Post match: Liverpool v Watford (EPL 2/4/22 12.30pm)

After yesrerday’s game, looks like Gomez can be a very useful squad player : back-up CB and RB. Our right side ‘Tsimikas’.
If I can see that, heck I’m sure Jurgen can. Also being backup for 2 positions will get more game time.
A win-win for both club and player.

I think it’s often overlooked that we don’t really do “tactical” changes in that sense, we far more often have substitutions that are timed for fitness reasons, which is why the timings are fairly predictable.

Your go to response, using emoticons.
You haven’t a clue about how football is actually played, you use the odd cliched statement to make like you know about football and if its challenged you revert to silliness…

Its the standard for you, well done.

Playing every game as a first choice CB at a club like Newcastle or West Ham would probably get Joe in contention for the World Cup. Playing sporadically as back up to Trent/Matip will definitely not.

I hope Joe stays and backs himself to take back Matip’s place in the team, But what he’s getting now probably won’t be seen as a win for him.

Not sure how they score 3-4 when they only had 2-3 chances, the three you list is the 3 they had, they had another that went into row z, so I think that’s the 4.

I think this is where projected goals does actually come into it. Jota’s chance is a sitter to me. I’ve just seen a stat on the telegraph, their shooting accuracy was 40% ours was 15% which I think probably tells you the story.

Who hasn’t a clue?

Your career isn’t about just making your national team. If you are a top player (which Joe is) it’s about winning titles, big ones. He is young and will have more chances of playing for England especially when he eventually takes over for the 30-somethings we gave as CBs now

Other than the header, both of those shot chances were offside, and would have been pulled back via VAR if the in field linesman didn’t give it. The header went straight to Allison and Hernandez isn’t really known for headed goals. Yes they made us uncomfortable but that was more down to the players being away for two weeks, travelling long distances, and the 12:30 kickoff.

I’d have to agree. They just played well, they were positive in the main. As bad as their position is in the league they have goalscoring talent in Sarr, Dennis, King. Hernandez is a useful little player. Sissoko has world-class talent if not the application. They got back in numbers to counter our pressure but don’t think they were parking the bus.

Let’s hope he sees it that way. It would be very sad if he left.

I would say that Watford were well organised defensively rather than having ‘parked the bus’ (PTB). If a tem PTBs then it’s usually banks of 4/5 and one lone attacker trying to feed of what he can get. IMO Watford were willing to commit to attacks even before we scored. Some teams come to Anfield and you can imagine swapping our defenders for midfielders as the defenders have nothing to do all game except recieve defensive punts and re ycle the ball to start another attack. I don’t feel that Watford played like ggat yesterday.

Watford for me did sit back with banjs of 4 & 5 players with one attacker, it was even mentioned in commentary. However they did break quickly when the opportunity arose, which was rare.
Another telling stat is 73% pissession to us, again suggesting that Watford just sat back in there defensive shape and didn’t press us.

The tactic effectively was boot it long or down the flanks, if I’m honest it’s probably something we could have shut out easily, if we press the keeper effectively it will shut out one route so it’s something to be aware of. I would say both their chances were poor passes by us.

Fair enough, I’ve not watched the game back. Just given my perception of how I thought the game panned out. I suppes that is the beauty of football. Different fans see games/performances in tgeir own way. You’ve only got to read an in game or post game thread where Poster1 will say that Player X was great but Poster2 will be of the opinion that Player X was garbage.

Yeah we lost the ball (bad passes) in midfield to cause both breaks

Same old rubbish I’ve been reading for weeks - Liverpool were poor, X team COULD have scored 5 goals if they’d taken their chances and the offside rule didn’t exist, Liverpool were lucky etc.

It was a relatively comfortable win by a team in 2nd gear. Same as it has been for a while now.

Sarr was good. Watford gave a good account of themselves. It wasn’t good enough.

May this slump continue just the same forever…

I missed the second half, but the first half looked alright. I would say that a lot of similar comments were made in 2019-20, so hopefully it’ll lead to a similar end…

And 18-19. We snuck a lot of close wins in that season and didn’t play well in a lot of games. Then, when we won the league in 19-20, there were loads of comments about how we’d actually played much better in 18-19. I think people just forget that it’s impossible to look great every single week. And not only is it impossible, it’s also unnecessary. We’re winning these games easily.

I remember the good old days when on this very board, Thiago was said to be our worst player, the player who was slowing our play down and because of him we had lost our thrust and penetration… " Oh I remember, the good ol days":smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
