Who amongst us is on £200,000 a week? I get what you are saying, but these guys (footballers in general) are required to have these high standards. They are paid ridiculous amounts of money, as young men to do what we can only dream of.
I’m just going on the tone of his posts, but I certainly didn’t mean it as an insult. Nothing wrong with rough and ready, I’d describe some of my best friends that way.
The end of season holiday should be seen in the context of the rest of the summer, where I recall seeing the original plan was to get them all in a couple of weeks early for pre-season.
We all know why the pre season ended up being massively disrupted, but I think ‘go and have a break now the league is done, because you’re all coming back earlier than normal’ isn’t a bad plan. Circumstances mean we’ll never know if it would have worked.
I think this game especially underlined his absence.
For me it was a BIG miscalculation not to replace him and is the biggest problem in the team atm.
We can’t stretch teams and we cannot dominate in the 1v1 in wide areas. At least until Frimpong returns…That’s what allowed Sunderland to just sit in a disciplined block…
Plus his rotation with Gakpo kept both players fresh while offering variety…
Semenyo is good but a little similar to Gakpo, although more variety…But I have no doubt he’ll spark up the attack…
I would say he’s more similar to Diaz. He’s maybe more direct whereas part of the fun with Diaz was figuring what mazy route he’d take towards goal, but the main thing you can point to with both of them is even if they are not scoring or directly creating they are making life absolute hell for 90 mins for the defenders they’re playing against.
I keep coming back to the comment from Sadio in his recent interview that Klopp sold the project to him as building a team that will be horrible to play against and you can understand why that was a great selling point to someone like Sadio. We have lost that. Teams now face isolated attacks, ones where they feel if they buckle down to do the work right now they can take a bit of a break when they eventually snuff it out whereas before there was no break until the final whistle. No single player gets us back to that from where we are now, but Semenyo at least has that dog in him where he plays with a “alright you fuckers, lets fucking do this.” mentality
I know he’s a clown but Gary Neville has a massive hard on for Mane, he always shoehorns him in to any discussions about players he’d have hated to face. The constant movement inside, the amount of time he gives you as an opposition player with the ball. This clip of him always gets posted around twitter and is a perfect encapsulation of what a bastard he must have been to play against.
He was a fucking menace even when he had an off game.
I see a lack of organization during the match. The press is not effective because the players don’t know who/what their assignments are. So many times a single simple pass breaks our press because our forwards and midfielders don’t have their numbers correct. Press is 1v1 man marking until someone (used to be Bobby, or Jordan) springs the trap and they close in to create an overload.
This usually happens on a full back as their passing options become less as the ball gets closer to the sideline. Mo or Sadio or Diaz were the key players here.
That organization came from the leadership on the field who were tactically astute and had the respect of the rest of the team.
I don’t see it this year. I don’t see who is organizing them on the pitch and it shows in the play we are seeing. Real Madrid match aside, the lads played with their hair on fire that day. They were tight on their markings and ran.
I don’t know if it’s a Slot thing, or if VanDijk has pissed them off with his petulant arm-flailing every time something goes wrong, but until someone (looking at you, Dom/Macca) steps up we are going to continue to see games like this
I know it was a team effort and not all down to Jurgen, and perhaps a horrible over simplification, but one of the things I loved about Jurgen’s approach was it seemed so simple. Bring in big physical/ pacey guys, with enough technical ability and engines to run all day, and the willingness to do so. Obviously didn’t apply to all signings but enough of the main ones for me to believe it an authentic strategy.
I see the press start, but not executed properly. You can see the mismatch happening and so can the opponents. Just takes one pass and not only does the press break down, but it leaves the midfield out of position
Sometimes I wonder if that’s how teams are setting up against us. To catch us on the shitty press and make a couple quick vertical moves to catch us on the counter…
& this is all from the first half by the way, our press allows their keeper to play a pass to their CB, who receives the ball with no red shirt within 60 yards of him, then allowed to carry the ball to the halfway line whilst we have 10 men behind in our own half. It’s a shambles.
