Just saying that I can understand the way he’s reacted to getting called for a foul. The referee made a bad call. And then used that petulance as an excuse to book him. The point remains that it never was a foul. You can’t equate that to Simeone’s incident.
There’s no excusing his actions for the second card though knowing he was on a yellow.
Yes I have always admired Chiesa in his pomp playing for Italy, he was electric and last night I recognised that player. Slot will now have to stop treating him like a two bob academy player and more like an integral part of the team.
Maybe Slot had him pencilled in to do 90 tonight to test his fitness in a less physically challenging game with less on the line. If he’d have been on the bench for Everton who knows if/when he might have come on.
Unlike the last couple times he’s started and played 90 he actually looked both fit and showed the quality we need from him. Hopefully sets him up for a role against Palace at the weekend now we’re short of Ekitike.
Still reckon he’s only really here to cover Mo during AFCON but at least yes given Slot something to think about with this outing.
Regarding Rio, I though he had occasions in the first half when he could have taken his man 1v1 before the help came, and he chose not to. The couple of times he went beyond and put in a cross it was a dangerous situation.
What about Nyoni. For me he looked lost and didn’t get into the game until Jones went off and he dropped back into the double pivot role. Much more involved and useful, he could actually tackle.
The whole of the first half, except for in the very beginning we were wayy too slow moving the ball. Southampton moved it quicker the times they got it. And we dwelled in the ball too long, Exceot Isak and Chiesa and Young Leoni
Did ok on the whole I thought, had plenty of touches but would’ve liked to seen him be a bit more adventurous on the ball/purposeful with his passing as he’s certainly capable.
Well yes that’s why Rio is in the bench warming squad and Gakpo is a regular first team starter.
What I meant is that the style and what Rio was trying to do is similar to Gakpo (hence Gakpo probably is involved with the lads training).
Rio will be judged in 3 to 5 years time.
I’m sure I don’t have to point this out however this is the first time the bench warmers have played a competitive match this season, there was a lot of misunderstanding out there. They need a few matches to get up to steam.
Southampton put in a lot of effort for a championship side playing away and did a lot to try and unsettle us. The first 20 minutes was nerve racking. Endo losing the ball so much. Jones not finding the angles … etc.
Yes because a better player was in front of the double pivot and breaking a leg to be available.
I was surprised Jones was replaced as he was the midfielder who had found a way to be useful. Ended up being quite a good piece of coaching and rested Jones for when he’s next needed for the first team.
