Post match: Liverpool v Msn City (EPL 3/10/21 4.30pm)

A few thoughts on todays game.

City were seriously good, especially in the first half. We couldn’t get near them and when we did get the ball there was nowhere to go. I was hoping for half time from about 20 minutes in so we could reorganise. Everyone was massively frustrated. We were all up for it but there was nothing to get excited about. In the end we were reduced to wildly celebrating a corner but the second half was a different story.

The second half was brilliant. Great football played in a fantastic atmosphere. It had almost everything even an epic Pep tantrum. All it was lacking was a late Liverpool winner for it to become an instant classic. It should have had one. I still can’t believe Fabinho didn’t score.

Mo’s goal. Wow. I’ve just seen it back for the first time. Incredible. At the time he was just a blur of arms and legs and then the ball was in the net. He reminds me of Suarez in 13/14. Unplayable and on a personal mission to win us the title.

We are better than we were a year ago but not as good as we were two years ago. The main difference is the defending. There’s no shame in losing leads to City. They are a very good team, but when this team was at its peak we would have closed that down. Held a good shape and hit them on the break. Today there was an obvious point of vulnerability in Milner, but its deeper than that. Virgil isn’t quite there yet. Midfield today was very flaky and fatigue was an obvious factor.

We are still in with a good shout this season. The games against Chelsea and City have come too early for us. We don’t usually get going until November so I expect us to improve. No one else other than those two teams looks as good as us but we’ll need luck with injuries and we’ve got to tighten up at the back.

Henderson was shocking today. Jones never got into the match. Take the point after that first half performance. Probably the worst I’ve seen Henderson play.

Fabinho probably exhausted after doing the work of the other 2 in that first half.

Personally thought Silva was the best player on the pitch. He was excellent.

For Henderson surely? Couldn’t pass, repeatedly caught in possession, was awful in his 1v1s. He was off it all game.

I think Milner was lucky to still be on the pitch but I might be alone in thinking he didn’t deserve a second yellow for the Bernardo challenge. Milner clearly won the ball.

the problem with fabs is he is the last line of defence. so if the two cm’s don’t do their jobs, fabs is left on an island and will always look worse than he really is

@Kopstar and anyone else who spotted the typo in the thread title.

I spotted this as well, but only after I opened the thread. The problem now if it’s it’s changed, it will wipe the poll votes. Don’t want to do that, so I think we’ll have to live with it…

Just finished a recording of the match. Managed radio silence until I could get to it.

Proper big game, fans, great occasion. Loved it!

We started well and were on top for the first 10-15, but then City found their groove and we were chasing shadows most of the rest of the first half.

Glad to get in level at the half, to be honest.

Second half we were brilliant. Mo Salah, wow. Great assist for Sadio, but then his worldie solo effort, just incredible.

The one slight concern is we lost the lead twice, but then again, it was against an excellent opponent, albeit an artificially inflated, cynical outfit… who also looked suspiciously strong and fast all over the pitch.

Milner lucky not to get a second yellow, but on the other hand they foul all game long, often cynically so. Every corner they were all over Allison too, though I didn’t hear a peep from the commentators, much less the ref. So if we got away with one, it is well deserved as they are so cynical in their systematic fouling all game long.

2-2, not bad, but slightly an opportunity missed, but overall, what a great game of football.

It’s a three way race, with Man Utd a step behind, and Neverton quite possibly the best of the rest.

its written in the stars…

i mean…we even commissioned the greatest ever modern song writers to write a tune for him in preperation…like…50 plus years in preperation…

That means you are ok with us getting 3rd???

How do we ensure stability when the original is built on sand???

It’s Michael Edwards we are talking about. If he can wrench 19 million pounds from Bournemouth for Solanke, he can do miracles with keita and AOC’s price.

@JU97ICE, we are not saying we should be 100 million pounds on full-backs. All we are saying is that we need to address the obvious deficiencies in the squad which is the lack of depth in CM and the lack of depth at RB.

Peter Griffin runs marathons now - I bet Lois is pleased?
If you think a point was generous to us based on the second half then missing the first half looks like a great move…

I re-watched the highlights of this match.

What surprised me was that despite City dominating us from minutes 15-45, the goal-scoring chances were even.

XG may disagree, but according to what I saw, City’s scoring chances were 3-0 in the first half compared to us, while it was 5-2 for us in the second half. And that includes de Bruyne’s deflected goal and Dias’s world class defending to stop Fab from scoring.

We were the better side in the second half, and may have been unlucky not to have won.

Yeah I agree with that, and so do the stats

Total Shots 6 12
On Target 4 3
Big Chances 3 1
Big chances missed 1 1
Keeper Saves 1 1
Expected goals 1.09 0.91

City had more shots, but our chances were better.

We do have some shortcomings in our team. Most notably the backup RB and this game has shown that. TAA for all his defensive frailties wouldn’t have been beaten so often as what Milly and Gomez had in the first half. The international break probably has come at the right time for once , allows Trent to recuperate.

I do wish Ox had been in form , Considering his record against city , I would have played him instead of one of either of Jones/Hendo. Liverpool missed the directness in the first Half

I tried to pick Salah 3 times but it wouldn’t let me!

felt that Jones was overmatched in this game, and we would have done better had TAA been able to play. I can’t decide if we got away with a point or lost two that we should have gotten. Still early days yet, we need to convert the games we have against mid-table teams into wins. YNWA!

I thought you were just pissed with City or in general.
