Post match: Liverpool v Real Madrid (UCL FINAL 28/5/22 8pm)

Covering the runner on the outside whilst also trying to block the cross/shot.

What else was he meant to do?

Close Valverde down maybe?

And leave the player on the outside free? I don’t think so.

Fabinho was on his way back but as usual was too slow.

That player on the outside would then have been offside.

VvD has been backing off way too much since his injury return.

No, he wouldn’t. He’s 2 yards on when Valderve strikes the ball.

The same thing he always does in that situation, trying to slow the winger down whilst also trying to not get exposed to the run on his outside. It’s a bitch if a situation to be put in but he’s probably the best in the world at dealing with it. Unfortunately it didn’t work this time.

Nor the time when Benzema scored. He allows way too many chances this way.

The problem was Robbo went for an adventure pressing Modric sold himself cheaply, one quick pass into the space behind Robbo and our defense was all shifting over but out of position.

Trent needs to be better at checking over his shoulder, but we are talking the finest of margins, it’s one defensive mistake in a game where he was excellent defensively, and just so happened when they got a fluked shot come cross.

The problem was Fabinho. Van Dijk bought him enough time to close down Valderve but he was running through treacle.

If Fabinho gets back with more urgency he cleans that situation up easily. Best dm in the world and all that though.

I thought Thiago wasn’t great either, both he and Fabinho were fine when Real played slowly in front of them but if both got turned they had zero recovery pace.

Brexit has nothing to do with it. French crowd controll is atrocious at the best of times.
The thing here is the numbers. They anticipate the number of supporters and then make catastrophic but repeated mistakes.
In this case give the Liverpool fans, as they are coming in numbers, the most difficult end to get to with over restrictive measures. Then they just wait around like muppets until something happens, which it will, then it’s over the top smashing the shit out of everyone and enormous liberal doses of gas alcrymogene. It’s the mode operatoire.
Btw Madrid supporters had problems as well it just wasn’t so bad as the end allocated to them has easier access and less restrictive policing because the numbers anticipated were a lot lower.
The thing is it’s not just in France this happens, remeber Hillsbourgh, the difference is that now they have their lies ready before the problems start. Lot’s of people mean lots without tickets trying to get in.
Anyway this hasn’t lowered my opinion of French police and crowd controll, it just can not get any lower than it already is. The thing is we need to learn from this as well and if we haven’t a ticket just don’t go. We will always end up with the finger pointed at us. Then their 5 big screens in the city will be a wasted expense.

Yes, as it played out you’re right

But Van Dijk closes him down, Konaté and Trent surely hold the line?

Unlikely to be a Gendarme in the centre of an aglomeration, CRS!!!

Still leaves the man free on the outside and he just holds his run.

Watch the clip from the start and look at how much time Fab has to get a block in. He is terrible at defending those situations in which we get turned around hence his consistently poor performances against the big teams.

I accept that. Still doesn’t excuse VvD’s constant reluctance to close down though, in my view.

I disagree, i think he gets it right on most occasions.

For all the praise of Matip and Konate, Van Dijk is still by far and away our best defender. The Benfica and Wolves games show how we miss Van Dijk’s leadership when he isn’t there. More often than not he gets it right.

I’ve had a troubled night of sleep and woke up feeling miserable. I watch our forwards and midfielders very closely during games. So many times we tend to stop forward movement before getting into the penalty zone when seconds count and other teams score goals. We tend to hold up and set up every time looking for an opening when a blind person could see one or two were available seconds before if only we continued a run or passed the ball forward.

I feel like the whole team was off kilter the past three cup games with no goals scored in regular time against Chelsea then no score yesterday. That’s not a good sign. Something offensively is not working and needs to be changed/modified. When it comes to Naby, I just don’t like his style of play especially his shots on goal. Talk about air balls. Salah hasn’t been up to par for awhile. Jota dropped off, Mane too. Luis Diaz absolutely got mobbed yesterday and basically shut down. I just feel I haven’t watched a welled oil team lately. Hopefully and I’m sure we will come back stronger and better next season. I’m tired of one point PL place differences. We need consistency, more wins less draws. GO REDS!

In this match he was leaving KonatĂ© far too much to do all match long. Yes he’s still our best defender and organiser however on occasion he needs to take a bit more responsibility imo.
His improvement over the season has been very good even so baling him out with the Fabs is shit line isn’t the way forward imo.

Saying we got outdone tactically means there are things tactically we needed to do better. What? What were those tactical things we got wrong? How should we have changed it? How could we change it in a way that trumps having had 2 months straight of 2 games a week that were all “must win”?

Real defended commendably well for a side that isnt used to being on the back foot, and especially given the like of Carvahal have had questions asked over them this year. But the reality is we never put Liverpool style pressure on them because at this stage of the season, as was the case pretty much all through the other 8 or so games in the month of May, we were unable to find 4th gear let alone 5th. This time we just came up against a side too good for us to get by on fumes alone.

When the camera focused on Rafa Nadal in the crowd last night the commentator said he was a massive Real Madrid supporter which coming from Mallorca I find strange. I would have thought he would be a Barca fan being Catalan.

Isn’t that a bit like being a scouser and supporting Chelsea?
