He was a key player in that season - there is a strong correlation between results and his performance in individual ratings. I saw one series that suggested his two worst overall games were the draws in May that season versus Arsenal and Palace.

Back then, when his performance levels dropped, I perhaps naively assumed he was simply overworked—a result of little to no squad rotation. I’ve since come to think it was also down to the lack of competition for places; there was simply no need to maintain or improve his standard of play. I got the impression that the “Dutch bubble” had created a sort of “comfort zone,” leading to a complete drop-off in performance—one that, unfortunately, he has seemingly never quite managed to recover from.

He was brilliant for those first months and I did say I hope he doesn’t burn out. I thought he did burn out however he never got any of his brilliance back. He was never a good passer so he should keep it simple i.e he’s limited he has never had good vision so needs a limited role. He could be excellent in that limited role however from what we have seen he hasn’t got it and needed that system we had for those first months of the championship season.
Yet in that same championship season, he was 1st in fwd passing for all PL MFs. 3rd in total passes.
