Some times its tough luck for a defender and part of the package of playing there. Yes it sucks when you boot a player whose foot snuck in from a point outside your peripheral vision and give away a penalty, but it also sucks when you raise your hand to gain height on a header and the ball deflects off your hand (which is in an unnatural position) and you give away a penalty. It sucks when a fizzer of a ball bounces off 3 bodies and deflects off your shins into your own goal. There are a million variations for a defender to get screwed by chance. Thatâs the nature of it. Many of them are not in your control.
I am yet to see clear evidence that any of the situations you speak of are a deliberate ploy by an attacker (what sort of player chooses to get booted in the ankle or foot?) and they are just trying to win the ball like the defender. The fact they get a penalty is down to sheer luck in terms of the timing of foot contact.
Mo is an offside position as per the laws of the game, then the laws of the game stipulate that the player is not penalised for being offside for various reasons i.e from a goal kick, a throw in, corner kick or if the ball was last deliberately played by an opponent.
As Limiescouse says there was an update to the interpretation in July 2022 discussing the difference between deliberately played and a deflection, but it is rather convoluted
I am yet to see clear evidence that in any of the situations I referred to, that I stated or even suggested that they are deliberate ploys by the attacker.
I get that and when Mo scored I told my mate he is onside because the Defender played the ball.
Lets put the boot on the other foot. If a Wolves player was standing in an offside position and one of our CBâs attempted to clear the ball because they were not sure if the player was offside and they scored from the poor header would you be happy?
Alternatively, if one of our defenders pulled out of a header because they thought the attacker was offside. Infact, they were onside and scored. I am guessing you would be alright with that, as would be his manager, team mates, pundits, etc??
My point is that in most cases they are only deliberately playing the ball because they donât know the player is offside.
I am lost, I donât think the goal should have stood as it was more of a deflection as he was back pedalling trying to clear it, which is what the interpretation discusses
Sorry, I am not trying to be awkward/funny, just unsure of what you are saying.
So, you do not feel the goal should have stood? As it was a deflection and not a deliberate act?
