Post match: Liverpool v Man Utd (EPL 19/4/22 8pm)

The thing is WeeJoe because of the doping cheaters we are unlikely to win the league. 1 league title in 4 seasons when we have one point less than them over that entire time, coupled with the magic of our win being marred by the empty stadiums, ‘null and void’ apprehension and general pandemic shittery which destroyed our ability to properly celebrate and it’s pretty disappointing that one of the greatest teams we have ever seen is unlikely to get the titles it merits.
I’m overly pessimistic, perhaps, and absolutely the boys just have to keep on going but I think we are likely to flog ourselves winning all the league games just to have cheaty do the same and then find the extra exertion counts against us in the FA Cup and possibly CL final. Anything less than a CL would be a travesty for this team, this season.

Spot on.

What really makes me angry is the thought of coming 2nd but being within 3 points of the cheats. If that happens then Kavanagh, the corrupt referee from Manchester, will have been the deciding figure in where the title ends up. It really is that simple. His clear cheating and corruption has been in plain sight this season and right now looks like it will be the deciding factor.
How fucked up is that? The magnificent effort of our clubs’ players over the course of the season being rendered pointless because of a disgusting cheat. Nobody will care though, the fucking cowards in the media will all fawn over how wonderful ‘Pep’ is and the world will keep on turning. It makes me sick.

Again, if anybody finds the views expressed in this post offensive don’t hesitate to flag it up to a mod and have it removed

I get that you’re very passionate about your football, but this fury and hatred will end up killing you :frowning: It’s like drinking poison expecting someone else to get ill. None of us are getting out of here alive so do try to just get some fun and pleasure while you’re in a position to do so

In a world of equity and fairness we would be enjoying a golden era of Liverpool football. Titles to exceed Man Utds total, CL number 7 already in the bag.

But we are denied this, which dilutes the fun or enjoyment for me anyway. This is a great Liverpool team. Watching them is a joy.

But Man City have won trophies because they have broken rules. Forget onfield stuff, their financial irregularities are posted by Der Spiegal and no one is reacting? Derby are relegated for less.
On the pitch Liverpool are disadvantaged by inexplicable decisions…hard to have fun when you see the Brighton keeper assault Diaz with no consequence?
CL? No 6 was there in Kiev, but assault on Salah was instrumental in Madrid winning. Fun?

I really understand your point, and I maintain the view that every trophy Liverpool win at the moment is because they are 110%…to compete with cheats they have to be better than excellent.

Well he must have been referring to light years.

As a kid I was confused by the idea of Revie’s Leeds being a big team. I knew we won a bunch of stuff in that period so it was difficult getting my head around how another team from the same era was so revered, and when I looked at the honours lists didn’t see enough in their name to understand why. They won some things, but so did Derby County. It seemed their reputation was outsized relative to the stuff they won. In time I came to understand it a bit more, but I’m starting to really connect with that reality.

Im not drawing comparisons between the clubs as much as coming to the realization that sometimes eras are not defined just by title wins. People say that no one remembers who came in second, but Revie’s Leeds show that isnt true. Wenger’s Arsenal to a degree as well. One a few occasions they overcame Utd, but over the period that we remember as Wenger’s peak, Utd still won more titles and overall trophies (including the CL) than they did. I think you have win some things to get in the narrative, and we already have and likely will win more, but sometimes history does remember more the competition than it does the final tally of who won what.

Excellent post mate and couldn’t agree more. We are watching probably the greatest Liverpool team ever and yet these players are going to be denied the medals they deserve by one set of cheats or another, be it domestically or in Europe. And if all else fails the likes of City can rest assured that blatant cheats like Kavanagh, Coote and Atkinson will bail them out. And nobody gives a toss because they’d rather a vile organisation won it over an honest team and club.
If none of that makes you angry then I don’t know what would.

This whole thing is a process not an outcome. It seems many of us are letting things completely outside of our control prevent you enjoying what should be one of the best, most enjoyable periods any club could have. This is the attitude that sees a manager like Del Bosque get fired because he ONLY won the league at Real. Not only is it poisonous, but it robs you of enjoying the bits that should be enjoyed and celebrated.

I’m angry about it, but I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. Man City have gamed the system and cheated their way through, not least financially. UEFA brought them to book, somewhat, but then they escaped meaningful punishment with CAS and essentially proved that the game itself is not able to hold them to account and in my opinion will probably need government agency, if and when that ever happens.

Do we want Klopp to speak about this more? If so, he will quickly sound like a sore loser (if we lose).
Do we want the owners to speak about it more?
Is a fan campaign warranted? Will it add to the victim culture we are accused of by the misinformed wider game?

I can’t set the agenda for the media, but this massive story is overlooked. It is the ONLY worthwhile story in relation to Man City. Der Spiegel have been onto them for some time, but the UK media has it relegated to a footnote in the narrative.

In the meantime, I put all of my energy (from afar, as a non match going red) into supporting the team, watching every game, enjoying it with my lad, cheering, getting overjoyed, unduly upset, and all the rest of it.

Serious question though:
We know Man City are cheats.
What are we supposed to do about it?

Yep, Klopp is doing the right thing at rising above it. As you say, there is no way for him to engage on that stuff without him coming off to most people as looking for excuses. And beyond that, he’s doing what he can to cultivate the idea among our players that we’ve big challenge and need to rise to the challenge. The more you talk about the unfairness of it the more you give an excuse to players to not meet that challenge.

It is one of the best periods we could have, but it us compromised by cheats being allowed to compete and win. If City received the sanctions they obviously deserve the pitch would be level and Liverpool would win what is truly deserved. Its a handicap system where Liverpool are saddled with extra weight because of corruption or incompetence or downright cowardice.

I am watching a sublime Liverpool side, a dream to behold. But…they have to rise above the handicap system to win. That isn’t just or fair.

You might remember Vienna, sublime piece of recording by Ultravox. Soaring sounds, perfect lyrics…beautiful piece of music. Kept off the top by a tawdry piece of shit by a one hit wonder Joe Dolce. A piece of shit that was in bargain bins a couple of months after. No soul, nothing.
Those of us of an age remember and love Vienna. But it wasn’t number one.

Small travesty but a microcosm of the way Liverpool are out trophied in a golden age by a soulless forgettable plaything.

That’s a typically classy response from our club. Once again I’m proud to be a red.

As far as the rest of it goes:
Football is not different to any other area of life. It’s all unfair to a greater or lesser extent. There’s no way anyone should have the riches of Bezos or Musk, there’s no reason that countries should be in the hands of Trump or Putin or Johnson, there are CEOs who should never have got their jobs, there’s that bloke at work who gets away with murder because he’s mates with the boss and on and on it goes. It’s annoying and frustrating and we should fight it wherever we can, but there’s no reason to expect that football should be any different to any other part of life.

Gutless horseshit from our club. 33 years it’s gone on for. 33 fucking years. It’s laughable.

What do you think they should have done?
