Post match: Liverpool v Real Madrid (UCL FINAL 28/5/22 8pm)

This is what I meant to say in my head. That our finishing wasnt good enough to put one past an annoyingly good t.c.

This is from Steve Douglas, of the Associated Press.

Last time I checked, France is not China, where freedom of press is a meaningless concept. AP are not some tinpot organization.

This should be a bigger story than it is. Forcing journalists to delete footage? What are they trying to hide?

Does the rest of the media not care about infringements on journalists?

This summed up an absolute farce of a refereeing performance

First of all, congratulations to Madrid, Courtois, and Ancelotti. Well played. Iā€™m heartbroken, but not disappointed. And above all else, Iā€™m proud of our players, Klopp (and other behind the scene staff), our fans, and our owners.

Thereā€™s this frustration that we didnā€™t/couldnā€™t score in the three finals. We conceded just one goal in those three finals and we werenā€™t the low-block team. Itā€™s the finals, two of the best teams in the tournaments were competing and a fine margin decided the outcomes. While Kelleher and Tsimikas became heroes twice, Courtois stepped up this time. If we arenā€™t able to accept and cherish this beauty of the game, we are missing the very spirit of it.

Iā€™m not an arrogant person. But I will say this without any reservations, this is as far as you can get to a quadruple. We are Mentality Monsters, but we arenā€™t machines. And even machines suffer wear & tear. The fact that even this team couldnā€™t win the quadruple means no one else can. We had a near-perfect season. Some pieces didnā€™t fall into place because the real world is about imperfections and elements of luck. Look back at the season Real and Cheaty had, and you can realize how awesome we had been.

This is a great message

I must appologise I havent read everyones posts befor this one.
I thought we played very well most of the match however tactically something has been awry for a little while. Last night showed it up. Again I am sorry for going on about this but the way we go down the right side of the pitch just isnā€™t working and RM were drilled for it. Trent just keeps giving the ball away when everyone else is out of position. He no longer gets to the wide positions where his crosses are so lethal (his concentration is interacting with Salah from a much more central position). Henderson gets to the biline more often. We insist over and over again with going down the right and giving the ball away cheaply. We ignore our left side yet are much more direct down that side with the players we have.
Anyway Trent very wasteful tonight, trying to force it?,
Alisson had a mare to forget about.
VVD seems more interested in getting away from the ball than getting stuck in leaving KonatƩ with the difficult physical sruff (understandable but sometimes VVD needs to get stuck in first rather than letting their attack get into our surface).
We produced so get moves with Thiagos passing and Diazā€™ neat controlls and more just our last ball was wanting and we didnā€™t keep the pace on the ball. With Courtois there to stop everything we didnā€™t get the rewards we deserved.
We played fucking well and deserved more unfortuneately RM are technical geniusā€™ and on occassion ripped us a new one.
Ref was a complete cunt, how can pulling a shirt off not be a yellow? He favoritism was evident something you donā€™t expect in this competition.
So, letā€™s go again next season and sort out our right side of midfield and attack (as it was before).

A great summing up of the game.

Is it weird that I find some solace that this time we didnā€™t lose because of outright assault?

Good thread on what happened last night from a journalistā€¦.

I think the whole of our squad are superhuman, to be honest. Weā€™ve just had the longest season in the history of English football, won two trophies and came within two goals of winning the others as well.

Not only that but we set the tempo, created the chances and pressed high for everyone of those games.

Despite being visibly exhausted by about the start of April, the players continued to gut out results. The quality of play waned as we got into the bowels of the campaign, we sometimes didnā€™t even look like we had the energy to make the runs we normally do. Yet somehow, someway we kept winning.

Two draining finals against a resolute Chelsea, City needed a stunning comeback at home to Villa to edge us out and then finally, in the last game of the season we came up against a Real Madrid side who have essentially been in the beach for the past month having wrapped up their league title a while ago.

Despite that we even controlled this game for large parts. 24 shots, 9 on target, 6 ā€œbigā€ chances and a 2.27 xG. We hit the post, we got Salah in behind 1x1, we did just about everything we could but Courtois stood tall and singlehandedly kept Madrid in the game.

And at the other end, a lazy looking pass cuts through three pressing Liverpool players. A winger takes a wild shot while being closed down by another three players and his spooned effort turns into an almost impossible cross for a back post tap in.

Football is a cruel sport sometimes.

Ultimately, we should reflect on what an incredible season it has been. The final two months of the campaign havenā€™t been the prettiest, the players have at times looked dead on their feet. They kept going. Kept trying, kept winning. Finally, the last game just proved a little bit too far. Millimetres too far.

What a club. What a group of players. Incredible effort by all of them. Next season we will be back again.

Dust settled a bitā€¦too upset to post lastnight and still a little downbeat this morning.

I thought we were good enough on the night to warrant bringing it home
Seen a few anti-Trent posts but i thought he had a decent gameā€¦Ibu immense.

Real thoughā€¦ I didnā€™t watch the PSG game so canā€™t really comment about that one but they got overran by Chelsea in both games i thought.
They got by them though but, having seen that, i thought City would ruin them.
ā€¦and to be fair they didā€¦how they came out of the first leg only 1 goal down was unbelievable. (GREAT match btw)ā€¦and the rest we know.

ā€¦and they were outplayed by us too.
Cortois and Carvajal by far their best players last night.
Top and bottom of it is though, the they beat the Premier leagueā€™s top 3 and you have to take your hat off to them for that.

I was wondering if anyone is planning to go to the parade? I urge everyone who can attend to do so. We need to show to the team and the manager how admired and appreciated they are for the astonishing season theyā€™ve had. Even more so after last night. Nothing would speak more loudly than having thousands upon thousands of people lining up the streets like in 2019.

Rafa out

I noticed that Rob Draper drew comparisons to Hillsborough. From the reports I saw last night it was almost as if someone had read the Taylor report and thought how can we recreate this?

As it was our fans with that etched into cultural memory it looks like most fans knew to stay still and try not to panic. Had it been another set of fans I dread to think how this might have played out.

I notice the Madrid fans were not treated in the same disgraceful manner.
