Konate was said not to be too far away ā¦ he is expected to return this week - is likely to be in the team for United (assuming he wonāt be risked against Sparta even if he is ready by then).
CBs are rarely versatile. But Gomez is one that is. Well, in any case, Gomez is our most versatile player, our Swiss army knife, effectively taking Milnerās role this season. We know he can play CB, RB, LB, imverted full-back, no. 6 etc. We would have been doomed already if he was not so versatile.
But what is important: Trent should be back after the international break. So for the run-in - if no new injuries arise - we will have two RBs (Trent, Bradley), two LBs (Robbo, Tsimi) and three CBs (VVD, Ibou, Quansah), in addition to Gomez - who might be then able to play CB mostly. And if we can effectively rotate four CBs and four full-backs, no one would be run into the ground. Especially as defence was the only department where we at least had some rotational options in the last three weeks, unlike midfield and attack.
Iām sure it must be VARs intervention to upgrade Jones yellow to a red (which also included a still image of the contact being made, which is against protocol).
Also, almost all VAR cases they have viewed to be incorrect were failures to overturn a decision. I think there were only 2 cases viewed to have been interventions that should not have been made.
No. Maybe youāre thinking about Jota as they did determine that second yellow was a bad decision (as commented above, they didnt consider the first, as only second yellows are considered Key Match Events). Also remember that we appealed Jonesā red and it got immediately turned down. That is in contrast to Alexisā that was over turned on appeal.
There continue to be detractors of the āinverted FBā approach. There are people who still, even in his absence, seem to view it as a very TrentCentric approach designed to get him on the ball in the middle of the pitch. This thread here lays out the bigger point of it - itās about getting more bodies into the positions on the pitch where the counter pressing tends to happen
The argument here: for most of the first half we were pretty traditional, one FB given licence to get forward (and stay wide) and the other staying back and pinching in. But the result was we often lacked enough players around the ball when we lost of counter press effectively. Sometime after Cityās goal we started pushing Gomez into midfield more (requiring Bradley to drop in more, possibly why he was taken off later in favour of Robbo), which then allowed Maca and Szobo the ability to push on when we didnt have the ball and the result was we made things a LOT harder for City to play from there on.
