injury stemmed from trying to get away and run into midfield while the Everton player attempted to slow him down by pulling his shirt.

Another first half incident with Andre Gomes, who gets skipped past, then he attempts to pull the shirt. Ref waves play on, but the tug back has worked by slowing the game and letting them get back into position. Ref just talks to him.

Play Centre Halfs at Centre Half.

Drop/shoot Firmihno. Play Salah in centre. Play Jota if fit Shaqiri if not on right

Drop Thiago and Winaldum. Play Curtis Henderson and Keita in Midfield.

Henderson on one leg?

Well, Bobby tried today. And that ended up in the stands.

I’d prefer more late runs from midfielders into the box for the cross/pass when TAA or Andy get in good position.

You don’t know what you are talking about. Your ability to adjust depends on the length of your injury list. When that is a mile long and you literally have to use midfielders in defence there are going to be one or two problems.

No team in the world would have been able to cope with the amount of injuries Liverpool have had. Including the nouveaux riche plastic ones.

Liverpool is playing like Barcelona few years ago. All the possesion but do nothing with it. Opponent are just building a wall and are waiting.
More shots from outside the goals (they tried first half and created danger). Maybe a system change till we have injured players back?
And a shift in refs behaviour.

It’s not just the amount of injuries - its how targetted they are. City were written off last season with just Laporte injured. If Laporte, Dias and Stones all had season ending injuries it wouldn’t matter about their other injuries because their back line would be beyond open and they would not be pushing for the title

Cheer up guys no matter what happens we won’t be the worst defending champions ever I’ve just been told the record for ‘worst title defence’ actually belongs to Manchester City. Champions in 1937…relegated in 1938.
