I’m not usually a “the Ref is awful”, but well, he was.

Me if any other right back starts for us next season.
Yeah same bar the obvious names I generally give them the benefit of the doubt but he was terrible. Can’t say he didn’t give Brighton enough free kicks around the box.
Now if we could clone him, and make that clone our new LB. Kerkez drives me nuts, lots of gas but no brains.
Second have seemed a little long so I have forgotten what happened in the first half.
Bloody good win!
Interesting that Brighton looked better coming down the side Gravenberch was on.
Araujo fantastic as were Wirtz and Macca. Noone had a poor or bad game.
We are definitely improving imo.
Wish I could vote for four POTM.
Should check if he’s in the mix for the Arsenal game…
Don’t generally have back to back then again we have Chelsea midweek.
It was the double standard free kicks where he reffed both sides differently.
Good :
- Front three looking more dangerous than ever. Barcola and Gakpo were very industrious and a very good outlets of the ball. Isak is getting into the groove of scoring goals with some coming in essential safety net goals. Gakpo do need to improve his decision making and shooting accuracy.
- Our defence is immense. VVD is slowly going back to his best. Jacquet has helped immensely in making our defence secure, could be the next VVD in the squad. Araujo is a good mix of a no nonsense RB and a good supporting FB. He was inevitably the one throwing his body everywhere where at one point, he used his head on the ground to just nudge the ball slightly away from the attacker. Kerkez had a decent game but needs to put in first time cut-backs more often.
- Macca is back to his best at CM. Wonderful to see him go about his business.
- Wirtz was impressive today. Offensively potent but it is worrying to see if his knock is something more serious.
Bad :
- Gravenberch. I didn’t recall him winning more than 2 challenges in the midfield at all. All I saw was him escorting the opposition player into the final third, be it as a CM or CAM. He seems to be afraid of getting stuck in and using his body more effectively like how Gakpo do it. It was only when Trey slotted into CM where we had any semblance of defensive control in the middle of the park.
- Alisson. His distribution is horrible today, needs to buckle up.
Araujo got my vote but I’ve got to mention Virgil who was back to his imperious best today. Must have been very difficult for them in the awful conditions and I thought it was the best defensive display we’ve seen this season. Six points over the last two weekends against two of the form teams in the league can’t be bad.
The inconsistent wind caught us out at the back 3 or 4 times but each time the collective commitment to get back and address it was a joy to see. Modern defenders often play like the actual defending is beneath them. All of them played today like they were competing to see who can end the game with the muddiest shorts.
I liked Grav a lot in transition. I think the defensive issues were more down to team shape.
Araujo was terrific indeed, but I thought that Gakpo wasted a lot of good opportunities and didn’t help Kerkez in the first half. He worked hard and had a lot of positives but he had his frustrating moments as well.
Apart from them two, Wirtz was great; some of his passing was sensational, shame that he got injured.
But really, there is little to nit-pick. Yes, the midfield could offer better protection and more control, yes, we can be more clinical and smarter, but overall this was an excellent result against a very good team. The first league win at Anfield in six months.
We are starting to look again like a team that has to be reckoned with.
As @RoadReptile said, 3 votes wasn’t really enough. I thought Nyoni was excellent when he came on for Wirtz.
I was actually pleased to get back to a clean sheet. Brighton are a decent side, and it makes life so much easier when you only have to worry about scoring once.
This is the second time Barrott has officiated at Anfield and both times he’s made a point of favouring the opponent.
He also won all his duals
There was a lot to like out there today. I thought the attack did well, in terms of looking like a unit. Still work to do, and more improvement to find, but there was some linking up that we’ve not seen too much of this season, and it gives me hope for more to come.
I thought all four of them, including Wirtz, had good games.
The defence was very resolute today, which was lovely to see. Jacquet is a Rolls Royce of a player and he had a good game. Again. Van Dijk played well after an iffy showing last time. Araujo showed us why the crowd have taken to him so quickly. While there’s no rush to pay the money before we have to, it will be a shock if we don’t make his deal a permanent one.
I really liked the intensity we showed. We are still a work in progress, but if we keep this up, and build on it, there’s no reason why we can’t get ourselves into a title race. Long way to go, mind.
Phil Jones springs to mind, though he looked hilarious doing it
