Post match: Liverpool v Real Madrid (UCL FINAL 28/5/22 8pm)

Stade De France.
Not to be confused with ā€˜sans domicile fixeā€™ (homeless).

I think it should be SdF.

I was wondering before the final if they would have gone with Bobby starting, and bring Diaz on later so that he could use his pace against tiring legs.

Me too.
I guess he had to go with the form 3 though reallyā€¦

ā€¦imagine the number ā€˜Why the fuck didnā€™t he start Diaz/did he start Bobbyā€™ posts thereā€™d be on here

I said the same thing to my father before the match yesterday. However, hindsight is 20/20.

Man o manā€¦the CL Final rolled into my Aussie rules team losing to its Everton equivalentā€¦weekend was only saved by Hindley winning the Giroā€¦andā€¦

The vision of the parade.

The boys deserve every second of enjoyment they want to take, although I am sure it will not last too long, they are too competitive and too professional.

What a rideā€¦just had a bit of a shit endā€¦weā€™d win that game 8 times out of 10, I reckonā€¦but thatā€™s professional sport, innit.

I have well and truly calmed down, but the point made on Sat night still standsā€¦the entitlement some on here feel to lay the boots into a group of people who have pushed themselves to the limits and beyond is a fucking disgrace. Big summer needed for you.

See youse for the silly seasonā€¦will let you know if I see any white vans headed in a generally northerly direction.

Well said. The toxicity of some supporters is unbelievable, it is quite depressing. As I said in a previous post on the in match comments, to be critical is ok. It means that we are able to analyse with a degree of respect. But some of the shite spouted about our players is disgraceful. Mo Salah has endured more than most recently. Won the Golden Boot, puts in 100% every matchā€¦but receives more than a fair share of abuse. Not criticism, abuse.

In the past I was fairly critical of Liverpool players, but I tried at least to be even handed. This group of players are millimetres away from being mentioned in the all time greats, a bit of respect is the least they deserve.

Been the same in every match thread all season. Though I avoided them for last few games. We concede a goal and our players get called all sorts. By the same people who seem to forget theyā€™ve been embarrassed in every other thread when we inevitably come back and win easily

I caught a report about the problems before the game on Deutche Welle. There is an English language transcript on their website:

Iā€™m interested to see what comes out of the French Sport ministry meeting but as French politics appears to be almost as dysfunctional as British politics Iā€™m not expecting anything short of a blame game. Clearly UEFA arenā€™t bothered and having read reports from Rangers fans of how their final was mismanaged Iā€™m not expecting anything positive.

Anyone get the feeling that the Super League isnā€™t such a bad idea after all?

Iā€™ve had difficulty to post something in this thread. Like every one here, I feel downbeat with the result, with the manner how it happened, with the detestable sideshow outside of the stadiumā€¦ for me, this should have been a big party to celebrate football, but it was a dire affair in the end. Especially for us of course.

Nevertheless, congrats to Real Madrid. We can say that they were ā€˜luckyā€™, that Courtois had the game of his life, that our lads werenā€™t on top of their game due to a stressful and overloaded season. But hey, a team managing to throw out PSG, Chelsea, Abu Dhabi and finally to beat us 1-0 in the final, is worthy of the trophy.

Ancelotti is a monster, isnā€™t heā€¦ four CL trophies now to his name. And it pains me to say it, but heā€™s one of very few in the game, possibly the only one, who has Kloppā€™s number, he beats him more often than not. A genuine coaching legend, and as heā€™s also someone who has class about him (compared to Mourinho for instance), Iā€™ll not begrudge him his successes.

As for us, hopefully this bitter experience will give our lads extra motivation to come back next season with even more strength and desire, just like after our defeat in Kiev. Fingers crossed!

Iā€™d be interested to know how you differentiate between criticism and abuse. Iā€™ve already been getting pelters on another thread for criticising , not abusing , Mo Salah for his recent form and for all the histrionics surrounding his contract negotiations. For some posters , it would appear , itā€™s considered sacrilegious to criticise our own players and we need to be publicly dressed down for having the audacity to do so. I can only think , off the top of my head , of one or two posters who you could really say ā€˜abuseā€™ our players regularly , and I think the general consensus is that they are either wums or attention-seekers.

Ancelotti was in charge of Everton during one of the worst ones in living memory and his non apology afterwards was nothing like class.

The guy lost a lot of respect from me that day.

I think itā€™s impossible to be Everton manager these days and stay 100% dignified. That derby was awful indeed, but I wouldnā€™t put it all on Ancelotti, as all their managers have had awful games against us in recent times, and some of them are decent blokes in the whole.

Letā€™s just say that Ancelottiā€™s move to Everton was an error, but that he was intelligent enough to rapidly rectify it.

I think most of us know the difference and I think those who abuse our players, though a small cohort donā€™t understand the notion of critique

Thatā€™s where they should all be, down a hole.

Iā€™m still trying to get my head around what happened. Itā€™s as if Iā€™ve had two very different experiences for the final.

I was up in Liverpool for the final - it was such a great day - the atmosphere in town electric, everyone was buzzing, flares, songs. We were in centre of town for about 3-4 hrs, then at 6ish heading down to the screening venue we were at (ITW).

Once in the venue, however, the mood began to change. We were chatting to fans whoā€™d received messages from fans in Paris about what was going on, there were rumours that Thiago was out, the match was being delayed. It just didnā€™t feel right, and thatā€™s the way the final played out - everything we tried didnā€™t work, their keeper played a blinder, we looked a bit lost.

Iā€™ve got the whole match recorded on the telly box - Iā€™m not sure when I will watch the full match back - but probably need to to draw a line under it.

Immensely proud of this team

Thanks for posting that article. Social media has been even more horrible than normal these past couple of days. People I had respect for really getting down in the gutter.

Iā€™d also seen a video of ā€œfansā€ bursting through a gate which some people used that this is normal LFC fan behaviour and therefore we were at fault all those years ago in Sheffield.

Nothing like some truth to perk my mood up. Iā€™ve been getting increasingly down post the game, not from the result but the stuff thatā€™s been circulating afterwards. I guess if thatā€™s all United and Everton fans have got weā€™re doing something right.

Game wise Iā€™m ok. We win that game 4 times out of 5 and no one would bat an eyelid. I suppose Iā€™m not that enamoured by Madrid beating us again in a final, but hey ho, they arenā€™t a bad bogey team to have I guess.

Anyone know why Lime st station closed early Saturday night leaving hundreds of people unable to travel home after the game.

It was part of planned closures. Linked below;

Saturday 28 May

Train services will be strengthened to 6 cars where possible for passengers travelling to watch the match and support LFC. There will be no timetable changes, however:

  • James Street and Lime Street low level stations will be closed from 16:00 to manage passenger numbers.
  • Green Lane and Bromborough Rake stations will be closed all day to manage passenger numbers.
  • Moorfields and Liverpool Central stations will remain open.

The last trains departing the city centre after the match are expected to be extremely busy. Please check your train times, leaving plenty of time for your journey and possible queues at stations.

For passengers attending the match screening at Aintree racecourse, the last trains after the match depart Aintree for Liverpool at 23:24 and 23:54.
