Post Match: Liverpool v Sheffield Utd (EPL 24/10/20 8pm)

Brewster started last night. Did anyone catch a glimpse of him?

I think andrea marriner deserves some sympathy. I mean it can’t be easy doing VAR what with his impediment and all:

I was disappointed with aspects of this match from us.
Tactically we were dominated. Their 532 completely nullied our 424. We had noone between their lines noone pulling defenders and they had a pretty free run though our axe.
4 attackers/forwards yet no center forward, just 4 lined up with the opposition defenders.
Oh but the stats say differently look at our possession for example 64% yeah but soo deep and then hoof it toward Salah. No plays through the axe just down the wings which they blocked pretty effectively most of the match.
Firmino was particularly frustrating never in a good position never between their lines either a 6 or in their defensive line.
Our defensive line was too deep in possession there was just acres of space no midfield just defense or attack.
I am finding it really difficult to chose a MOTM these days so here’s hoping for better days.
We won and I’m glad of that however it could have been such a different story if SU had some technical ability. Good management and tactics from the opposition.

That’s why I wanted us to practice shooting from outside the box so that it would take the decisions out of their hands we score a few like that early on and it would also give us a another skill to use against park the bus teams

I absolutely hated that game too , for a variety of reasons. (One was having to watch it on a tv from the eighties where I could just about make out who was wearing red.)

We were out of the traps like greyhounds and after the first five minutes I was thinking it was just a matter of how many we were going to win by.

Then came the penalty. First off I wasn’t even convinced it was a foul. Then I saw the VAR freeze frame and thought oh well at least it is outside the box. Then I thought back to Mané’s offside last week and had an ominous premonotion we were about to be shafted again. And so it came to pass.

The rest of the half was fucking embarrassing to be honest. Our famed mentality turned to sludge and we allowed Sheffield Utd to dominate us at Anfield.

Second half much better but it was still a hard watch. I was convinced Bobby’s equaliser was gonna be Varred off and was amazed when it wasn’t. More penalty shouts for them , more terror for me. Mo’s brilliantly taken goal wiped off , of course. Finally Jota (who was excellent) restored justice but still we had to endure a very nervy ending.

I don’t know how the fuck Klopp said he enjoyed that . It was something close to torture for me.

Still , hats off to the Reds for seeing it out and securing the points.

I literally don’t celebrate goals anymore because I’m waiting for VAR to come in and do something weird.

This has been a common experience for many many people. Goals and the experience of celebrating those, amongst the other aspects of games like misses, conceding and making a come back, unexpected goals, etc etc bring those ecstatic moments for which you watch football. That’s what sports is all about. You don’t want you watch it to just ensure everything went right and finally whether the team won. It’s the experience of the game that matters.

Not saying VAR isn’t needed, ofcourse correct decisions are welcome. But what’s happening is even for Bobby’s goal knowing that couldn’t have any problem, was waiting for 3-4 minutes after restart just to ensure. But the moment’s gone, it’s just a sigh of relief that it was given rather than actually enjoying the goal.

It killed all enjoyment of that game for me.

Yeah agree with both of you. It should have been a fun come back but instead I just watched kind of dispassionately until I saw at least the third replay of Firmino’s goal and was able to have a fair idea he was onside.

Jota’s goal, similar thing, just watched the screen. Didn’t even react.

Football was much more fun before VAR. Even if it was frustrating. Its still frustrating but now it’s not as fun.

For me it’s obvious VAR isn’t the problem, it’s the application of VAR that’s crooked.
I just hate those moments where a player is in on goal from being 3 meters offside and it’s not flagged until a player is writhing in agony because thay busted a gut. As for me I’m having a heart attack gasping for breathe trying to scream ‘that’s offside’. It’s just unnecessary and completely stupid!

It was not a performance to boast on our part, and the only excuse I have is the likely adjustment to 4-2-3-1 which threw the players a little. It left much more space in midfield for SU to exploit and less space up top for us to run into. As well, in transition and/or when looking to pass, the new shape must have thrown unfamiliarity from our +3 years of playing 4-3-3 week-in week-out, so even though we seemed less crisp than usual, its probably mostly the adjustment to another formation.

Thought Gini was very quiet and had the thought is he demotivated by the contract situation.

Gomez looked far better and one can only hope he rises to his earlier form whilst VVD is out.

Henderson is an absolute leader, he was brilliant all game.

Jota is, for me, however the deserved man of the match; has fitted straight in, scored 2, won us this game, and generally looks hungry at the plate.

This is hackneyed, but VAR is destroying the fluidity of the game and turning it into a pattern of stop-start disappointments. Without it we won that game 3-0. Its very odd that VAR is being applied in a minutely technical sense, whereupon many of the instances, pose no issue of unfair advantage. Take Salah’s brilliant disallowed goal, where he is marginally offside; that goal still gets scored if Mo is onside.

I’ve not seen anyone else post this, but Im concerned teams are coming to be overly physical against us. It was not as bad as blueshites but still lots of SU players were looking to leave a mark on ours, and it does not seem we are getting any protection.

This season looks like it is going to be scrappy and will throw up some surprises, Lancaster Gate will make sure of that #Premenders - its Match of the Day with the Eastenders theme tune.

I used to laugh at the talk of some conspiracy by the officials against us but after the last two weekends I’m really starting to wonder.
A good hard fought three points against a team that are going to struggle to stay up. Our back line are finding it difficult to deal with any high balls that are pumped into our half and the likes of Burnley and Palace will be trying to capitalise on that. Let’s just hope we can sign someone in January to fill the huge gap VVD injury has left. I also thought that at times on the playing out from the back we dawdled on the ball to long and were nearly caught out a couple of times. Even Allison got caught middle of the second half waiting too long on the ball.
Good to see Trent looking more like himself and Robbo was like the Duracell bunny up and down the pitch.
The VAR decision was crazy and I was surprised that Robbo’s unintentional handball wasn’t given as a penalty by Marriner.
Gave Joto my MOM for a good display and an important goal for us.

Not a penalty. Look, Robertson’s feet are outside the box!

Doesn’t matter, our eyes don’t work in the same way as VAR as it sees things we can’t.

Re Brewster:

He was ok but think it was very clear that he is way off our level (currently) and even his replacement was more lively. Jury obviously will be out for some time but I think we’ve got a very nice fee for him in the circs and we won’t be exercising any buyback option.

A post from me, due to feeling strongly about the on-going attempts to shaft us.

The job got done last night, despite the ref and VAR.

No system works if officials have an agenda, and these officials are fitting their narrative to the justification of that agenda, hence the ridiculous explanations.

At best there is a more widespread bias amongst officials against LFC this season, given the general hysteria about LFC benefitting from VAR last season, and/or maybe due to a desire to slap LFC down because our owners suggested change to the FA’s gravy train.

There definitely remains the bias that certain officials have had against LFC for years, whether that be regional prejudice, favouritism towards Manchester and London clubs, or quite probably corruption of another sort.

I fully expect Martin Atkinson to end up with a million dollar a game gig in the Middle East at some point. Draw your own conclusions.

If they’re serious about sorting this, as a starting point the ref at the ground should be made the sole decision maker, and VAR should merely refer him to the monitor when key decisions need to be made. That eliminates the buck passing.

There’s no point us abandoning our fair play approach, as we have to be as clean as we are or the authorities would be down on us like a ton of bricks.

There’s also no point expecting we’ll ever get a totally fair rub of the green. Even if this starts to happen, the Manchester and London biased media will be all over it and twist it like last season.

But the club also needs to stand up to this more, and get what friends it has in the media to back a subtle campaign of pointing these things out.

It concerns me that Klopp seems a bit dispirited by it. He needs to realise that bias and prejudice is widespread in this country towards the city (and our club), which is why the government started its tier system by singling out Liverpool.

The reason he is so loved is because he enables us to stick two fingers up at the rest of the country and the establishment, but for his sake, the club needs to find a way to address it.

For all the good things they’ve done, one issue with our owners is maybe that they still lack a bit of understanding about the regional and political issues in England, in general and within the game.

They need to wise up a bit and work out how to address it, as it’s going to cost us trophies, just as it’s cost us by way of the nobbling of club assets like VVD.

How do you explain the fact that my mate who is a West Ham fan thinks the refs and the FA have tried to screw them with VAR the last two years. How come Chelsea and Man City forums are full of conspiracy allegations about VAR. Did you see the Chelsea forward get wrestled to the ground yesterday and no pen? Is that because of a conspiracy by the refs to bring Chelsea down?

On Celtic fans forums, which I look at, there are always conspiracy allegations against refs, UEFA and the SFA. They have just conceded a stonewall penalty but sure enough, fans on their forum are blaming a Masonic conspiracy for the ref giving it.

Are they all wrong and the only true conspiracy is against us?

As usual there are too many people who would have to be in the know for any such conspiracy to work. Please let’s not start that all over again.

In truth every team’s fans have reasons to think that on occasions they have been shafted by VAR.

I’m still shitting my pants because I know the VAR can over rule both of our goals even today because mane had his spritis armpit offside as VAR has used Kirlian photography to prove it and jota had a mutated eyebrow hair which was 10m in length which the VAR just identified using the world’s most powerful electronic microscope.

All everyone is asking is that the person who reviews the VAR be accountable.
Making a mistake in real time is different compared to making a mistake after watching a replay 100 times.
I can give the benefit of the doubt if its a 50-50 and goes against us.
But tell me,
The stone cold penalty on mo against villa
The red card against Pickford and denying us the winner against everton
The penalty to Sheffield yesterday,
If these are 50-50 in anyone’s eyes, they are fucking biased.
Camera angles and replay clearly show all those were wrong decisions.
Its robbery and I can’t stand the fact that a nonce whp probably earns 100k£ per year for watching a replays can’t make proper decisions.

I wouldn’t use the term conspiracy in this instance. You are attempting to derail the argument by using emotive language and by comparing to other clubs. We were down this road before, and in answer to your please, I for one won’t start it again.
However…
My argument is that a bias certainly exists, and that it is evidenced in the last two games. The media drove the agenda, prompting officials to go the opposite direction rather than being tarred with the LiVARpool brush. Lets be clear, the assault on VVD should have been reviewed, the Hendo goal should have stood, and yesterdays penalty decision was utter nonsense.

And Chelsea should have had a penalty yesterday, but remember who they were playing…
