Hope Slot learns a lot from this game. Slow build ups, square passing continually gives the opponents so much time to get back and into shape. If you’ve got the best goalkeeper in the world and fully fit you must play him. On set pieces don’t put the smallest player on the pitch to mark the tallest. Fully deserved win from Newcastle and we’ve got to dig deep to get over the line for the League.
That’s because Slot wouldn’t play them in the first place. It is a weak excuse that Slot trotted out. The reality is that he had ample opportunities to integrate them, and he chose not to.
What bothers me is the implication that Kelleher was going to cause trouble. He has never done so before and him saying that he wants to start games is perfectly fine for me. I get the argument about the logic of dropping a world class goalkeeper for his backup but that’s not Kelleher’s fault.
Not really, Anfield has to be the 12 man to counter their probable one in the Ref.
I don’t think he is over the injury. Ribs/Chest can be a fucker to heal.
Noboby has said make 8 changes but surely we can rotate more to rest players, physically and mentally
I think you saw the man we’d like today. He was wearing black and white.
They deserved it. I think it’s a bit like last season when we ran out of steam, at least we didn’t lose to any of our bitter rivals.
- Slot should have brought Salah on.
- I blame Thomas Tuchel - He’s turned Burn from a donkey into a thoroughbred donkey.
- Whoever decided that MacAllister should mark aforementioned donkey at corners needs firing.
- Lucky we have such a big points advantage in the league, we look spent.
- I fucking hate Geordies.
First name Dan?
Slot tends to be very straightforward when he answers question, so if he said this it’s probably the truth.
We’re all armchair managers, but few of us ever acknowledge that we over simplify issues that are a lot more complicated in reality.
We have averaged 2.41 points per game so far.
If Arsenal win all their games (and that’s a BIG if), we would need to drop to 1.55 PPG for them to overtake us.
So the only way we lose this league now is if our form falls completely off a cliff AND Arsenal win all their games. Without the refs’ intervention, that ain’t happening.
You know that last caveat?
Also injuries, maybe we can wait until we win it, hell it maybe even fun when it happens.
When is it going to end?
Arsenal now have the 2 games against Real thrown in the mix.
I’ve said mutliple times that while we haven’t fucked up on transfers too often we did start to let players that looked good just slip past us. Isak is one of those players that it felt like we would have identified and competed for when Edwards ran our recruitment but were allowing to pass us by when he left and Klopp started to have more influence, which became a bit too loyal to current players. Hopefully we go back to being a little more proactive and forward-thinking under Hughes - especially since it all looks naturally aligned to some sort of squad evolution this summer.
The most they can get, if they are perfect from here, is 85 points. The most we can get is 97 points.
There is work to be done, and it isn’t won until it’s won, but the bookies have us at something like 99% on for a reason.
Some thoughts…
Newcastle U FC. They deserved to win. Nice to see a new name on the cup. I would be pleased for them, if the win wasn’t also a masterclass in shithousery.
Refereeing. Too much romance of the cup/ plucky underdog. Allowed their shithousery to flourish. VAR desperately tried to rule out our goal
The Reds. Very poor. Out played, out fought, out thought. We all have off days and they are forgiven provided they dont bollox number 20.
Slot. Most worrying of all. Didnt seem to have a clue. Didnt respond to their corner tactics. Substitutions seemed amateur and panicked. No tactical plan to change the game.Throw on all the attackers take off defenders and midfielders. Just a first little twinge of doubt about Mr Slot. I really hope that we havent mistaken genius for a run of good luck. Please let today just be a managerial blip. Please !
I usually don’t care much about the cups, but it’s always annoying to lose a final. Not surprised to see us looking tired though, it’s what happened last year with the same squad. Let’s get the league done and then we’ll see what happens in the summer.
Given we’re top of the league and have a really good shot at it + we were top of the group stage of CL, Slot is in a better position than us to justify his choices. And we tend to forget this is his first season. Just because he’s got us this far doesn’t mean we’re entitled to win everything. Look at Arteta still struggling to adjust to the league in his umpteenth season. Slot will learn from all this; just like Klopp did.
Agree with many parts, but we never really tried to play it into our midfielders, I do remember, it may have been out 1st play from the back in the 2nd half, Virg actually played a vertical ball into Macca’s feet, who was tightly marked, and Macca played it 1st time back to Virg on an angle and we played through them.
We do that a few times they either have to drop, as the press isn’t working or move more players into the press and then there is more option for a long PASS.
