Post match: Liverpool v Man Utd (EPL 5/1/25 4.30pm)

Slot criticized Alexis for not tracking back fast enough for United’s second goal.

TAW post match pod is a great listen. Very balanced in discussing Trent. It sounds like it was absolutely toxic towards him in the stands. Fucking idiots. We’ve got a league to win. Stay at home and shout at the tv, and give your tickets to fans who will get behind the team!

It was really heartbreaking when John Gibbons said he thought about leaving on 70’ because it got so toxic. Beyond normal criticism of the player and into the realms of nasty, personal abuse.

I think the thing that has changed on this is the mood has shifted from blaming FSG for contracts, to now a sense starting to creep in that Trent is the one pissing about. Mo and Virgil have made it clear they want to stay, Trent has said nothing. And the rumour broke this week about a £300k a week contract on the table. I think that has shifted the focus of people’s frustrations away from the club and firmly on to Trent and his camp.

Gutmann was also right when he said that it might be getting the point where Slot needs to get involved and just take him out of the firing line as long as that contract remains unsigned.

I think Hughes and Edwards need to bring this to a head, take account of what he wants, and make a final offer to him. Give him a week to sign it, make it clear he will not be playing until it is signed, and if he won’t budge then we offer him to Madrid for £20m.

If it was intense before, then it is going be that x10 now. Every team is going to target him, the toxicity is not going to abate and there is a real risk this derails our title bid.

And people were wondering why I said that this was Real Madrid’s tactic.

Congratulations you imbeciles. You might actually be manifesting his departure from your insecurities.

Just for clarity, who is the imbecile here?

The ones abusing Alexander-Arnold.

Because that abuse is 100% going to convince him to stay.

The sense of entitlement of some… :see_no_evil:

Don’t they know the quote: Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall.

I know it’s impossible to enforce, but these pricks and their freaking arrogance shouldn’t be allowed to enter Anfield in the first place.

I think it would have helped if he’d handled this a bit like Salah or Van Dijk, saying ‘I want to stay but nothing to report’.

At some point Trent refusal to say anything at all (bar cryptic goal celebrations we can all read into whatever we want) starts to look like quite telling.

I’m at the point where I don’t want him anywhere near the Forest game. I don’t want him exposed to that personally. I don’t want the team to suffer from the scrutiny that brings. I don’t want that biased cunt Neville, going ‘Ooooooooooh’ every time a player runs at him.

Spurs and Accrington are to varying degrees less important. But we need points from the City ground, which is going to be a fucking dog of a game. We need everyone on it 100%. We need the support behind the team and we need no distractions.

Only if you want to read that into it.

The moment he says he wants to stay, that’s a lot of his negotiating power gone.

I think that’s a very unsophisticated way of looking at it. Everyone knows the is a PR element to this, and what he says round a table with Hughes and Edwards doesn’t need to be what he tells the fans. Mo and Virgil have had no problem saying they want to stay. I doubt it’s damaged their negotiating positions.

An even less sophisticated, but more obvious, way of looking at it is that Virg and Mo actually do want to stay, whereas Trent wants to leave. If he said he wanted to stay but was found to be negotiating with RM at the same time that could leave a really bad taste.

What concerned me most was the fact that not only did it unsettle Trent but also some of his team mates as well, they should support wholeheartedly until we know for sure what his intentions are at the end of the season. The small section of supporters at Anfield giving stick are just doing dirty work of the media of battering our manager at every press conference about contracts. There are quite a few other players at other rival club coming to the end of their contract but nothing is asked or very little .
I was well impressed today with Slot Ashe batted away a lot of questions about that subject with a calm demeanour and never losing his rag, Klopp would have lost it by now facing that barrage .

I think Arne got this totally wrong, by not removing him earlier, with the game he was having, the ire towards him just built more and more, I know it did with me sat at home.

Sometimes players have bad games and it is up to the manager/coach to replace them, for the team and players sake, Trent would have known he was having a stinker and expected to be withdrawn.

The counter argument would be that a top-class professional would back himself to improve his performance and redeem himself on the pitch.

A top class professional would understand the team comes 1st and the Coach/manager would be right in removing him with how he was performing

On TAW they were also saying how when some players are having a poor game they will just run harder, put some tackles in etc (like Robbo did) which fans appreciate. Trent has always tried to do do something spectacular when playing poor- a big assist, long distance shot etc. It’s high risk/reward and looks awful when it’s not working

In other words, exactly what the Madrid strategy was, and how it will succeed.

This, 100%.

If TAA has said he will make his decision at the end of the season, maybe, just maybe, he wants to see/judge what Arne Slot is all about… Is he a winner, or a numpty…!
Back in July, no-one could guess either way.
As the weeks and the games go by, we are all getting a chance to see AS in action… tactics, team selection, media etc…
Now, if AS is wise enough to know, for TAA is to stay beyond this season - the pair have to build up a strong/solid relationship, a sort of respect towards each other.
If AS had hauled off TAA on Sunday, any earlier than he did, there would be a good chance of damaging any blossoming friendship/respect between them…
If AS wants TAA to sign, then why risk fracturing the relationship before it has really had a chance to gel…!
