Our “wingers” have been where 95% of our attacks have gone to die, and I mean that in the nicest way possible. Stop isolating Ekitike, stop isolating your fullbacks and bring them into the game.
I suppose ‘solid’ is open to interpretation. I see where you are coming from. At his best he gets goals and causes some problems, but the flip side is that the cut inside is telegraphed as the whole world knows that’s what he wants to do. He also has a fairly languid-possible-lackadaisical style. I want Liverpool players to stand up and be counted, even if on occasion that means riding the border between fair and foul play in a roll up your sleeves sort of way, as needed. But Gakpo is a bit too butter-wouldn’t-melt-in-his-mouth in his style.
If Slot wants to play with wingers we need to recruit them! I could go with Wirtz on one side as a playmaker/winger, if 433 is the system, but then on the other side it needs the nearest we can get to peak Salah or Mane, and right now we are miles off that.
Since we just recruited two strikers and a playmaker, it looks to me like he has in mind a bit of a change of system, but he hasn’t implemented it yet.
another defeat that hurts, but I have confidence in the lads to pick themselves up and go on a good run of games undefeated. I also feel that Mo has lost his mojo, because he couldn’t get past his man at all, and the couple of half chances, he had, he wasn’t able to convert them. The new lads still need a little more time to fully integrate, but unfortunately in this day and age, that time isn’t afforded to them. There are extremely few players that can walk into a team and hit the ground running. On top of all that, the (so called) refs who officiate our games are an absolute disgrace to the game. Maybe a discussion should start about getting refs from other leagues to officiate PL games , and send PGMOL to the gulf to ref games there. Rant over

In a funny way, on the bish-bosh requirement for a midfielder, I was glad to see Szoboszlai leave a little something on Foden last week. We were well beaten by then, but Szoboszlai was clearly annoyed and as he jogged past Foden he bumped into him and sent him tumbling to the ground.
It wasn’t exactly a Gerrard on Fellaini sort of moment, much less a Souness or Tommy Smith sort of a move, but in the modern context it pleased me to see that he had a little bit of that in him.
For the avoidance of doubt, I’m certainly not advocating for violent grocks in our side who can’t play. They have to be really good at the old footy, first and foremost.
But the slight lament is the possible lack of steel, at the right moment, and a slight concern that we might be too ‘nice’ as a team in general.
Gakpo and Grav notwithstanding, Macca has a little edge to him, and I saw it come out from Szoboszlai too. Good!
Howard Webb has said officials did not act unreasonably in denying Liverpool an equaliser against Manchester City last weekend, but stopped short of calling the controversial decision correct.
I know there’s people that have an allergy for xg, but seeing the stats of how low all three of City’s expected goals were, together with a comparison of how much bigger ours were, reflected how I felt during the game - that their goals were not normal (that said, what a strike by Doku), and that we had enough good chances, however badly we played, and even while we were outplayed.
Adding the travesty of our legit goal that was cancelled, two minutes after which we conceded, ending up being 2-0 down at HT instead of 1-1…
Really, the game could and should have been so much different, even if we didn’t deserve much from it with our performance.
Huge issues with the PGMOL and several of them, especially Oliver, really seem to have it in for Liverpool. The stats are a huge anomaly. In any other sphere it would warrant an official investigation, resulting in decisive action.
Leaving all that aside (as if we can…)
Man City played very well against us and looked like a team poised to challenge for the title. It’s all crooked after all their cheating, but Guardiola has rebuilt the side and they now look poised to go again, to me. They won’t dominate as before, but they are in with a shout of this year’s Premier League title.
One thing to note is that they dropped off a bit while they transitioned and added a number of new players.
